I’m not going to sit here and be hypocritical and so oh I always thought he was a bad hire or he is a bad coach...this doesn’t change any of that..but it defiantly changes my views on his decision making and attitude etc. I’m still just shocked beyond belief.

Odds are he already has IN WRITING an agreement to follow Belichick as the next Patriots HC,  whenever BB retires.

He may be hugely unpopular with the other 31 teams,  but he only needs to be popular with one.    The Pats.

There's no way he does this without it being in writing.

Still won’t be able to fill a staff because he screwed several assistants.  Who would want to work with him...

I wanted McDaniels as our next coach I'm not ashamed to admit it. However, I don't think I said anything bad about other candidates or those who were against McDaniels. So much for the goodwill that Ballard had supposedly worked out with the Patriots. Even though I am shocked and angry, I do have to admit that it does add excitement to the future of the Colts/Pats Rivalry. It's not time to be doom and gloom. This is one of 32 jobs in the whole world. We will find a qualified and good coach.I still trust Jim and Chris to lead the franchise in the direction we want to go.

You and @Superman have said this is likely intentional, but what's the motivation?  Is it to just blindside the Colts?  Or was McDaniels using it as leverage for his own gig in New England?

I think it's revenge for Deflategate, and just a chance to make the Colts look bad and screw up their offseason. Job well done, obviously.

And I know no one will believe me, but Belichick with the Jets has been in the back of my mind all along... If we get a first rounder from them like the Jets did, it will kind of be worth it, but I doubt that happens.

I am not a conspiracy theorist in the slightest, but I believe this to be true.

I don't

.

And here's why....

McDaniels and Ballard have the same agent.

I don't think McDaniels deliberately screws Ballard since they have the same agent.

Now....    do I think Kraft knew that McDaniels would love to be the next coach of the Pats and played this out to the last second deliberately?     Sure.      That could be.     But when you're preparing for a SB,  it's not hard to believe that BB was not intersted in talking about his future or talking with Kraft about McDaneils and would simply say,  let's talk about it after the game.

But that puts the stink on Kraft and BB and much less so on McDaneils in terms of thing being "deliberate."

All that said.....    this sucks for the Colts.     I'm not sure if Ballard hires a one-year temporary HC,  or tries to hire Toub and hope he works out for the best......

Nothing is surprising about that. Need to start calling the guy "Backup Plan Ballard."

But this isn't good, at all. Whoever we hire is officially our second choice, and everyone knows it. Maybe our third or fourth choice.

Or time to start the interview process afresh. Those guys in Philly never got interviewed.

Even if you don’t like McDaniels and you’re happy about this, this is a serious problem for us.

This hurts this team. How many qualified coaches did we turn away in favor of McDaniels?

This is...... unreal.

What this does is UN-ruin Andrew Luck's career!

We were heading down a dark road with McDaniels!

SAVED!!!

Slight bump in the road for now.

What the hell?? Did he not officially sign with Indy already? I don’t understand this at all!

Did we possibly sense this coming? The announcement was made as a play to prevent this from happening despite the fact that he had not yet actually signed, just verbally agreed.

Feel terrible for Matt Eberflus, Dave DeGuglielmo and Mike Phair. Hope the new coach can still retain them.

The new coach can and will retain them.     Can't imagine who wouldn't retain them.

At this late point in the cycle,  there are not a ton of attractive options out there.

Nobody can, or will trust him ever again because they don't wanna be as screwed over as the Colts are now.

I'm not entirely sold on McDaniels, personally. However let's be honest...this league has a short memory when it comes to success. How many teams did Parcells leave high and dry? But they kept hiring him, right?

...plenty of time to find a new head coach?!?!?! CUTE.

It's been over a MONTH since the colts fired Pagano, all the top candidate are gone. The other guys the Colts liked (Vrabel, Wilks, etc) are long gone. This is horrible scenario to be in. No way to sweeten this or make it sound better than it is the Colts are f*'d

I thought Vrabel signed with Tenn before you guys sent an offer to Josh.   But i kind of forget.

It is not the best situation, I agree and sucks for you guys.  It tough when one wants a coach who is still active in the playoffs.  I wish the coaching hiring did not start till after the season.

We do not know how Josh left it with the Colts FO, perhaps he let them know he would not make a final decision till after the SB.  Who knows.

it really sucks if he made a verbal commitment then backed out, that is just not right.

That raises some eyebrows.  Even the Colts thought this could happen?  I can't imagine any scenario where a team hires a head coach, but has enough doubt to have 3-4 other candidates ready to go

 A poorly run team, maybe?

Ultimate blow by that parasite Kraft in NE...Had this in the workings I bet..."Sweetening" McDaniels's contract...

Now, of course, we get to hire another guy who knows damn full well he wasn't the first choice...Can't believe my hatred for that organization could possibly deepen...

For Belichick, a guy who is quite mature and not worried about this kind of stuff, this seems unusually petty

It wasn't similar situation, BB with the Jets and McD and us. Except BB and McD screwed us and the Jets.

I just want to thank all the people who called me the $*&^&%! for not wanting Josh McCheat! You guys are my hero's!

:D

This news has made my day.

Oh you being right is more important than the Colts getting McDaniels?  Figures.

I'd wager it's at least partially if not totally deflategate related.. Which is fascinating, since it was the Patriots/Dorito Doink/The Deflator/Brady breaking the rules, not the Colts.

What a miserable bunch. I really genuinely hate that team. All of these media types trying to suggest somehow I'm small minded for not enjoying their crap..

So glad they lost that game Sunday.

Oh well the Patriots ship is sinking, I guess he wants to go down with them. I'm confident Ballard has a plan.

You're confident that Ballard has a plan?

Are you serious!

You mean like the plan he had to hire a worthless coach that totally embarrassed him and the Colts?

Ballard is going to take a big hit from this as he should.

Can't believe Colts would announce anything without a signed deal.... if he backed out of that the league needs to look at tampering by NE..  COACH GATE:gym:

Great Post!!

I think this is a very, VERY strong point.

If I'm Chris Ballard,  I'm on the phone with the NFL and telling them the Pats can keep McDaniels.

And we'll be happy to take their FIRST ROUND PICKS THE NEXT TWO YEARS!!   Period.       :colts:

    • What I’m reading on him the Pacers did get good value. Looks like he will need time to develop but he is in the right situation to do that. The pacers are stacking some quality young players that will prove to be more outstanding depth or assets if they choose to make a trade. Very exciting time for the team right now.
    • I’m not a religious person, but since you’re an educator I think you’re doing Gods work!   In these crazy insane times we’re all living in you’re doing one of the toughest jobs on earth.  And you’re teaching perhaps the most difficult generation to deal with.     From a distance it feels like you’re being very unfair to you.  I’m hoping in time you’ll see yourself in a completely different light.    Someone highly thought of.  A leader in the community.  A protector of young minds.   I couldn’t admire a teacher more.
    • You are too self-deprecating. You are one of the most respected and bright members here. You should never feel that you are failing. I'm sure your wife and children don't feel that way.  Indiana does not pay teachers what they deserve. But money is overrated. Having good morals and good character should be valued a lot more. JMO.
    • They make a heck of a lot more money than I do. Even those on the practice squad are making life changing money.    To be completely honest, as an educator I feel more like trash nowadays. One of those moments where I feel like I’m failing as a man, a husband, a father and a teacher. I would absolutely never consider an honest working NFL player as trash.
    • Food for thought… Once again, you continue to be your own worst enemy.     The Colts overall TE room is loaded with young players most of whom have had very little playing time for a variety of reasons.   So if you want to say the room might not be ranked high, that’s fair.    But you don’t say that.  You call them “trash”.  Why you feel that’s appropriate is a mystery.   Whenever you try the internet tough guy approach it typically blows up on you.     No one is trash.     You ignore the last three years and the QB and HC carousel the Colts have dealt with.  All of which has impacted the Colts weapons, especially the TE’s.   Ballard has publicly talked about how promising he thinks his TE room might be.   Woods, Granson, Ogletree, Mallory and MAC.    Only MAC is questionable and that’s because the salary hasn’t matched expectations.  But the first four?   All are promising.   They’re just young and looking for opportunity.  But they are NOT trash.     There’s a difference.
