that argument gets thrown around way, WAY more often than it should.  Bottom line, is he's a stop-gap edge rusher, not a long term solution, so really it doesn't matter whether he's better as a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB

Now that depends on contract.  Over 4 mil, he is a waste.  He reminds me of Werner.

As for the 3-4/4-3 argument goes, not all of the small 4-3 DEs in college can convert to 3-4 OLB.  Cole played in Eagles 4-3 better than last year as a 3-4 OLB.

Yikes thats a lot of money for a rotational pass rusher!

Nice signing, but dang thats way too much money.  Colts have plenty to play with though and its a short term deal.. im just sitting back and waiting to see if they sure up their interior defensive line or not..  if they don't then they'll be another easy win, if they do then they'll be contenders

How?  He's being brought in to be an edge rusher.  He'll be an edge rusher whether as a DE in a 4 man front, or as a RushLB in the 3-4 front.  His primary job will be to rush the passer.

Over 4 mil, he is a waste.  He reminds me of Werner.

He reminds you of Werner?  How?  The one thing Werner has not been good at is rushing the passer.  He's been better at playing SamLB.  Cole is a pass rush specialist.  How are they similar?

Hmm...so Cole played better for the 9 years he was a DE than he did the first year they converted him to OLB?  That's supposed to come as a surprise?  We're not talking about a college player, we're talking about an 11 year NFL veteran pass rusher that was brought in to....wait for it....rush the passer.  If he wants to put his hand in the dirt to rush the passer, I'm pretty sure the staff will let him.

Please explain to me in what way he reminds you of Werner?

Reminds of Werner? do you have blinders on to not see what kind of player Cole is? There are other teams in the NFL besides the Colts that have good players that you may not know of. Cole is a STAR! Yes, 8 mil Is a lot, but ex-Eagle connection Ryan probably had to overpay to sign him. We all hope Werner can be half the player Cole is. Fans complain D is soft for decades; last really tough year team was 95 Colts. So we get a top player but complain, complain and complain about the money and age.

I think we overpaid because Mathis is NOT going to be ready when the season starts.

Candidate for PUP list.

Cole and Newsome on the rush/weakside

Walden and Werner on the edge/strong side

Mathis on the PUP list.

That's my prediction and I'm sticking to it until proven otherwise......

That seems reasonable. Even if Mathis starts week one, would be a great rotation

Sorry,  I screwed up my post that you reacted to...

Should be Cole and Newsome on rush/Weakside as I think Mathis starts on the PUP.

I suspect you knew what I was going for, but wanted to make that clear for others....

Makes it hard for you to complain about him when we're 11-5 and have lost to the Patriots in November...

That's a joke, everybody.

There's so much money out there , I have no idea what people expect. We can be pretty certain by the tweets we saw that around 4 teams were trying to sign him. He's a nice player... good against the run and can rush the passer. Grigson doing pretty well Imo.

Grigson must have gotten into Jimmy's stash

Your statement struck me as funny. I like your style BOTT.

Look at the guarantee and calm down.

Touche corgi.

That's what the draft is for.  You build with youth...you augment with experience.

Welcome to the double edged sword that is free agency.  The moderate to lower priced free agents are either going to be over 30 or coming off some kind of injury or both.   Colts have many holes to fill so they are being economical even with their amount of cap space.

I'm okay with the Cole signing.  As others have said...can't have too many pass rushers.

Solid points there CM1788. I'm cool with Trent as long as he doesn't get put on IR this season. I just worry about LBs once they hit or surpass age 30 that's all. He's been available most of his career so I hope this trend continues.  What concerns me most are bicep tears, tricep tears, & knee issues at that age. No, I'm no athletic trainer or Dr. I realize that.

Yep CF12, that was my main issue with this LB. Not his experience or tenacity but his age. I just hope he stays healthy for 2 years. I want our LB core to get younger & faster not old & slow.

yeah I understand a few 30 year old stop gaps but so far were gonna have Gore Cole Adams Jackson Mathis Herramans Langford is 29 and possibly Andre Johnson

Who cares how old they are? I care about whether they can play at a high level.

Unless we're giving out 4+ years and huge signing bonuses, I'm not worried about their age.

I just like the idea of not having the same holes in a year cause we filled them this year with old guys

You can't just blame the coaching staff if a guy doesn't develop. Sometimes, most of the time, it's on the player.

escept he did....under another coaching staff. It isn't like dungy and our staff developed a bunch of studs. We lived off freeney and Mathis for a long time and guys like Jennings and Hughes got better elsewhere. Not saying it's all on the coaches I get you but still it was a good pick and good fit for us. For whatever the reason we/he failed to get the the most out of him here as opposed to buffalo.

There's this event in about a month and a half, the NFL actually sponsors it. They've arranged for NFL teams to select former college players that they think will be good in the NFL. Each team gets about 7 picks or so, and can use those picks on any player they want.

/sarcasm

I don't think you need to worry about that. We'll probably draft a back and a WR, regardless of Gore and AJ (assuming). We'll probably add some DL and a pass rusher, despite Langford and Cole. These "old guys" aren't changing the long term projections for the roster.

yes I know the draft is coming it's what everyone says but they haven't proved anything yet the guys in FA have that's my only point

Free agency is just as risky as the draft. Maybe more, because of the money involved.

I think we've signed good players, and I don't think we've committed a lot of money to them. That's what I care about.

And Darius Butler developed under the colts coaching staff and not the patriots. Should we blame Belichick and his staff? Many times it's just young guys finally growing up.

Jeesh, Bring in some big name players and people still are not happy...Not surprising

I mean I like all of them too i only didnt like Trent at first cause I had no idea he had been in a 3-4 last season thought he was a 4-3 DE I want Johnson and I like gore I don't mind Langford if he's depth only I hated missing Searcy and we only got Adams and the draft is very S weak

There are safeties in the draft. Whether we get one is undetermined at this point.

Long way to go, is all I'm saying. I don't think Grigson is done, but I do think he made the team better today. And I don't think he sacrificed anything long term to do it.

I agree I just hoped for a guy who would be here awhile maybe we can still get Fairley or Knighton who knows

I live in PA. I watch nearly every Eagles game. He only had 6 sacks last season. I liked him a few years ago.

hes going to replace werner as the starter.  cole actually has some speed and pass rush moves.

6 sacks is more than werner has ever done

Well SW1 that's the scary thing with any upcoming season...no matter how excited we may get after all of these free agent signings and draft picks, inevitably we know that there are going to be injuries and that the roster at the end of the season will likely to be missing some key cogs that we were counting on going into it.  Age certainly can make a player more susceptible to injury but heck you just never know who will succumb...sometimes it's not even about age...freak things just happen.  Hopefully, this team can build up enough depth so that they can weather whatever injuries occur.   It's a war of attrition.
