What's Up With Hakeem Nicks?

It was obvious to me in this game that they are phasing him out of the offense sad to say. Still don't think enough has been done to get him involved in the offense. When he is thrown the ball the passes are often way off for whatever reason. Then there is the separation issue. I still maintain that if you can get Griff Whalen open then you can get Nicks open. I do not think he has fallen off like that.

Yeah I feel like Avery and DHB were utilized a lot more.

I don't think he has the chemistry with Luck the other guys do. Also, passing to our backs and Tightends has been extremely successful this year which takes away chances from a guy like Nicks who was already seeing limited chances because of the chemistry with the other guys.

I agree, I believe he's just caught up in the numbers game right now. Having Allen playing like he is, and Pep using A LOT of two TE formations, he's just not getting the looks. I don't blame Nicks, and look for him to have a decent game or two here soon. Who knows, Reggie's role might hinder a little next week if his injury ends up being serious.

I just think there are way too many weapons for Luck to choose from, and Nicks is not standing out to well. Moncrief will take over more once he is fully acclimated... and that may be soon. The one year deal won't hurt that much he has made a few good catches when needed.

Maybe next year we can stop signing these random WRs that don't do anything.

Avery

DHB

Nicks.

We did draft Moncrief after all.

Overall Avery played well for us.....Hard for any wr's to play like studs when your QB completes 54.1%......Lucks rookie year....Actually I think the offense we run now would be a better fit for Avery

It also helps when you don't have have 12 drops on 112 targets too :P

Still he'll always be a small hero to me for the Lions game.

I saw on rotoworld that the Indystar reported that he was frustrated with his role here.http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nfl/5136/hakeem-nicks

"It's not a surprise. Nicks signed a one-year "prove it" deal with the Colts in March, but he's right where he belongs -- buried on the target totem pole behind stud playmaker T.Y. Hilton and third-down chain-mover Reggie Wayne. Nicks would do well not to complain publicly and then try to rehab his value in 2015."

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this coaching staff has no confidence in Nicks. Is it laziness on Nick's part? Find a way to utilize his size & catching radius. It reminds me of former GM Bill Polian who loved small guys with speed. You want godzilla targets you can see easily when the QB is being blitzed. Little, low center guys are hard to find under duress sometimes. I prefer giraffe targets in December myself.

How can get bring in a free agent skyscraper & willfully ignore him on the field? In snowy, rainy sloppy games tree trucks are easy to spot spell TDs in my book not little dwarfs Just Kidding!

I would say also that Nicks isn't relied upon to step up as much as Avery or DHB were, and that is reflected in the targets: Hicks is probably the fifth best pass catching option when we go to our 3 receiver set. I think as the year goes on he can get more comfortable in the offense, but I get the feeling this will be an unremarkable year and next year Moncrief will be moved into his position.

Being his first year trying to learn this new playbook may have something to

do with his productivity?

True, but Nicks has a SB ring so I don't this is a case of slow, playbook Chad Johnson like comprehension problems. Hakeem is smart enough to figure out what routes he should be running.

It's cool if we don't bring Nicks back to me next year...Just take advantage of his knowledge & frame while he is a member of the Colts squad. That's all I ask.

I may revere the NY Giants GM Jerry Reese & their scouting Dept. which drafted both Nicks & Bradshaw, but I can cut the cord if a player isn't being productive on the field. I just need to see Pep try to incorporate more schemes with him involved next month before I decide Nicks is done in the NFL or not.

Prove to me he still has something left in the tank or not next month Pagano. I can tell if an athlete is done in this league, but I need more game action 1st on Nicks before I reach that conclusion.

I will say to be fair here, I don't believe Moncrief played at all against the Texans while Nicks had a couple targets and catches in that game.  Although the Bengals game felt like Pep and Pagano phased Nicks out of the offense, maybe they were just coming back to Moncrief to make up for not playing him against the Texans.  Who knows?

Nicks is only 26......

Its not an age issue. Nicks is on a 1 year deal. We have T.Y Hilton who will be paid handsomely once his rookie deal is up. We also just used a high draft pick on Moncrief. Plus there's  Dwayne Allen who's rookie deal will be up soon too. There isn't enough room to give Nicks the kind of money he would be seeking (or would be available to him on the open market) were he to have a good season. And everyone knows it.

If the Colts (or Nicks) were serious, they would have signed him to a 1 year deal with a club option for year 2. That's not the case. No matter what happens he is only going to be here a year. That's why he is so upset. Nicks wanted to have a big year so he could command a big contract via FA. Not because he was going to be involved with any long term plans with the Colts.

If the Colts knew the RB/TE/WRs on this roster were this deep and talented, they likely never would have signed Nicks. But WR2 has been an issue since Luck's rookie year. Donnie Avery was terrible in 2012. In 2013, I was shocked at how bad DHB was. Its amazing to think he was a #1 pick just a few years ago. DHB can't even get on the field in Pittsburgh, where they are in desperate need for another WR to go with Brown.

What has happened is the TE position has really blossomed. Dwayne Allen has star potential. And both RBs (Bradshaw and Richardson) have been better than expected in the passing game, especially in the red zone. Throw in an emerging TY Hilton and some guy named Reggie Wayne, and even on an offense throwing more than 40 times a game, its tough to find room for Nicks. And as the season progresses, I think Moncrief has the skills to flourish.

At this point Nicks is here for depth. Having said this, with Wayne likely out for 2 weeks, this depth may be tested.

If Nicks proves it... I'm sure the Colts will re-sign him.

If he proves it I am all for it. I want the Colts to win. But hard salary caps are tough. You can't pay everyone the big deal. If it comes down to Ty or Hakeem, everyone here knows what direction the Colts will go. And so does Hakeem Nicks.
