Colts Vs Rams Hopes/predictions (Merge)

Walden had 6 sacks last year, Its not there first job but its really not either outside linebackers first job, Both will rush on 3rd down and sometimes the rush backer will rush on passing down and sometimes both will

The Colts list the weakside back, NOT as a weakside backer, but as a "rush" linebacker.

I think there's a pretty good chance that the first responsibility of the position called the "rush" linebacker is to rush the quarterback.

Both have to contain first, Obviously the rush linebackers going to be doing more rushing, But if he cant contain first then that pretty much negates the rushing unless in obvious passing situations. If you have a rush linebacker just rushing upfield down after down that will get predictable and easy to spot and then it just becomes run through the gaping hole all over again

I don't think you are going to see a lot of that in the pre-season.  Walden got his mostly on blitzes and the Colts aren't going to show much of those in the pre-season.  I also think in situations like that this year you will see some combo of Cole, Mathis, and Newsome come in specifically to rush the passer on those downs.  I am not saying Werner can't get any sacks but if he wasn't doing it when that's what they were asking him to do I don't think you are going to see him start doing it now.  He might get one here or there but his value is going to be stopping the run and playing coverage in the flat.

Another typical Colt preseason game tomorrow, lot's of confusion, standing around, penalties, and complete ineffectiveness after the starters leave the game. It's been a recurring theme these past 20 years, but so what, come January we are still playing. I want to see Sylvestre get more reps early like he did last week against the Bears, he has been impressive. What's the panick over the o line about? Robinson has looked good as has Gore in his 2 carries. The defense, when the guys who will make the team have been on the field, has been good. Just like the past 20 years though, we need to tighten up that pass defense. I would also like to see Hilton, Johnson, Moncreif, and Dorsett all on the field together. That could be easily accomplished by keeping Fleener on the bench more. Go Colts, let's break tradition and win this one!

I sure hope our running game is up to the task as I do not want Luck dropping back that many times against that talented Rams D-Line in the preseason. I also hope that Mewhort bounces back and has a good game against Chris Long as that will be another good challenge for him to get ready for this season. Talk about a baptism by fire during his position change McPhee now Long ouch.

Could serve as an indicator of how things will go against the bills week 1. Rams are just like the bills, they both have good defenses and suspect offenses. The offensive line is scaring me! Grigson needs to make a move for a lineman or luck is in trouble.

What do you want Grig's to do? You have your eye on someone you think we can grab after first cuts? You want a trade? What do you have in mind? Or do you just scare easy?

Luck doesn't seem scared neither do the boys in Vegas that have us as the favorites to come out of the AFC. If it's not the O Line than it is the D Line that is so scary. If not the D Line then it's the back end.

You do realize that there will be 88 players in uniform that will not have a uniform on come week 1? The best thing that can happen in this game is to get out of here without any injuries.  We are a good team one of the few that have a realistic shot to win a Super Bowl.

I guess if you need something to complain about the O Line is as good as anything. It's not like we have started the same group for the first 2 games and finally may make it to opening day with the guys we want in there. Yet you are so sure that is a bad thing without ever seeing what it looks like. How is that? How are you so sure that Luck is in so much trouble and that our O Line is going to suck without ever seeing them play a complete game together?

You call for change the only player that is starting in the same position as week 1 last year is Castonzo. I am going to assume you aren't scared by Anthony at LT. I hope that's not a stretch.

What if Lance Louis who I felt improved as the year went on last year after not playing since 2012 can hold down RG?

Everyone has been calling for Holmes at C since we grabbed him in the 3rd from USC. Well guess what he has almost made it to week 1.

Herremans signed in the off season how can you know how badly he sucks in our system already? I thought that's what everyone wanted FA's, not the right one?

Then there is Jack oh Jack last years 2nd round golden boy to this years whipping boy. He played did play 26 games at LT for Ohio St team captain his last year. You think it might be possible he just might be able to play RT for us.

You may be right. The Bills may tear Andrew to shreds by the end of the first quarter on Sept 13. I for one would like to see what our O Line looks like after spending a full training camp together that Sunday in Buffalo before I declare them a disaster.

1.    I hope Luck doesn't get killed.

2.    I hope our O-line doesn't get abused by the Rams D-line.

3.    I hope we can run block and pass block -- even at an average level.

4.    I hope our defense looks interested in playing and shows an interest in tackling.

5.    I hope we show a decent running game.

6.    I hope we show improved special teams.

7.    I hope Carter shows more if only to quiet the usual suspects who doubt anything and everything.

8.    Am I hoping for too much?      I sure hope not!         :peek:

This will be a good test for our first team offense. Rams have a legit defensive front. Can we protect Luck and run against them? Rams made Colts look foolish a couple of years ago. It will be interesting to see how we fare against them tonight. I like having this opponent for the dress rehearsal game. Should tell us ALOT.

I want to see:

  • Luck, Gore, Hilton & Johnson pulled from the game ASAP. They're ready and don't need the extra reps or hits.
  • Hasselbeck, Robinson, Dorsett, & Carter in those positions very early against the ones.
  • Whalen, Toure & Varga get meaningful reps.
  • Langford, Jones, Cole, Davis, Walden, Butler & Adams pulled from the game ASAP. They're also ready and don't need the extra reps or hits.
  • Kerr, Hughes, Pendleton, Quarles, Parry, Anderson, Okine, Herrera, Fields, Newsome, Sylvestre, Hodges, Patterson, Brown & Smith get meaningful minutes.
  • NO Injuries

I'm mostly interested in seeing what Parry and Anderson can do. They've both been great. Look to continue that. Also want to see how D'joun Smith looks. Not to mention the first team defense and offensive line. Look for Robinson to have another beast game. The dude has amazing lateral quickness and agility, which I think now a days is the most important part of being a solid Running Back (especially with our offensive line, you better have the ability to make guys miss  haha).

I think the game will go the same way it went with the Bears game. Solid first half with the starters, then the flood gates really open up in the second.

Final Score Rams take 31-20 (14-10 us at half time).

Not sure Parry looked so great vs the Bears

    • I just want to point out that Ballard again told us the truth in his pre-draft presser. His answer to the question of whether he has changed anything in his draft philosophy, pretty much explains the Latu pick in view of him being a bit of a departure from what he's usually done (i.e. super high level athleticism, some projection of what the player can be vs what he is now)     His answer pretty much explains the Latu pick "of course you look for unique talent, unique traits, ...character... but then also... on the flip side of that making sure that we are drafting not only the unique traits but also some substance with the tape"...    So yeah, I think this answer a very good explanation of that pick... "substance with the tape". Not that Latu is not athletic. He is, but his athleticism is not his selling point. The selling point is the substance - the technical refinement, the tape, the production.    With that said... I wonder if we will continue to see that on day 2 and day 3? Can we see one of the Ballard's lowest RAS drafts?
    • From @nsurg   "So he had a cervical fusion... this is a surgery I do frequently.  Once it heals the surgery is more or less the strongest part of the neck.  The biggest problems with a fusion in this context are:        (1) loss of nerve function prior to surgery may or may not recover after surgery, usually over the next 3-12 months (but his production after surgery implies no major concern on this)        (2) the patient will have somewhat accelerated wear/arthritis at non fused levels.  While this is a real concern, it will unfortunately be more of an issue for him later in life, after his NFL career.                 Peyton had this surgery as his final neck surgery before playing for the broncos, but his problem was number one above, he apparently never had the same arm strength as before.        Ahmad Bradshaw also had this same surgery in 2013, he already had I think 6 years of RB play prior to that.  His YPC held up but was utilized less, but this may mirror more a tapering RB career.                 I'm not personally worried about the medical status of this player, but I have no idea the actual details obviously.  I will say that very few surgeons would be eager to clear the player to play afterwards, mostly for the stupid liability things in medicine.                 I think it's fair to say we got a really nice pick here for value."   https://forums.colts.com/topic/76891-colts-select-laiatu-latu-edge-ucla/?do=findComment&comment=2646941
    • I could see a Ryan Flournoy on day 3. He's one of those RAS guys.
    • I guess this means Chris has to be a regular on Rich Eisen's show now LMAO. He did say if Rich could get 6 QBs taken before us he would be a regular guest!
