http://cbs4indy.com/2017/08/29/what-the-colts-53-man-roster-might-look-like-as-team-deals-with-several-key-injuries/

"A couple of notes: We opted to keep Le’Raven Clark over rookie Zach Banner even though Banner is one of Ballard’s draft picks and Clark lost his starting right tackle spot to Jeremy Vujnovich . . . We like Barkevious Mingo and Margus Hunt  because of their special-teams skills . . . We went with JoJo Natson over Quan Bray because he offers more as a receiver. . . . We’re not sold on Edwin Jackson sticking around . . . This alignment will extend the Colts’ streak of having at least one undrafted rookie make the opening-day roster to 19 seasons, the NFL’s longest active streak. "

PROJECTED 53-PLAYER ROSTER

(*denotes rookie)

  • Quarterbacks (3): Andrew Luck, Scott Tolzien, Stephen Morris.
  • Running backs (3): Frank Gore, Robert Turbin, Marlon Mack*.
  • Wide receivers (6): T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Kamar Aiken, Chester Rogers, JoJo Natson*.
  • Tight ends (4): Jack Doyle, Erik Swoope, Brandon Williams, Darrell Daniels*.
  • Offensive line (9): Anthony Castonzo, Ryan Kelly, Jack Mewhort, Joe Haeg, Jeremy Vujnovich, Le’Raven Clark, Denzelle Good, Brian Schwenke, Deyshawn Bond*.
  • Defensive line (6): Johnathan Hankins, Henry Anderson, Al Woods, Hassan Ridgeway, Margus Hunt, Grover Stewart*.
  • Linebackers (9): Jabaal Sheard, John Simon, Jon Bostic, Antonio Morrison, Anthony Walker*, Barkevious Mingo, Tarell Basham*, Akeem Ayers, Edwin Jackson.
  • Cornerbacks (6): Vontae Davis, Rashaan Melvin, Quincy Wilson*, Nate Hairston*, Chris Milton, Corey White.
  • Safeties (4): Matthias Farley, Darius Butler, Malik Hooker*, Ronald Martin.
  • Punter (1): Rigoberto Sanchez*.
  • Placekicker (1): Adam Vinatieri.
  • Longsnapper (1): Luke Rhodes.

He cuts Banner, McGill, Parry, Spence,Bray... keeps White over Culliver at CB and has 6 WR.  Puts TJ Green on IR.  IMO, I would keep Banner over Good for RT, and McGill over Stewart for pass rush ability or keep Stewart and let one WR go

Culliver imo makes it over White, Why is Green going to IR when did he get injured? No way McGill gets the ax he is very productive. You have too many ILBs making the final 53 IMO. Good id an odd man out i think he gets his walking papers.

If Mcgill gets cut instead of Stewart, they haven't been watching the same games as me.

Injuries will definitely make this tough. This projection isn't crazy guys I'd prepare to see some shocking cuts;

I wouldn't keep 6 receivers. Chester Rogers isn't THAT special and if he's not ready by week 1 I'd put him on IR. If he is ready by week 1 then Jojo Natson goes to the practice squad until needed.

We may be forced to keep 4 tight ends if Erik Swoope isn't healthy for week 1 so that makes sense.

We'd have to find a way to keep Banner. He's a 4th round pick who played well in preseason. This may mean we start Schewenke at center and have Haeg and Mewhort as the backup centers if Schewenke gets hurt. That would allow Banner to make the team and Deyshawn Bond to go the practice squad.

Defensive line was always going to be the interesting position. Someone good has to go. Again, I don't see a 4th round pick getting cut so I see Grover Stewart making the team, unless they think no one would take him from the practice squad (highly doubtful). The defensive line group he has may be right until players get healthy.

4 inside linebackers seems low especially if Edwin Jackson isn't ready for week 1. I really don't want Anthony Walker Jr. on the field. I'd rather lose Mingo and keep Spence but that probably won't happen.

Pagano mentioned Culliver as a potential replacement for Vontae so I say he makes it over Corey White.

Huh, wonder what he's basing White over Culliver on. I think Culliver easily makes it over him unless he gets injured.

Kinda doubt we keep 4 TE's. That could leave a spot open for somebody else.

Bond over Banner I guess makes some sense because of injuries, even then though I don't know. I'd like to keep Banner. Kinda wonder if Schwenke even makes it at this point though, he's solid but he's just now coming back from injury and he's a risk going forward.

Too bad we're thin at safety too, Martin isn't really somebody I care to make the final roster.

I really hope we can keep McGill. I like all our other D-linemen enough but I just think McGill's one of those guys who just performs when given the chance.

TJ Green to IR?  I didn't know he was severely hurt.

Like others have said, I would not keep 4 TEs.

No way I would cut Banner, while keeping 6 WRs.  OL needs all the bodies and youth development possible!

I am a fan of Edwin Jackson.  He seems high energy and productive when given opportunities.   Would hate to see him not make it.

So do I. If it is really a competition, he makes the roster...

Then again, I'm forgetting to factor in potential. Potential can tip the scales in unexpected ways.

With the current slate of injuries, I have no idea how this 53 man roster will turn out. There will be a lot of surprises and disappointments. That's for sure.

This statement is the only one in this thread that is guaranteed 100 percent true

This is a very poor 53-man projection.    Not sure it shows a lot of thought.

First problem,  other than the 3 specialists,   he has the roster split 25-25 and that just rarely happens.    I know the Luck situation complicates things.     It forces us to carry 3 QB's.

But I don't see us carrying 6 WR's and 4 TE's.     Makes no sense to me.

I think Natson and Daniels get cut and make it to the Practice Squad.

That allows for another O-lieman who will be Banner.     I think there is ZERO chance Banner is cut because he'll NEVER make it to the PS.    Some team will claim him.     So, we won't risk it.

And the other spot goes to the defense,  likely another DL, or maybe another LB,  or maybe another Safety.

That will balance out the roster much better.

I highly doubt all the players on the final 53 are currently on our roster. Chiefs were active in waiver wire/acquiring players from other teams practice squads during Ballards tenure there (KC found 4 starters that way), Ballard has talked how one of the best times to acquire players is in September and October, only one cutdown day to 53 and we seriously lack depth in many positions, even without all these injuries.

I'm pretty sure some team will sign him up quickly if the Colts did that.

Nah I don't think he's been THAT impressive. I thought Tevaun Smith had a better preseason from a receiving standpoint last year and nobody took him.

What about Geathers? Will we have to clear a spot for him once he's able to play?

We should probably cross that bridge when we get to it. I don't want to be a dark cloud but does the name Delano Howell mean anything to you?

As far as this projection I think he's off. WR Chester or JoJo not both. Bond or Schwenke most likely Bond to the PS. That gives us 2 slots for Banner and TJ.

Unless Luck Swoope or Davis  are ready week 1 we are going to have to carry extra guys at those spots That probably means McGill is gone

I can totally see 6 Wrs. Situation may warrant only keeping 5 though.

Can't see 4 TE if you're pretty confident Swoope is back by week 1. X out that extra tight end and put him on the PS. Keep TY Mcgill.

No way you cut E. Jackson. A. Walker Jr is not ready. Not from what I saw.

I dont even think there were enough ILB in that projection to begin with.

Banner should stay. Not going on PS.

Think Milton can go on PS again

Think Margus Hunt should stay.

Dont think you cut Grover.

Culliver should stay.

Green should stay
