Yes, they have the young kids but also depended a lot on McLeod who they did not re-sign.  They had three and needed a fourth.

Denrow made the team before getting hurt I believe

ESPN  Scott got better every year. Special teams ace.

“Scott matches up well with tight ends and bigger slot receivers. He tracks the ball and flashes the ability to pluck it out of the air. He's effective playing close to the line of scrimmage, closes well filing the alley and chases with good effort, but he's an inconsistent finisher who missed too many tackles in 2022. Scott has the potential to develop into a valuable special teams' contributor. --“ Steve Muench

Mike Renner says Scott is one of the few safeties that’s a quality single high type.
Has range sideline to sideline

He likes the pick and was surprised he lasted this long.

Says in time he could start alongside Nick Cross.

You didn’t listen to Ballard last night.   He said they’ll be taking the best player available even if it’s NOT a need.   Some players are too good to pass up.

Scott is a good 5th round pick.

From the Athletic:

As one of the most athletic safeties in the draft, Scott wowed evaluators at the combine with the best times in the shuttle and three-cone in his position group. He also ran a 4.45 in the 40 and put up 22 bench-press reps at 225 pounds.

In his last two years at Cal, Scott had 12 passes defensed with six interceptions, three forced fumbles and 207 tackles. A tough hitter, Scott was a team captain and will find a way to become an asset for a team right away, probably on special teams. At Cal, Scott logged 661 special teams snaps.

Doesn't sound like just a special teams guy to me. Looks like a potential starter.

The Colts really have a type. Scott is a rangy, dynamic athlete who has a case as the best pure free safety in the class. Super active but at times overzealous as a tackler which leads to misses. Awesome in coverage. True playmaker. (Chris Trapasso)

He could be and I am sure the Colts hope he can push to be but he was a special teams mvp in college.

Baffles?  That they used a late 5th rounder on an area where they clearly need depth?

Good to hear.  I think we need a true free safety.

Depth was needed for sure. Mcloud isn’t returning. Outside of him it’s just Blackmon , Thomas and Cross. I’ve read Scott was a really good gunner on STs as well.

Blackmon in 22

Completion %  84.6

Passer rating 138

Missed tackle % 15.3.  3 year avg. 14

 We don't want this.

Dane Brugler scouting report on Scott from The Beast(Draft guide): BTW it's worth buying a subscription to the Athletic only for this Draft Guide. It's probably the most detailed publicly available draft guide out there...

11. DANIEL SCOTT | California 6007 | 208 lbs. | 6SR Pasadena, Calif. (St. Francis) 10/26/1998 (age 24.50) #32

BACKGROUND: Daniel Scott, who has an older brother, grew up outside of Los Angeles and participated in multiple sports, including AAU basketball and surfing. He originally played flag football before starting tackle football in fifth grade. Scott attended St. Francis High School, a Catholic all-boys school, where he was a three-year letterman and played on both sides of the ball as a safety and wide receiver – he wanted to be Wes Welker. As a junior, he accounted for 47 tackles and two interceptions on defense, adding 32 receptions for 567 yards and four touchdowns on offense. Scott produced a banner senior season and was named league defensive player of the year, all-area player of the year and first team all-division. A captain in his final season, he finished with 70 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and five interceptions and also led the team in receiving with 41 catches for 688 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding one rushing touchdown and one punt return touchdown. Scott also played point guard on the basketball team and lettered in baseball.

A three-star recruit, Scott was the No. 110 athlete in the 2017 class and the No. 154 recruit in California. With no Division I scholarship offers midway through his senior season, his recruitment was a slow burn. Scott eventually picked up offers from Fresno State and Hawaii and was ready to commit to the Bulldogs. However, California defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander attended one of his basketball games and extended a late offer that Scott accepted. He was part of Justin Wilcox’s first signing class at Cal. He took advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted because of the pandemic and returned to Berkley for his sixth season in 2022. His father (Duane) played college football and had several NFL tryouts before medically retiring because of his knee. Scott graduated with his degree in sociology (May 2021) and earned a graduate certificate in business administration (December 2021). He accepted his invitation to the 2023 Senior Bowl

STRENGTHS: Good-sized athlete with attractive measurables … fluid and fast on the field; testing data confirmed athleticism … rangy backend skills with the field vision to digest multiple routes and maintain spacing … locates and judges the flight of the ball with go-and-get-it skills … led the team in interceptions as both a junior and senior … Cal coaches trusted him as a run defender … quick trigger once he sinks to spring-and-sting ball carriers … above-average blitzing skills because of his speed and timing (see 2022 UNLV tape) … has a ton of special teams experience (11 tackles and 661 snaps) and earned the team’s special teams MVP award in 2019 … voted a team captain … intangibles give him an edge. WEAKNESSES: Will open gate prematurely and lose leverage … can be stemmed out of position by body fakes … off-man coverage responsibilities are not a strong suit … physical, strong run defender, but has unreliable tendencies as an open-field tackler … inconsistent breakdown mechanics create wild angles (had multiple missed tackles on almost every 2022 tape studied) … needs to be more disciplined in response to play action … doesn’t have ideal length or shed strength to easily detach from blockers … will turn 25 during NFL rookie season.

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at California, Scott was a rotational safety in head coach Justin Wilcox’s zone-matching defense. He posted strong production in his two seasons as a starter and turned heads with his testing at the combine – his 6.75 three-cone and 4.17 short shuttle were No. 1 among safeties at the combine. A staple of Wilcox’s scheme is versatility, and Scott embodied that with his range and ball-tracking skills to make plays in the deep third of the field while also working in the box as a run defender and blitzer. He is quick to react but was caught out of position too often and allowed a lot of completions on his watch (Caleb Williams had a productive night against him on the 2022 USC tape). Overall, Scott has better traits than tape and needs to become more buttoned up in several areas, but NFL teams are always searching for rangy, quick-footed safeties with his set of skills. His versatility on defense and special teams will be an attractive selling point on draft day.

GRADE: 4th-5th Round

Colts are going to be challenged in defending TEs with Okereke gone, who if I remember gave us timely pass breakups. I didn’t see any LB drafted. So I anticipate more 3 safety looks with both Scott and Jaylon Jones used as a safety on passing downs to defend TEs, IMO, as time goes on.

Micah Hyde started as such a specialist for the Packers before he came to the Bills.

Scott looks like a real nice pick.  Safeties are sort of like RB in that they can be found well into most drafts and teams hit on them every year even late.  Reason for this is part supply & demand, where teams know they're numerous and available, and part the fact that safeties are greatly affected by how DCs call their defense.  So there's a lot of examples of guys who slip through the cracks and end up with excellent careers even if picked late.

Also safeties can start quickly and be felt out there if they're utilized to their strengths.  So I would guess Scott is expected to compete for a starting role.  I'd be surprised if he didn't he looks like a quality player to me.
