INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts open up the 2018 regular season on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Lucas Oil Stadium and, accordingly, it’s time to look at the team’s unofficial depth chart for the matchup.

Last month, we brought you the first unofficial depth chart of the preseason, but lots has changed since that time — most notably, this past weekend’s roster cuts, which resulted in the Colts’ first 53-man roster of the regular season.

So this time around, the list is obviously a lot lighter — and there are a few other changes here and there. Without further ado, here is the Colts’ first unofficial depth chart of the 2018 regular season, with some notes for each unit:

OFFENSE:

WR: Ryan Grant, Zach Pascal, Marcus Johnson

LT: Anthony Castonzo, Le'Raven Clark

LG: Quenton Nelson, Mark Glowinski

C: Ryan Kelly, Joe Haeg

RG: Matt Slauson, Braden Smith

RT: Joe Haeg, J'Marcus Webb, Denzelle Good

TE: Jack Doyle, Ryan Hewitt

WR: T.Y. Hilton, Chester Rogers

QB: Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett

TE: Eric Ebron, Erik Swoope

RB: Marlon Mack, Jordan Wilkins, Nyheim Hines, Christine Michael

Notes: The primary difference between the Week 1 and preseason unofficial depth charts is that Joe Haeg is listed as the No. 1 right tackle. We'll always harp, though, the importance of the word "unofficial," though, so keep that in mind.

----------------

DEFENSE:

DE: Jabaal Sheard, Kemoko Turay

NT: Al Woods, Grover Stewart

UT: Denico Autry, Hassan Ridgeway

DE: Margus Hunt, Tarell Basham, Al-Quadin Muhammad

WLB: Darius Leonard, Matthew Adams

MLB: Anthony Walker, Skai Moore

SAM: Najee Goode, Zaire Franklin

CB: Kenny Moore II, Quincy Wilson, Chris Milton

FS: Malik Hooker, George Odum, Corey Moore

SS: Clayton Geathers, Matthias Farley

CB: Nate Hairston, Pierre Desir

Notes: At one of the defensive end spots, Margus Hunt is listed as a starter, with rookie Kemoko Turay as the backup; Turay was listed as a No. 1 defensive end during the preseason. Positional flexibility at the linebacker position is also on display here, as Matthew Adams, listed as a SAM linebacker during the preseason, is now listed as the No. 2 WILL linebacker, while Zaire Franklin, formerly listed as a MIKE linebacker, is now listed as a SAM linebacker. Really, those guys were seen at multiple spots during training camp and the preseason. Also, at cornerback, Nate Hairston is now listed as a starter on the Week 1 unofficial depth chart; Pierre Desir was in that spot during the preseason.

----------------

SPECIALISTS:

P: Rigoberto Sanchez

K: Adam Vinatieri

LS: Luke Rhodes

KR: Chester Rogers, Zach Pascal, Nyheim Hines

PR: Chester Rogers, Zach Pascal, T.Y. Hilton

Notes: Chester Rogers is now listed as the No. 1 kick and punt returner; rookie Nyheim Hines was listed at both of those spots during the preseason.

Good Grief Hunt stating at DE are they out of their mind.

I really dont get the DE depth chart.  Ballard said Sheard and Hunt were ahead of Simon at the same position (LE), and we need speed and get off on the opposite side.  Then why the heck is Hunt starting there? And why is Turay, easily our most explosive DE, listed behind Sheard the LE?  My only thought is that we know our run D is going to be an abomination so we are putting Hunt in as one attempt to make it less so.  In that case just keep Simon lol.

Adams at WILL is strange too.

I hope "unofficial" means "randomly thrown together" because that's what it looks like at spots.

How is Nyheim "The Fumble" Hines our RB3?

Nyheim will be used more as a receiving threat than a typical runningback. I'm hopeful that he can do what we hope he's capable of doing -- creating mismatches against LBs out in space.

I think depth charts default into assuming the opposition runs the ball on 1st and 2nd downs.  I don't think they mean much.

I guess what I was getting at is that Simon's questionable fit at RE means very little if we are willing to stick Hunt there.

Agree.  Will see Turay in on most all 3rd downs and some 2nd and longs.

Probably.  Then why list him behind Sheard at LE though?

Even if Hines catches a pass, a gush of wind will cause him to fumble the ball though. If Cincy were smart, they would let Hines catch the ball every time he is in the game. Guaranteed fumble

Now that Haeg is a starter (probably only for a short time??), if he and Kelly go down at the same time...I guess we re-sign Bond??

I guess since Vuj is now gone that's less of a possibility of happening, though, ha.

That would just mean Slauson is the center Smith is RG and Webb is RT. Lets not wish for multiple injuries at once.

No, they want a bigger front 4 on early/run downs in the base defense. Then on passing downs, they bring bashem or turay in and either kick hunt inside or bring him off the field.

Yeah, that's the plan.  Not that we saw any indication that he's capable of doing it during the preseason.  I just hope he can hold on to the ball.  If not, they need to move on.

Frankly, if we're keeping Hunt because of his run stopping ability, I'd just as soon have kept Henry Anderson last year.  He was slimmed down to about Hunt's size when he was released.

This is how I feel.  Hunt seems not really great at anything and Anderson had a lot of promise in a different alignment.  I just don't understand why we didn't even give him a chance.

I guess we were all in with changing schemes, which creates turnover just because of that.

Listing the talent that we had here the past two seasons:

Sheard, Simon, Ridgeway, Anderson, Woods, Geathers, and Hooker.  We added Walker Jr and Leonard.  Hairston would go back to slot.  Would we have kept Melvin if we weren't changing schemes?

We'd really just need another good corner and that elusive outside EDGE guy.

Games didn't count.... let's hope he is ready for the season and Frank Reich hasn't shown his cards!

I'm counting on the fact they didn't show anything as far as gameplanning in the preseason.  Although Reich said they showed about 70% of the plays.

What I didn't see from Hines is that speed or elusiveness.

I'm not understanding why wilson not starting smh

Wilson was a back up last year. With a weaker DB group this year, I thought Wilson would get the start over Moore, but for a second year, even with new coaches, he's a backup. Maybe he's not as good as we were hoping he'd be.

Not saying he's bad, but clearly he's not good enough to be a starter right now.

Pretty much as expected except the second string LB's switching up positions and the loss of Simon.  I said Haeg would be the RT, you gotta go with the guy that is always available and knows his assignments.  He'll be ok there with some help.  I can't wait for the first game. Let's not start writing the team or players off just yet.  The only total stinker was Howard and we cut him.  Onward and upward!

Ryan Grant as WR2? My goodness our WR's are trash lol

Ryan Grant is a solid WR.. I am punished by living in the DC area and having to listen to Redskins analysis on the local radio. Ryan Grant will be the best FA WR the colts have had in the Andrew Luck era.  He will be the slot guy we have been missing since Stokley

Encouraged by Woods and Autry at DT and hope that Ridgeway can keep up his form from the preseason.  Praying for our safeties to stay healthy which could help us cover up some other weaknesses.

Cringe at our CB depth. Thought Hairston played pretty well last year, looking for him to grow into a really good player for us.

I thought when Q. Wilson was drafted his strengths were more towards press style coverage.  Now he is stuck playing off coverage in Tampa 2.  Colts not utilizing his skill set effectively thus he appears to suck now.   He was more geared to the defense that Pagano wanted to run but couldn't get on the field because he found himself in Chuck's doghouse.

He was solid with the Redskins.  Not a star but pretty reliable.  He was mediocre in the preseason but that isn't always the best barometer as we can tell by some of the guys who did or did not make the team this season.  I agree that he will perform closer to his Redskin level of play as he gets more comfortable with Luck and the offense.

He has the skills, but much like TJ Green he doesnt seem to have it between the ears.
