Even if that was Grigson's intention, why? We have to protect Luck first and foremost. This is a passing league. Adrian Peterson has been the best running back in some time, and how much success has he brought to the Vikings? Very little sans the time that Favre was there.

Running is nice and we should be able to do it, but it's overrated once you get to a certain point, especially with a top 5 QB. And when our blocking inefficiencies get said QB hurt, you really have quite a mess to clean up.

To your point on Polian, blame the NCAA. College offenses are such gimmicks anymore that these guys are coming into the league entirely unprepared to play big boy football. It doesn't help that for whatever reason teams don't seem to be able to develop them properly, be it in practice or in games.

It's really stark in contrast when I think back in time 10 years at the general state of offensive lines as a whole in the NFL and today.

i don't have an answer as for why I just think it's what he has done. I am also not saying I think it was the right approach or the approach I would have taken.

I agree on the cause of Polian's point. I was just pointing out the fact the Colts are ranked 15th in pass protection this year supports Polian's idea as some rejected his idea when it was brought up the first time.

I still see it as playcalling.  Luck is waiting for a ton of deep routes to develop, and constantly getting blasted.  Most of those times I seldom see anyone in the flat or 5 yards up field.  Our pass plays are simply looking for it to open up deep.  And we're putting ourselves in predictable situations for the defense.

2-3 step drops and get the ball out.  If we start doing that and getting any sort of gains on those plays, we'll take a TON of pressure off of Luck.

And the thing is, it's going to start affecting the NFL across the board at all non kicking positions IMO.

The NFL really needs to work on coming up with ways to combat the issue, but I don't think they really see it yet. A developmental league would be nice, but it is likely just too taxing to ever happen. I just don't like the way things are headed. I am not a college football fan at all, but I see the massive effect it is having on the NFL and I can't help but feel that within the next 10 years we're going to see a heavy college football style come to the NFL.

i think a development league would be too expensive but I think they could maybe do something with the practice squad rules. Maybe lossen the rules on how long a guy can stay on one and maybe give team an extra protected spot (meaning another team can't sign him) specifically for olinemen. That would help teams develop linemen.

I like another "subtle" shot a Grigson here

"When asked which game Luck injured his shoulder, Pagano replied, "pick one."

It was which play, not game. Pagano was explicit that it happened against Tennessee. So he replied, pick one (play).

Obviously this is what he has to say or the Colts would be subject to a fine due to not reporting injury. That said, let's be sure to hold ourselves accountable to what Pagano actually said.

I think roster expansion/practice squad rules are the way to go as well. Since you get 7 draft picks by default, I'd say allow 7 exclusive spots. Make it so that a player cannot be kept on the PS beyond his first two years in the league. Likewise, expanding the active roster would help as well.

But even then there's still problems. Rookie wages are way better than they used to be, but you're still paying enough to your top 3-4 picks that not playing them in the name of letting them develop doesn't make very good financial sense. It's definitely a tough situation. I just see that ice getting thinner the farther we skate on it.

My apologies I was basing it on the article.  I didn't hear Pagano speak myself.

I've followed the company line and trusted the regime's moves, but I'm officially off their wagon.

You literally have one major important job, protect #12.

You're failing at that. Jim, do the right thing and pay whatever it takes in salary and or buyouts of contracts of the current best out there and build this thing the right way. We're good cap wise going forward so a competent GM could make things work quickly, we have the most important piece, a QB.

Sorry for the rant, but I don't want this to become a habit (#12 being constantly hurt). Also, a shoulder isn't just a minor thing when talking QB's.

This is actually a time I hope Jim overreact's at seasons end.

Sorry, rant over..

This won't be a popular post,  but that's OK.....     but this needs to be said.

The Colts could've invested 5 first round draft picks on the OL and Andrew Luck STILL could get hurt.

Stuff happens.

It's the nature of the position.    Quarterbacks get hurt.    Doubt there's ever been one in the history of the game that didn't get hurt to one extent or another.

The NFL is a violent game.    Players and especially quarterbacks get hurt.    That's why the NFL has spent the last 15-20 years trying to come up with rules to protect the QB better.

I'm not saying Girgson is guilt free here.   This is not a Get Out Of Jail Free card.

This is just some needed perspective for the torches and pitch forks crowd........      Slow your roll.......

Just sayin......

Patriot message board on this topic is just disgusting... Can't believe people can be so disrespectful even during injury. Pathetic.

Are you shocked?  Colts fans were laughing hysterically when Brady got his knee ripped to shreds.  In general sports fans are pyschos when it comes to their team and enemy teams.

Well lets hope we have a better time protecting him against the Jags because taking a pounding again like he did against the Titans sure will not help.

Of course Luck could tear his ACL just jogging off the field after a TD, but it is frustrating seeing him hurt and the OL play so poorly.

Don't venture off to the dark side....All forums aren't universally fan friendly, like ours :)

Yep... I usually don't venture too far. Definitely not going back. It's amazing how different each fan base is on their own forums. Sometimes it's quite sickening to read.

I really wouldn't call it an "injury" per se. He's a NFL football player and his shoulder hurts a little, as a result he's been limited in 1 practice, thus far. It only seems to be uncommon because Luck hasn't ever been limited in practice before, but in reality it happens all the time.

Yes and no, he's injured and it seems to be affecting his play. Luck will never admit it, obviously. It's not an extreme injury but it's worth mentioning because I do think it's affecting him. Fans of other teams that we are playing in the future will think "him playing injured" is just an excuse because the Colts are soft, yada yada. So I hope he's back to 100% very soon.

He's banged up, but they said it's not from any play previous to the Tennessee game, and he's not going to miss time. So it seems that it happened in the game Sunday, BEFORE the 4th quarter comeback. So if that's how Luck plays when he's hurting a little, then I'm not as worried as a lot of people seem to be. And assuming he gets through Sunday and next Thursday without getting further banged up (fingers crossed), he'll have 10 days to recover before the New England game.

If I were Andrew Luck, I would bolt from Indianapolis as soon as my contract expires. He has an incompetent GM that refuses to get good players to block for him. Our GM makes Luck's job twice as hard as it needs to be. Instead of focusing on the offensive line, our GM trades first round picks for terrible running backs.

    • This is mainly in reference to DD's "past points of view" countering other fans' point of view that Ballard may not have thought Bernard Raimann would have been where he was picked but he should still get credit for taking the opportunity at BPA when it presented itself. By virtue of that, when the pick turns out to be better than expected, he should get credit because he could have still passed on him, just like with Adonai Mitchell (assuming he turns good). But in DD's book, he just "lucked into it" when all he did was recognize the value like GMs are supposed to do.    However, that is something that other GMs before that pick didn't see the same way with AD. So, if AD turns out good, it is again Ballard lucking himself into it, just preparing myself for that future argument 😉
    • Open Roster spots - 12(from my roster lock post)       Positional Battle QB3:(1 open spot) Ehlinger Slovis  Bean -------------------------------------------- Positional Battle RB3:(1 open spot) Sermon  Goodson Pennix  Scott Vet FA?   Possible FA Additions: Akers Elliott  Cook Hunt Penny -------------------------------------------------------------------- Roster Battle WR6:(might not keep 6?) Dulin(favorite if we keep 6) Montgomery  Winfree White Cleveland  Fernea Bynum ---------------------------------------- Roster Battle TE4:(1 open spot) Alie-Cox  Granson Murray Tomlinson  ------------------------------------------------ Positional Battle OL9/10:(1-2 open spots) Witt Sills Hambright  Kidd Tucker Pinter French  Anderson  --------------------------------------------------- Positional Battle DL9/10:(1-2 open spots) Leo Land Avery Adebawore  Bryan  Laulu  Johnson  Coe  ---------------------------------------- Position Battle LB5/6:(1-2 open spots) Stuard McGrone Olubi Anderson  Ajiake Young  -------------------------------------------- Position Battles CB4:(1 open spot) Speed Baker Jr Abraham  Vet FA?   Position Battles NB2:(1 open spot) Lammons Abraham    Possible FA Additions: Nelson  Gilmore Witherspoon  Howard Adoree Jackson JC Jackson  Levi Wallace ----------------------------------------------- Position Battle FS1/2:(2 open spots) Thomas Scott Simpson  Vet FA?   Position Battle S4:(included with players above) Denbow   Possible FA Additions: Simmons  Diggs  Eddie Jackson  Hyde         What's your 12?   Here is list of my locks.   I'll make my list in a little bit. Think it will play out something like this. Positional groups #"s.   QB3 - 1 RB3 - 1 WR6 - 1 TE4 - 1 OL9/10 - 1 DL9/10 - 1 LB5/6 - 1 CB4 - 1 NB2 - 1 S3/4 - 2   That leaves 1 roster spot for and 2nd OL,DL,LB, only one positional group.
    • Mitchell is going to need watching after by grown-ups. He had a low level response to where he was drafted. And Ballard passing on him tells me AD has issues and they are known in the community.   I believe he will have great support from teammates and coaches so hopefully his friends and family help him do things right.  Watching his moves taking guys deep looks very mature and Exciting. Oh ya!
    • That wasn't exactly my point.  I think if he was targeting AM, he would have simply picked him at 46.    IMO, he traded down because CAR offered and he wasn't stuck on any one player on his board, not because it was a strategy to get AM plus another pick, which is what I think you are saying.  When he says that "nobody knows how this stuff plays out", I don't think he is saying "I knew how it was going to play out from pick 46 to 52, and I knew nobody was going to snipe us for AM, so I wanted to get another pick too."     I think he saw AM was clearly the highest BPA on his board when they were on the clock....maybe a few picks ahead like around the time pick 50 was on the clock.   I think if he was flat out targeting AM around the time, say, when pick 43 was on the clock, he would have just picked him at 46, and not gambled if he really wanted AM then.   That's how I interpret his quote.
