Grading The Vontae Davis Trade (So Far)

Good trade in all, I wasn't sure about it at first. Injuries at a young age are worrying but I'd say the potential is great.

B+

cannot forget the OLB position either. Freeney may very well not be signed in the off season.

THANK THE LORD....  HIS 19m cap hit goes away,...

border line C+ /B-

he has been beat on a few plays, some plays he looks out of shape, and the injuries do not help the cause. yeah he made some good plays but def. was not worth a 2nd round pick. especially when guys like talib and assante samuel went awhole lot cheaper. i think we could have had him with a 3rd or 4th round pick mixed in with a 6th or 7th round pick.

but i am happy the colts did try to improve the secondary with this trade, that i give an A+ too.

Talib brings to his new team his off-field issues, Samuel - his big contract and age.

Grade C. Still out of shape and you can tell. Would've been about to have more INT if he was at full conditioning. He was also able to deliver blows as he set-up WR's.

B-

Really if you take a look at some of the guys drafted in 2nd round this year half of them if not most of them are either not starting or not have very good production in their rookie years. The Davis trade has given us a starter, but is worth the potential for what we could have gotten in the 2nd round? Only time will tell, but when I see Powers is on IR and Vaughn is next up to be our No.1, I become thankful that Grigson made this move. We needed a starting CB and we got him.

I'd give Davis a C.

He's had some very bad games this year. Last week, he allowed 8 catches (on 10 targets) for 118 yards, and a touchdown. That's terrible for a #1 corner.

He allowed a huge game from Calvin (although, I'll give him some slack there).

However, he is an upgrade over any cornerback the Colts have had in the last 5 years, and I love the trade that Grigson did, and I think time will help him grow into a better player, and get him more comfortable with this system.

Davis rarely linep up across from Calvin. For the majority of the snaps, Vaughn was covering Calvin and allowed lots of yards. Didn't get much help either.

Davis saw a little less than 50% of the snaps against Calvin, and during that time allowed big plays including a touchdown.

There's much more than that game too.,...

Andre Johnson makes 95% of CB's look silly, so I won't even knock him for that.

I give him a B so far. He's forced QB's to throw to the other side of the field a lot. That's where most completions have come against us.

I'll give him a C+ he has been good at times, but against big names he is less of a factor. I think if we were able to get more pressure on qbs, he would be far better. That said, as a true 3-4 defense fills in around him, I think he will get a LOT better. We need to get way more pressure. It could definitely turn into turnover city. Cassius and Darius both look aggressive when they know they have help which I think is important, and since they are young, I think they could actually become viable starters.

B- (must stop dropping easy passes, must start making hard catches) not that he hasnt made some tough catches but he needs to step his game up, HOWEVER, he is a rook, so was Garcon. Garcon is much better 2nd 3rd years. i think he's got a high ceiling .... if he gets an A or A+, then he's already great. not the case.

Davis owned today. Should have 2 INTs today, but Ron Winter & crew struck like normal.

Probably Davis' best game so far.

If I had to guess, I'm thinking he thought he was posting in a Hilton thread....

Someone should lose their job for that call. There is no credibility/culpability for these NFL refs.

I'd say B, would be a B+ if he hadn't missed games. Not an A since he has struggled in a few games.

He should've got 2 INTs today but the refs where being terrible as usual and called a PI on a pick when it clearly wasnt a PI.

He was great today. Coverage was spot on virtually every play, and he should have had two picks through no fault of his own.

Shame the run D didn't perform to the same standard (or to any standard at all)

They don't lose their job, but get graded. if score isn't high enough, no playoff games or SB reffing for them.

Anyone doubting this trade hasn't looked at our last 6 second round picks. Davis is a sure thing. The draft is a crap shoot.

He gets a solid B+ from me, with extra credit for today's effort...giving him an A-

Well worth the trade. I predict a breakout season for him next year. Talent is there. Physicality. Stability, pagano, training camp, better players around him. He is gonna become one of our leaders, IMO.

This is a solid B or A trade.

This is a decent trade made great seeing as how our draft picks are coming at the very end of the round.

Highly doubt you find a great corner that is just as good as Vontae Davis without really gambling or taking a shot on someone.

I was skeptical of this trade when it happened, but it was due to off-field concerns. He's got the talent to be a top corner. If he continues on this path and doesn't let his head get in the way, then I'd say this was a good trade worthy of at least a solid 'B'.

I'll give it a solid B.  If he played more games for us the grade would be higher.  Still for what will turn out to be a low 2nd round draft pick...it's a great deal for the Colts.

B-/C

Butler IMO has been our best corner with Davis a close second. Everyone else has been shoddy.(Powers was playing alright b4 injury)

All i know is Vaughan needs to go....big time

  • I give it an A-,  The guy  has played well ( today case in point) and seems to have a bright future. The key is he is very young and still on his rookie conntract. So it is not like we gave a pick for a high priced veteran.

Another way to look at is, can you imagine if we we didn't have him going into next year. Everyone would be clamouring to draft a CB in the first round.

I have no idea why these bullet points are coming up!

I said incomplete earlier in the thread.  I now move his grade to a solid B.  His run defense is going to be the best since Sanders in time (did I say that? :)) and I love the way he uses his body in coverage.(yes I know Sanders was a safety)

I am old school Colt Fans........I still cringe on giving up a 2.  We would not however get anyone as ready to help us next year in this year's draft.....so we have a very solid start at corner!!  I pronounce the trade a winner.   :headspin:  :dancing: !!!!  If Butler continues to improve, we bring in a FA and/or some draft help we will be set for awhile.  Go Davis....go  :coltshelmet:  :coltshelmet:  :coltshelmet:  :coltshelmet:  :coltshelmet:!!!!!!!!!

Vontae Davis: A

Throw in David Amerson, Carrington Byndom, Keenan Lewis, or Milli from Bama & I'll be happy. Davis is our best CB by a longshot all we need is a partner in crime for him & a dominant pass rush. The future is looking bright for this Defense. Teams won't be so confident facing our Defense like they've been in past years

I'd give it a B+, but I think this one is going to work out into an A in time.

I'm really hopeful that the Chapman pick works out for us next year (he sounds like he could be a good one when he is healthy). I think we need another solid DE for the rotation across from Redding. Moala could be the guy, but I think we might be able to do better.

Beef up the offensive and defensive lines (maybe add another young corner), and we should be immensely better.

I like Jordan Poyer from Oregon State as well. As far as corners go, even Logan Ryans from Rutgers

    •   Not only wouldn't they win a Super Bowl,  they wouldn't make the playoffs.   They'd likely struggle to win 8 games.   There's no short-cut for experience.     Not even great talent....
    • Me too! I think speed, quickness and good hands ought to work. I wonder if he can block in pass pro?
    • What about a rookies/sophomores team combo? That might be a much better chance at winning the Super Bowl.   QB - Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott RB - Ezekiel Elliott, Jordan Howard RB/FB - Leonard Fournette TE - Hunter Henry, OJ Howard, Evan Engram WR - Michael Thomas, Corey Davis, Tyreke Hill, Christian MaCaffrey OT - Jack Conklin, Ronnie Staley, Laremy Tunsil, Taylor Decker OG - Cody Whitehair, Forrest Lamp C - Ryan Kelly, Nick Martin   DE - Myles Garrett DT - Joey Bosa DT - DeForest Buckner DE - Soloman Thomas   OLB - Noah Spence, Yannick Ngakoue ILB - Haason Reddick, Reuben Foster OLB - Deion Jones, Darron Lee   CB - Jalen Ramsey, Vernon Hargraves Jr, Artie Burns SS - Keanu Neal, Karl Joseph, Jabrill Peppers FS - Jamal Adams, Malik Hooker   K - Rigoberto Sanchez P - Austin Rekhow
    • I wouldn't call protecting your kid as coddling with over 300,000 brain injuries in the US every year. I guess those 300,000 unlikely injuries didn't happen?
    •   Haven't seen the video, nor am I any good at determining injuries from them (Dr. Chao is quite good at it though...)   I never heard, then or up until and including now, concerning vasculature or neuro issues.  That indicated to me back then, and still does today, that TB could regain his starting QB job   But a QB competition could serve them both well.at some point in time .  But lets be real.  TB is still not recovered... when he does he will not be 'as good as new'.  But agree he could be quite nice anyway. And... he will have to earn (beat out Sam) his QB job back.  It won't be handed to him on a platter, trust me.

    •   Sorry to keep harping on the Irish thing, but did you know the horseshoe has seven points on it?  (The Colts horseshoe, anyway.  Actual shoes for horses depend on the farrier).   Seven is considered a lucky number...  Lucky.  Luck.  I'm telling you, you picked the right team to root for.   7
    •   Don't hold Boston against the Irish.  It's not our fault.    We love our green, which makes Indiana a tearmann.   I love it that you chose to root for an underdog instead of the Pats.  I don't think it's coincidence that you became a fan around the time Luck got drafted to the Colts.  That's providence.     Horseshoe?  Luck?  Four-leaf clover?  Come on.  Hoosier Hospitality has roots in Irish fun-lovery.  If you're lucky enough to be Irish, you're lucky enough!  May the luck of the Irish be with you!
