  1. Right. But we also are expected to draft a corner, So the fact that DeJean can play either position, makes me think Ballard could have his eye on him.
  2. As a Ballard type player, he seems to fit the bill. Big 10. Excels at zone coverage. Elite athlete. Special Teams standout, Good tackler. etc. Colts may be able to trade back, and still land DeJean Considered one of the Safest picks. Seven 2024 NFL Draft Prospects Who Are Safest Bets to Succeed at Next Level https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10113875-7-2024-nfl-draft-prospects-who-are-safest-bets-to-succeed-at-next-level DB Cooper DeJean, Iowa A fractured fibula during a November practice tempered any excitement regarding Cooper DeJean's draft status. So he's not been in the same conversations as the class' top defensive backs, specifically Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell and Alabama's Terrion Arnold. DeJean's profile projects just as well or better than the aforementioned cornerbacks. Three specific attributes set DeJean's floor higher than anyone else among the back end. First, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year presents the positional flexibility and traits to start at cornerback or safety at the professional level, with B/R's Cory Giddings highlighting his coverage skills: "DeJean excels in zone coverage, but he's versatile enough to play man as well. He shows a smooth backpedal and the ability to keep his leverage and quick footwork with few wasted steps. Although he transitions well, there are times where DeJean hops into his breaks; allowing a step of separation. "When in zone, DeJean does a great job of reading and reacting to the quarterback's eyes. Pairing that skill set with his route recognition, he often puts himself in good position with leverage and positioning. "While working downfield, DeJean has the strength necessary to hand-fight with tight ends and bigger receivers, as well as the speed necessary to carry twitchier receivers downfield. He also does a very good job of locating the ball and playing through the catch point." Second, the high school track standout is an elite athlete who captured Iowa state titles in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Many expected him to blow the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium. Unfortunately, he wasn't ready to test in Indianapolis after being cleared a few weeks earlier. "His acceleration is incredibly fluid and super powerful," NFL combine trainer Jordan Luallen told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman last summer. "He's the best athlete I've seen in person, pound for pound." Finally, DeJean adds significant value as an elite collegiate returner. Big Ten coaches also awarded him Return Specialist of the Year this past season. DeJean averaged 13.1 yards per punt return over the last two seasons. A top-notch contributor anywhere along the defensive backfield and on special teams will provide excellent value in the NFL. Potential Landing Spots: Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles
  3. There are quite a few articles on the internet that say he may transition to safety in the NFL. Interesting reads
  4. If they don't sign anyone, I got a feeling Ballard may target Cooper DeJean in the draft
  5. Kareem Jackson From Wikipedia ...2023 On May 15, 2023, Jackson re-signed with the Broncos on another one-year contract. Jackson received a $14,819 fine for an illegal hit on Las Vegas Raiders' wide receiver Jakobi Meyers in their Week 1 game. In a Week 2 loss to the Washington Commanders, he was ejected after an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit against tight end Logan Thomas, resulting in the latter getting a concussion. His hit on Thomas resulted in a $19,669 fine. Jackson received a third fine ($11,473) in as many games for unnecessary roughness in a Week 3 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The league issued him a fine for $43,709, Jackson's fourth for the season, for unnecessary roughness stemming from a late hit on the Thursday Night Football loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Following his second ejection that season in a Week 7 win for a hit on Green Bay Packers' tight end Luke Musgrave ("defenseless receiver"), the NFL suspended Jackson for four games. They reduced the suspension to two games after Jackson appealed. In his first game back from suspension, Jackson made an illegal hit on Minnesota Vikings' quarterback Joshua Dobbs. Despite not being penalized in the game, the NFL clarified that Jackson's hit was illegal due to him lowering the crown of his helmet before the hit and issued him another four-game suspension the next day.The league denied Jackson's appeal for his second suspension, upholding their original four-game sentence. The Broncos waived Jackson on December 25. Houston Texans (second stint) On December 26, 2023, Jackson was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans. Jackson and head coach DeMeco Ryans were teammates on the Texans during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
  6. He will be turning 36 years old in a couple weeks. Doesn't seem like a smart move to me.
  7. Excellent post. I am not convinced our corners are no good. With Gus' scheme, Dion Sanders would probably have looked bad back there.
  8. It also says the Chiefs are seeking no less than a second round pick. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/report-titans-trade-for-ljarius-sneed-stymied-by-contract-talks Report: Titans’ trade for L’Jarius Sneed stymied by contract talks ...The Chiefs gave cornerback L’Jarius Sneed permission to seek a trade on Feb. 28. More than three weeks later, nothing has changed. Nate Taylor of TheAthletic.com reports that the Chiefs and Titans had the framework for a trade last week, but Tennessee could not come to terms with Sneed on a long-term deal... ...Sneed is seeking a three- or four-year deal that will make him one of the highest-paid players at his position. That has not happened and might not happen, especially now with free agency soon to enter its third week... ...The Vikings, Colts, Patriots, Lions, Falcons and Jaguars also reportedly expressed interest in Sneed, whose franchise tag number of $19.8 million counts against the Chiefs’ salary cap. The Lions traded with the Bucs to acquire cornerback Carlton Davis, and according to Taylor, the Patriots, Vikings and Falcons have “stopped engaging” with the Chiefs about Sneed. Jaire Alexander’s $21 million per year average is the highest in the NFL at the position, with Denzel Ward and Jalen Ramsey also at $20 million per season or more. Four other cornerbacks average at least $19 million per season. Sneed has never made the Pro Bowl and was called for 18 penalties last season, including the postseason. The Chiefs were seeking at least a second-round pick for Sneed, according to Taylor, but the trade compensation has become the easiest part of a complicated deal that now may or may not happen.
  9. Yep. Colts are on the bottom. Not surprising.
  10. I remember, at some point last season, in one of his media appearances, Ballard was asked directly, as to what was up with Cross... I cannot directly quote his response, but he explained how Cross was still struggling and learning, not able to crack into the lineup, etc. His comments did not leave me overly enthusiastic... But yes, you are right. At this point, the job probably is his too loose, yet I could see the Colts bringing in some quality competition.
  11. I am with you. although I hope for Cross to somehow become a great safety, from the little I have seen so far, I'm not counting on that, and I believe neither are the Colts.
  12. I wonder if the Colts can talk Mike Prior back out of retirement?
  13. Wow did Profootballtalk goof up this piece... C Danny Pinter will return to Colts on one-year deal https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/c-danny-pinter-will-return-to-colts-on-one-year-deal

McCarthy as Vikings trade to No. 3 Nate Davis USA TODAY 15. Indianapolis Colts: DT Byron Murphy II, Texas DeForest Buckner just turned 30 and is entering the final year of his contract. And though he may still be near his peak, why not bolster the havoc you can create on the inside by enlisting someone like Murphy at what has arguably become the league's most coveted defensive position. No quicker path to the likes of C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence than right up the gut.
