If Collins becomes a free agent and Ballard wants him we can use both Geathers and Collins. Can’t have to many safeties when that position seems to get injured a lot.  Hooker, Geathers and Collins could be pretty good.

For continuity and leadership purposes I'd love to see him re-signed. It does not preclude a draft pick or another free agent signee......

I saw a interview with him with joe Reitz. He is such a great guy. I could tell by the interview he is a great leader and works his butt off.

Well now that people know Ballard wants Geathers back the opinion on him will be more positive.

You have to wonder what his value is to the rest of the NFL. He’s a Solid player with a scary injury history( because it’s a recurring neck issue). 

Hes likely more valuable  to the Colts than any other team because of his leadership in the locker room. Is 2 years  8 m with 6 guaranteed a fair deal?

Geathers, inman and Desir are obviously at the top of signings for the Colts, since they are are being talked to first. Bring then all back at cap friendly deals.

The one thing that is not in doubt is that Ballard loves Geathers.  He was gushing over him at the end of the season.

 

If the money is right, he will be back.

I think we're going to have to sign Geathers. We're pretty light at Safety and I don't think he will command a huge pay check when you consider his injuries.

I'd love for him to come back. But you can't discount how much his injuries have impacted safety play. Re-sign him, but that's got to factor in on his salary. 

 

I still think you have to look at safety in the draft. I'd like to see Farley re-signed as well.

I think this could be similar to Mewhort last year. Relatively inexpensive one year deal but still look to upgrade at the position.

Or, Darius Butler the year before.  Didn't stop him from drafting Hooker.

Considering the number of safeties that are going to be available in FA and many of them good ones I wouldn't be surprised if he resigns with us soon.  I have to believe Ballard will make him an offer that should he should be happy with.

Geathers isn't the best safety out there but he's a solid player.  Seems silly to focus a great deal on him when there are bigger needs.

I'm just wondering what the rest of the Board believes would be a fair offer to Geathers.

2 years $8 mil. would be very fair, like you said, we will find out if Ballard wants him around for 1 or 2 years. I would not be surprised either if he gets offered just a 1 yr. $3 mil. deal and nothing more.

 Agree with you there. For those who want an “upgrade” , I agree as well.

   But if Geathers stays healthy and we see him start to enter his prime, keeping him could also be an upgrade. There’s something to be said about having continuity in the secondary.

Can we upgrade? Yes, but for what we ask geathers to do on our defense hes perfect for the role. Yes he has a history of injuries, but you can see a difference in our defense when hes on the field

I like Geathers a lot, there is no getting around his injury history though. An incentive laden deal with Bonuses linked to staying healthy should be the right deal.

Not likely. If we do, we'll probably resign farley or Mitchell or draft a S in the mid rounds

I'm only signing him to a short 1-2 year deal. $4-5 million per year max.

Given his market is likely to be limited we can probably sign him at decent value. Probably with a low guarantee and he can compete in camp for his spot. Seems a fair, sensible way forward for me. 

 

He’s better than people give him credit for when healthy... when being the issue.

I think some people will be suprised at Geather's contract.  I think he will get around 6 M APY.  

 

3 years - 18M - 5M guaranteed.  

 

That's my guess anyways.

But if his FA market never really appears,  I suppose he might have an interest in returning as a situational 3rd DB.    Maybe?    (A real longshot)

There is plenty of opportunity to run packages with 3 safeties. Theoretically, Geathers could not start but still log a number of snaps, right?

Yes.   Agreed.    But is that what Geathers is willing to do?      Over, maybe starting elsewhere at a better number?     Hard to know.

 

This is the contract where a player typically wants to be PAID.    This is where he sets himself and his family up for a better future.    Hope it's witht he Colts.....  but we'll have to see.

  If the Colts don't see Geathers injury history as hurtful to his future then he will get a fair offer. In the Playoffs they did put him in at LB for Walker in some passing situations. Walker isn't bad in coverage IMO, just a little lacking. That does tell me they like G ok at doing that. All part of establishing his value/replacibility.
We are in a great position to sign a very good FA safety, and to draft a good prospect.

Here is the thing though. If someone is offering you millions and another team offers you a couple million more what’s really the difference. You can’t set your family up well with millions?  Wouldn’t you rather be on a great team with a winning culture. It’s not like the colts would offer him peanuts.

That logic makes sense but the player doesn't see it that way and I guess if I was in the same situation I'd do the same thing. You never know when you could have a career ending injury and you'll never have an opportunity to make that kind of money doing anything else. I would get the most I could get while the getting is good in there career and life. I'd want a long term too.

To have a shot at championships? Hell yeah I would especially when I'm already getting a big contract anyway. I'd much rather be a rich athlete that wins than a rich athlete that loses every year

Lets just throw our some made up number. Let’s say the colts offered him a two year 5 million contract. another team offered him 7 million three years. One team is terrible and the other could win a SB. At that point your making millions on either contract. Yes I would take less because your already a millionaire and both contracts are in the millions. 

 

Even if he hits FA I think he is coming back. He isn’t going to get that much in the FA market with his injury history. Also don’t matter if we are able to sign a big time safety because his contact won’t be huge with that neck injury.
