Considering that this is Terrell's first season back at his college position of DE, And his first season being played under a new position of OLB, Does Basham have some slack/time to get his game to form for the Indy Colts?

Yes....  he has time to round into form.

I just read on the website today where Reich says Basham has flashed the past few weeks.    So maybe it’s happening for him right now...

Who is Terrell Basham? Is he Tarrell Basham's brother?

Much like Bjeorn Werner, Basham should excel now that he has made the monumental move going from a pass rusher to.......a pass rusher.

I was about to make the argument that Werner never had the physical tools to be a good pass rushers (IIRC someone at the time pointed out his 3 cone time was a bad sign), then I looked up Basham’s own combine numbers.

Here’s a half decent piece about it:

It was one reason I’m not as high on Bradley Chubb as others,

So our 3rd rd pick Basham had a 3 cone time slower than the average top level pass rushers.

So ANYONE that expects him to be an ELITE pass rusher someday was/is silly.
I look forward to judging the guy halfway through his 3rd season.
At that point i hope to see a guy that sets a very good edge and can get us 6 sacks with lots of hits and hurries..
That would make him a very good draft pick.

At least Bjorn Werner showed flashes and seemed to smack down a lot of balls. Basham should hopefully show something this season. We don't have time to experiment for the next few years. Someone needs to flash early on and improve from there to be a 8-10+ sack guy.

I wasn’t suggesting that it was stupid to think that, just unlikely. 3 cone time isn’t the be all and end all.

You do raise good points in that it’s a 3rd not 1st rounder we are talking about and that there is more to a DE than just sacks.

It is going to be a long season, defensively at least. However, there are several pass rushers in history that were late bloomers. Off the top of my head, I looked up James Harrison, who I remembered was a late bloomer, here are his stats:

http://www.nfl.com/player/jamesharrison/2504844/careerstats

He had 4 sacks in his first 4 years, think about that. If we owe it to our new coaches to see how our young players develop, we have to give them and Basham this year at least to see how he develops, that is a minimum, IMO.

While his 3 cone is mediocre at best, it’s his explosion number that is truly disappointing - an optimistic 57!  70 or higher is the expected range for an ‘elite level’ pass rush specialist.  I’ve felt all along TB is a solid backup / rotational guy at best.  I maintain that feeling, but hold hope for better.

{Explosion number is Vertical jump + bench reps+ broad jump}

This is the perfect example of grasping at straws.  You need a pass rusher in the worst way so you take a run at a potential fit but it's showing signs of running it's course.  Now today we have the Raiders listening to trade overtures for Mack who undoubtedly would solve our ER issues for years to come.   Do you make a trade and solve your biggest need or do you stand pat and rely on the draft?   Chris, we know, is all about the draft.  So he will probably let this opportunity go by.  Too bad.  We all make mistakes.  This might be another one of Chris's.

What is his contract situation?  Would he like to play in Indy?  Do we trade away high draft picks for a short term rental; if he doesn’t want to sign a long term deal with the Colts?

I have a hunch Mack will miss the first 7 Raider games, then show up week 8 on his current contract and finish the season. (Get that year of service in to finish contract).  But if we trade for him and the price isn’t rediculously high, then all is well and good too.

I think heaping on Basham the expectation that he was/is supposed to be The Man for our pass rush is too much expectation.  He was a small school guy who set the sack record for his school, and performed exceptionally well at the Senior Bowl.  Does that make him a top grade talent?  No.  He was drafted in the 3rd round, 80th overall.  That's where you draft somebody who shows ability and potential, but didn't dominate division 1.

He's got some game, but he still needs to prove he can play at this level.  This is only year two.  Let's not throw him on the trash heap just yet.

Now you know that any player that is signed has to be an all pro or they are a bust. It don't matter is they are a rookie or if they have had injury. We don't have time to develop any players. They play now or they need out of here.  :sarcasm:

If a player cannot beat 3rd string players, he has no business being on an NFL roster. Ballard needs to admit his blunder, and cut bait. Roster is already too thin to keep bad players

It's his first year at his more natural position with his hand in the dirt. He needs to develop a counter move but that's why he was there at 80. If he was a finished product he'd go top 15. A lot of people don't understand the value of pass rushers or much else about the game

Basham is explosive off the line and missed out on a few sacks, but I think he needs to be stronger if he wants to succeed in the NFL.

I would like to see him bull rush and use his hands more in order to try to get past his guy. The potential is there.

He mainly just needs more savvy and learn to be a technician.  I think he's got the get off and the strength.
