Jets sign Revis (merge / update)

I'm not buying any leaked stories until he signs somewhere. For all we know, the Jets could be trying to leak it out there that they aren't willing to break the bank in the hope that the Pats will try to take advantage with a low-ball offer that they would then blow away. That said, Revis' professed desire to return to the Jets sounds like a bit of a negotiating ploy on his end too. For one thing, Rex was the coach when he was there and by all accounts he was the attraction for players. Revis' dealings with the team during negotiations was kind of acrimonious...so it's hard for me to believe that a Jets team with the same ownership and a new coach is leading to him "longing for the good ole days" in New York.

Yes, I think Revis is using the Jets to pump up Pats offer and that is smart. I do question how legit NY's interest is in him now and how much if at all he really wants to go there with no Rex. We should find out soon ...

I put no act of utter stupidity beyond Woody Johnson, and that includes throwing preposterous money at a guy who would likely not even see a playoff game for the duration of his contract. That's the risk the Pats are running if 4PM comes and goes with no deal. I do think Revis will stay for less money, but I can't rule out the Jets throwing so much money at him that he HAS to leave, and all these reports coming out of New York that suggest the Jets aren't planning to go big are making me nervous...that sounds like a bait and switch tactic. Why would they put it out there that they aren't willing to do what it will likely take to get him? Either that or there is a deal in place with the Pats already and the Jets are now starting to spin the "we didn't think it was wise for us at this point" propaganda.

This is a bit of a catch 22. I believe the Pats were not over the cap but with Revis' option on the books, it would make it difficult for them to make any moves in FA. Also, as I said before, they want to sign Revis and not hold him hostage during FA should he decide he wants to play elsewhere.

Naaa  ... I think you're wrong again. I'm looking at their present cap situation and even if you take the McCourtney signing off the books , they would still be at 133 mill as we speak. Add 20 mill for Revis and they are over .. even with the extra money they rolled over. I think they "could" have done it if they chose to do that. Extend Solder , cut Mayo, and probably wait on DM.

Sure, you are probably right then. I admit that I am no cap wizard. As GoPats would say, it gives me an ice cream headache. lol.

Ehhh.. really not an issue as that second year was only put in to prevent any possible franchise tag. Only a few silly talking heads thought it was possible the Pats used it. This is pretty much where NE needed to be at this point in time. Cut Willie and sign D.M. and then work on the Revis deal.

Revis' second year was put in there to give NE at least some leverage if they wanted to keep him around. Until they officially decline the offer, Revis isn't technically allowed to speak to other teams.

As of yesterday, reports were saying that the Patriots hadn't even talked actual dollars with Revis yet. This is typical of their style; they don't want a player taking their offer and "shopping it" to other teams. So basically they say, "Go out there, talk to whoever you want to talk to, see how you do, and then check back in with us before you make any moves." My understanding is that this is exactly how it went down with McCourty.

Revis is a bit different because, in theory, he shouldn't have spoken to anyone yet. Let's not be naive though. So it comes down to today... the Patriots decline his option, at which point NY can swoop in. They make their offer and if it's not something NE can get close enough to, bam, he's gone. If they can match (doubtful) or get fairly close (possible) then he stays.

We'll find out soon enough. Even if there's a mystery team out there my bet is that Revis will be under contract with someone this time tomorrow.

Not to mention it allowed them to spread the year 1 money out.  Still going to be a 5m cap hit on Revis no matter what the Pats do.

Glad to see he wont be on the Pats. They now have lost their 2 starting CBs and if Browner signs elsewhere they will be in trouble there. The draft isn't great at CB this year.

But they got a $10 million dollar safety, who can cover three WRs, so I hear.

    • Toppin was toying with Knicks. That Dunk he had when he went between the legs and wind milled it to put us up 20 in Game 7 was the exclamation point. I look at 3 of the 4 Boston games and the difference to me was their experience. They have been deep in the playoffs many years and just know how to close games better than us. As of now in the East we are a top 4 team at least, Boston, NY, and Milwaukee are the other 3. We were fortunate that Giannis was out for the Bucks.
    • Lol, Hart is pretty funny! Rib busting humor!🤣
    • I feel the same.  The Colts return a defensive line that had 4 players with 8 or more sacks and hopefully a full season from Grover, just say no Grove...lol.  Then the additions of Latu, Davis, and re-sign of Smith...ahhh the possibilities.
    • I’m trying to learn more about the NBA landscape. Players seem to move teams frequently bc chemistry is huge in basketball. I thought Toppin was an awesome contributor during the playoffs. I’m seeing is a restricted free agent so it really depends how much other teams are willing to offer. I think they keep him if no one goes much higher than his 7.7m qualifying offer.    A few articles have suggested trading Walker and picks while his value is high for another win now piece. I can see the logic in this, especially if they like Mathurin and signing Siakam to a max contract.   Pacers typically aren’t a free agent destination so if they can improve their top 7 and make real push into contender territory, they have some decisions to make.
