I am not a Pep fan but really you'd want your first HC job in Oakland that seems to me like career suicide. I would wait for a better gig

It's a rough call.  A head coaching gig even for 1 season is change your life money.  I think most coordinators in the NFL earn 6 figures, but they arn't making the 7 figures that the head coaches make.

So in that sense it's hard to turn it down.

On the other hand, they are perennially bad and they don't give their HC very long to try and build something before they just dump him for another one.  So you're chances of making it there are pretty low.

Although word is that Derek Carr can play, so they may be on their way up.  And going 8 - 8 there would automatically make you in line for coach of the year honors.  That said I would still agree the chances of having any kind of success there are pretty low.

Personally, I would like to keep Pep around. With a healthy OLine and decent RB play we were leading the league in total offense. Luck finished first in TD passes. I understand the gripe with some coaching decisions, but to me that's mostly personnel decisions and I'm not sure if that really falls on Pep. He's done a hell of a job, IMO. However, should he decide to take a HC gig no one could blame him.

Hopefully Chud would be willing to step in at OC. If that's the case then props to Pagano for bringing him in as that should work wonders for the transition. Maybe he knows of a decent OLine coach to work with?

Raiders meeting their Rooney rule obligations?

Not meaning to sound racist, but remember when Caldwell was interviewed for every open job? He was like the go to Rooney requirement guy.

I wonder if Pep inherited that title? Has he really done enough in the NFL to be considered for a HC job?

No, he hasn't.  And, if anything, the rule is racist, not you. He's likely not considered to be a serious candidate at this point.  But you never know, he may knock the interview out of the park or more qualified candidates may not really be interested.

Raiders also requested to interview Todd Bowles, so I actaully believe they're interested in him.

I think Bowles has a longer and better NFL resume than does Pep, but I'm not certain about that.  Bowles has done well with the AZ defense, and one could argue that Pep's success has been aided by Luck.  Perhaps the Raiders will also consider Pep for OC If he wants to get back to the bay area.

I love how people say stupid stuff like this.  Oakland has been bad, that goes without saying.  But with Al Davis gone, the franchise has gotten a bit more level headed in the front office.  They have multiple cornerstones on both sides of the ball in Mack and Carr.  They have some veteran presence, and are often a tough team for some to compete with.

That said, their previous head coach was simply not getting it done.  They had some good games with Sparano leading the pack, but I suspect the GM wants to hand select his guy if he's going to be on a short leash himself.  And if they were to hire Pep, who better to develop Carr than the guy who had Luck.  If offered the job, I bet Pep takes it in a heart beat.

I have to ask - how on earth do you know if the Raiders consider him a serious candidate or not?

Completely agree.  There are only 32 of these jobs in the world.  I don't blame or ridicule anyone who would take this job.  The same thing was said about Arians a couple years ago - he would never leave Indy and the dream job of being Luck's OC for the lowly Cardinals.  Look how that has turned out.  Secondly I am sure the way NFL head coach types are wired, they have to believe they are capable of righting the ship - again see Arians.

I have to say, anyone is a serious candidate if you are asking permission to talk to them.  Some teams simply know exactly who they want based on past experiences.  Others may be combing the fields and talking to guys to see who has the right personality to fit what they want their organization to do.

But to me, if you are asking for permission to interview a guy, he's a serious candidate, not matter how many guys they interview.  All one need do is say the right things and present the right attitude and they can be the guy they hire.

I am sure he is.  I was quoting someone who thinks he is not a serious candidate which is nonsense.

I don't.  Its why I said "likely".  His resume is not really that extensive is it?  I don't know...I've only known about him in the past three years in the chatter about Luck and Stanford.  Its not like he's Bruce Arians or Todd Haley and has had success with different teams and QBs.

My comment was in response to the Rooney rule, which is about interviewing (not hiring) minorities (black) for HC positions.  Its also possible that the Raiders don't even consider him a good OC, let alone HC, but they are simply interviewing him because he's black and the rule requires it.  But I don't think that's likely.

JMO.

I'm encouraged that if he does leave, the Colts have provided for some consistency with the hiring of Chud.

He may not be Bruce Arians but this is the Oakland Raiders we are talking about here. Not much of a shocker that they would ask anyone.

Sorry - but I don't think the word likely helps your argument.

They are taking the time to interview him or at least ask permission to do so.  The only logical conclusion is that they are interested enough to talk with him and by definition a serious candidate - black, white, yellow or red.

Further, he has both college and pro experience before coming to Indy and is highly thought of around the league.  This is not a courtesy thing.

Can you please let me know how this front office has gotten more level headed? Didn't they just fire their coach mid-way through the season?  The only possible cornerstone I see is Mack, Carr while decent for a rookie needs alot of work to become a cornerstone of the franchise.  I don't mean to blast you but I live in SoCal and hear all about it from Raiders fans/radio, etc.... and they aren't as optimistic as you lol

I agree, getting any of the 32 head coaching jobs is a dream come true to some, but stop polishing a turd.  If Pep or Bowles or whoever get the job, they will be cutting their teeth with a angry looking Reggie McKenzie and a befuddled looking Mark Davis standing over them questioning every move.

In regards to Pep not having a big name or a long standing resume like Bruce and others, sometimes these teams want to get ahead of the popularity curve. If they view a guy as a possible up and comer, why not take the leap and try to get the next best offensive mind to run your team if they determine he could be a good manager of multiple phases of the game as opposed to just the OC spot. Many HC spots have come from new coordinators with little resume but high with potential. Not all these guys work out but neither do all the big name guys. See Mike Shannahan for that theory.

I am not crazy about Pep but I also am not on the fire him bandwagon either. I think he (or the group) puts some pretty innovative plays together a couple times a game. The playoffs will tell if he is able to pull film, pull out those plays from each game and install those into the proper areas of the game for them to succeed. I haven't been overly crazy about his scripting of play calls to start the first few series, or the first half at times but he has had some games where he pulled off some nice game plans.

Is all of this enough to move him into contention for a HC spot yet, maybe with a team like the Raiders but I highly doubt with an already built team like the 9ers. I guess we will see.

    • I've compiled a wardrobe of thoughts, memoirs, and overall emotional debris that is now collected and compounded into something comparable to a rubber band ball- find attached a memoir, a venting, a sigh of relief   ----------------The Colts' Quarterback Quest: A Comedy of Errors----------------   Dear Colts faithful, Let's talk about our journey to find a franchise quarterback. It's been a saga filled with twists, turns, and enough drama to rival a Shakespearean tragedy. After years of waiting and wondering, we finally drafted Anthony Richardson—a quarterback destined to lead us to glory, or so we thought.   But here's the kicker: Richardson might actually end up being a running back. Yes, you read that right. After all the hype, the scouting reports, and the draft day anticipation, we might have inadvertently picked up our next star ball carrier instead of our quarterback savior.   How did we get here, you ask? Well, it's a tale as old as time in Colts Nation. We waited patiently, year after year, for the right moment to strike. We passed on quarterbacks, we shuffled through coaching staffs, and we endured seasons of uncertainty. And just when it seemed like our patience would pay off, we found ourselves scratching our heads yet again.   Now, don't get me wrong. Richardson is undoubtedly talented. He's got speed, agility, and a knack for making plays. But isn't it just our luck that the quarterback we've been waiting for might end up excelling in a different position altogether?   It's almost poetic. The Colts, known for their meticulous planning and strategic moves, find themselves in a situation straight out of a sitcom plot. Are we destined to forever chase the elusive quarterback dream, only to stumble upon a hidden gem in the running back room?   As we ponder this twist of fate, let's remember to laugh through the tears, Colts Nation. After all, football is a game of surprises, and Richardson's unexpected role might just be the plot twist that leads us to unexpected glory. Or at least, that's what we'll keep telling ourselves until the next draft day dilemma.   Here's to hoping Richardson's arm is as strong as his legs, and that our next quarterback isn't hiding in plain sight on the depth chart.   Yours in bemusement, AKB
    • Let's take a moment to appreciate the unconventional journey our team has taken over the past decade. While some may see our .500 record and lack of divisional titles in over 10 years as setbacks, I see them as part of what makes being a Colts fan so special.   Our consistency in maintaining a balanced win-loss ratio shows our resilience and ability to compete year after year. It's not about fleeting glory—it's about building a foundation for sustained success. Chris Ballard's vision for long-term stability is commendable, keeping us competitive while others chase short-term gains.   The coaching changes? They're opportunities for growth and evolution. Each new coach brings fresh ideas and strategies, keeping our opponents guessing and our team adaptable. It's a testament to our commitment to finding the right fit and continually improving.   And let's talk about the draft. Ballard's approach may not always yield immediate superstars, but it's about finding players who fit our system and contribute over the long haul. It's like assembling a puzzle where every piece plays a crucial role in shaping our team's identity.   As for our divisional rivals, they may have their moments of glory, but we're forging our own path. We celebrate their successes because it fuels our determination to rise to the challenge and reclaim our place at the top.   So here's to embracing the Colts' unique journey, Colts Nation! Let's cherish every hard-fought win, every draft pick that adds depth to our roster, and every season that brings us closer to our ultimate goal.   Here's to the next chapter of Colts football and the unwavering passion of our fanbase! Go Colts!
