Report: Jack Mewhort back on one year deal

Looks like it's going to be a competition for the starting OG spots.

Not convinced he will even make out of preseason (wasn't he mulling retirement at one point?)...but having more options is always good. If Mewhort can stay healthy, it would be very convenient for himself and the Colts.

If he was considering retiring, but has now signed a deal, then maybe the health prognosis is very good.  Otherwise, I would think the long term effects of the injuries would make him think twice if they were that bad.  Just a thought.

Really wisk Jack every sucess this year. A year ago most people had him as our most solid offensive lineman and would get a multi million dollar deal, he was a bloody good guard in his first couple of years. Last year he was poor for sure but if he can rediscover his form, he would be a huge asset to the team.

Also put him back at LG beside Kelly and AC, thats where he has played his best football.

This is not a negative...just an observation.

It's interesting that Mewhort points to the Colts' confidence in his knee as a reason for re-signing. Offering $1.5M for a starting OG in this market doesn't exaclty scream confidence (even with incentives). And even if he hits the incentives, that's still $2M less than they paid some WR4 who just failed a physical (even if that failed physical was questionable).

It's a good deal though nonetheless.

Or he and the team know he has one more year. He gives us 8-10 games, gets a thank you from the Colts in $$ for giving us his all, and he retires.

Or he knows we could’ve kicked him to the curb like a ton of other clubs *cough* Belichick *cough*  , but we stayed loyal and showed belief in him.

This is all about two parties respecting each other.

That could be it as well. They might know he won't be ready until a few games into the seasons. Maybe the Colts have given him some assurances that he wouldn't get elsewhere.

Or it could just be that $1.5M with another $1.5M in incentives was the most he was being offered.

    • Well, have they been able to be utilized?  Meaning, have they been open, are they being prioritized in the game plan?     sometimes it’s more than just “the qb not seeing them”.  That’s why I said idk what’s going on. Could be Shane has AR looking downfield, or by the time AR goes through his reads the tight ends aren’t open, or they’re not getting open.     if I had to give you an answer, I’d say it’s more on the playcalling/coaching.  I’ve mentioned before that it seems Shane has AR doing something different than what he was doing last year.  Seems AR is slinging it and throwing deep more from the pocket than last year.  Even the passes the TEs have caught this year seem to be deeper shots.
    • I think I said the floor was 7 wins and the ceiling was 10.  Right now, I’m leaning more towards the floor.
    • Is singling out the TEs the real issue? So far AR hasn't tried to utilize his TEs.  Like any fan I want a dominant TE but it's up to the QB to make that happen
    • I miss Bob Sanders smacking the crap out of dudes.  I feel like this defense hasn’t had that same intensity and nastiness since then.  Even when Shaq was out there being an absolute menace, the defense still had a little softness to it.  With every good defense, there’s either one or a couple of players you can point and say “that’s the bad guy no one wants to go against”.  That menace defensive player that teams have to game plan for.  I think Latu can become that guy.
    • Yup, besides the defensive line, the tight end room has performed the worst through the first 3 games.  You’ll have the one flash by a tight end and then that’s it for the rest of the game.  Idk if it’s playcalling or lack of talent because last year it seemed with AR our tight ends were outperforming our wide receivers.     But 100% agree.  Tight ends are on my list for the reasons why the offense has looked the way it looks.
