Colts numbers that should be retired when the time comes

IMHO, the list and idea of retired numbers is a bit much.  For example, Jeff Saturday was a very good center for us.  But Ray Donaldson was very good as well.  James was a good RB back for us.  Tom Matte was too.  Now I know people will point out there numbers don't compare.  But that is because a different era.  John Unitas's numbers don't compare to Peyton Manning, but doesn't mean he wasn't great.  Guys like Lenny Lyles get forgotten as a very good DB.  For pass rushers, Fred Cook was the most dominant in a small window but sacks weren't counted then.

And I image 10 years from now, we will have Colts that will be up numbers that beat even guys like Reggie.

I think it is better now to just add someone to a Ring Of Honor.

63- Saturday

88- Marvin/Mackey

87-Reggie

18-Peyton

98- Mathis

93- Freeney

32- James

21- Davis(if continued)/Sanders (maybe)

Am I missing any significant ones?

If 88 didn't get retired for Mackey, it won't get retired for Marvin.

18 is the only number that has a chance; still, that's a big maybe.

Not a maybe, that's a definite. Manning is still largely beloved by Colts fans, and I highly doubt the organization would throw away the opportunity to retire his number since he spent the majority of his career wearing white and blue.

That will be a big day when that comes with a lot of celebrating.

Irsay has already said publicly that no player will ever wear 18 again.  No maybe about that one, 18 is retired.

You do realize that within a decade or so, if our front office approached retiring numbers so flippantly, we would, in fact, run out of numbers soon.....right?

Op meant well, and all of those players were great assets to our team, and should be recognized.

I just don't agree with retiring many numbers.

As I stated earlier in the thread, and many others have echoed my thoughts, #18 for sure, but that's probably it.

People would do well to understand the difference between elevating a retired player to the Ring of Honor, and retiring a jersey number.

The aforementioned is meant to honor great players who contributed vastly to the team.

Retiring a jersey number is a supreme honor, reserved for the absolute best of the best of the best. A level of honor befitting Peyton Manning, but no others who have ever worn a Colts jersey in Indy.

It is not a snub to Marvin or Edgerrin to not have their jersey number retired. They understand the difference between what they accomplished, and what Manning accomplished.

......... this isn't college. We can't have multiple players with the same number running around due to shortage of available numbers

While your distinction is spot on, the thought of retiring a number to proclaim greatness is pretty futile. I think most folk know now great 18 was without this type of gesture.

I personally don't really Beleive in retiring #'s. When you retire a great players #, no other player will ever wear that #, and because of that you remember that player less because you don't see his # to remind you of him. In a way he sort of becomes forgotten.

Let's take Mickey Mantle for example. His #7 is of course retired, and not seen anymore,so I think he is remembered less as if say another yankee wore #7.

Just another way, maybe dorky way to look at it. Lol

still you can't just bring in some rookie & hand him an 18 jersey. you just can't

Of course you can. That's just silly. Are you seriously telling me that you would feel Manning's legacy would be diminished if a future QB donned the same number? I just don't get it. Perhaps it's my 'soccer' upbringing. No offense by the way sir.

No maybe about it. 18 won't be worn by another colt

Yep, and #18 was a retired number by the Broncos four years ago. Guess who's wearing that now.

Never say never.

Retiring numbers is the dumbest thing in sports amd should be outlawed by leagues. Pretty soon, players will be wearing triple digits and fractions as numbers.

The dumbest thing in sports?  Yeah, that is a bit of an overstatement.

    • So true. I was watching his presser yesterday as I wanted to get a feel for him after some of the negativity surrounding his personality on the draft day, and I LOVED how happy and excited he was. I had a little fear that some of the fan base would buy into the negativity prematurely and make it a rough start for him, but I don’t think so anymore.    I think he and Latu are both going to be playmakers for us, if not this year then very soon. Have a feeling they bring exactly want this team needed to finally take off. They bring a lot of faith to me, together with Richardson and Steichen. Can’t explain it, but the pieces to the puzzle is suddenly to see on the table.
    • Cubs beat the Pirates tonight but the Brewers won as well, what else is new lol. Cubs are now 23-16, Brewers are 23-15.
    • Couldn’t agree more! The chip on his shoulder is a very good look. That said, I have always valued the “clutch” gene in players.    It’s truly something that can’t be coached and can’t be taught. AD has IT! Period. Exclamation point! He has it. Name a better receiver in the college football playoffs/ championships ever…   You can’t teach that. He has it. He can be that guy. He is the 33-32 Colts over the Pats, 4th and 1, AFC Championship, game changer. He can be that guy… Will he? I have no dang idea. But does he have the ability to be? Yes! Resounding, yes!
    • I absolutely LOVE that Mitchell picked 10 as a constant reminder that 10 WR’s were picked before him.  That is a GIGANTIC chip on his shoulder.   So far I like everything I’m reading about the kid.  There may be speed bump or hiccup some day….  But so far so good.
