What are some sayings about the NFL that you hate?

 

Here's a few of mine: 

 

"This guy's best attribute is his will to win." Like, no other player in the NFL has a will to win? This specific guy wants to win more than anyone else? 

 

"That's a great open field tackle" This one doesn't even make sense to me. What is a bad open field tackle?

 

“It depends on the spot.” When has it never depended on the spot?

Show me any QB who can throw a good, accurate pass that gets to the receiver on time when he has a big DT right in his face.  Put Vince Wilfork against Satele in front of any QB in the league and watch how well the QB does.

What's a bad open field tackle? How about on a 3rd and 5 play the QB throws a swing pass to the RB out of the backfield, RB 1v1 with a LB 3 yards from first down, RB drives 3 yards with the LB on his back for the first down.

That's just one example quickly off the top of my head. There are most definitely bad open field tackles.

That's just one example quickly off the top of my head. There are most definitely bad open field tackles.

 

Lol i guess that makes sense, but i was more referring to a type of play where guy stops a dude in the open field from reaching the endzone or gaining some type of serious yardage. Think that play where Landry completely whiffed on tackling Dwayne Bowe and Bethea had to walk him down at the 1.

 

I guess you are right technically correct tho. (The best kind of correct!)

He is a game changer. I swear chuck says this one every week about a quaterback, running back, receiver, or one of our new players we acquire, etc. Its the NFL yes every team has these play makers so it shouldnt come with any surprise, no?

The open field tackle thing has already been explained but this phrase is just a code word for "it's close".  If you get 5 yards past the first down line it doesn't really depend on the spot.  Because no reasonable official could put your spot 5 yards back behind you and say "4th down".  

 

But if you are brought down pretty much on the first down line it depends strongly on how the officials saw the play.  

 

As far as terms I hate is all the talk during the draft about arm strength or "big arm" or something like that.  Ever notice how some of guys who have the strongest arms in the league are average to above average QB's at best.  Your elite QB's arn't noted for having extremely strong arms in NFL terms.  At the very least it's never their best attribute.  

 

Now don't get me wrong, you need to have a certain level of arm strength to be successful in the NFL.  But it's just an over-rated attribute.  At some point having extra arm strength doesn't actually help you that much.  Peyton Manning has the weakest arm of his career but it didn't stop him from having a record breaking season.

 

Really they should just talk about if a player has enough arm strength that it does not limit him.  After that the returns on extra arm strength is diminishing.

Also saying "This kid is a winner"  All that means is he was on a good college team and his college team won a lot.  Granted he probably helped somewhat with that.  But that gets said about any QB that was on a good college team.  They call AJ McCarron a winner but then call him a game manager because he handed the ball off a lot.  

 

This goes a bit into us (and I don't exclude myself from this) treating wins as a QB stat.

"He has the IT factor" is a cliche, thrown around loosely. Used to describe anyone the media wants to build up and need to make a case for, including RG3.

 

"He is clutch" is a cliche, thrown around loosely anytime a QB makes a 4th qtr. comeback in a playoff game. Never mind he stunk it up in the first 3 quarters. :)

 

"He choked" is a cliche, thrown around loosely. This is the ultimate one, used purely on W-L record for a QB without analyzing whether the QB did enough to help the team to win or not.

Anytime a player or coach says " 110%".

If a player says 110% more then twice in an interview then I figure someone else did all his school work in highschool and college.

" Its like coach always says, you gotta give 110%. So i approach each game knowing that I need to give it 110%. We go through practice all week giving 110%, and when game time comes we gotta be out there giving 110%".

and the sad thing is, he probably wasn't joking.....he probably had naughty dreams about Brady that night too

The Raiders should have taught everyone by now that 2 of the most overrated player attributes are arm strength and 40 time.  I always thought Chad Pennington was a lot better than he was ever given credit for.  Noodle for an arm, but it was an extremely accurate noodle.

My cousins are Lions fans and one time they where telling me about how they get tired of all the praise Stafford gets for throwing a perfect spiral and it doesn't seem to matter to the people praising him as to if the ball was complete, incomplete or intercepted.

Mine are more general remarks that drive me nuts, not necessarily by commentators or players.

 

"Over/under"  Drives me nuts when people over/under something like "What's the over/under that [Player X] [insert extreme statline that is usually intended to come across as an insult."

 

Commending a huge knockout hit that went for a 20 yard first down.

"__________ Just wins."  This went viral when Vince Young got drafted.  You saw it most often on the internet, but also by TV pundits.

 

You hear this sort of phrase uttered when a person is trying to argue that the player in question is good but lacks tangible evidence to prove this point.  As a last resort, they make an argument based on specious reasoning that because the player in questions arrival coincides with the success of their team, that player in question is the sole and only cause of that success.

 

The type of logical reasoning would also lead you to believe that your computer monitor protects you from tiger attacks, because you've never once been mauled while near your monitor.

 

Fortunately, players who "Just win" tend to only "Just win" for a season or two and then reality creeps in.

      Again….   McGinn didn’t do the damage to Mitchell.  The scouts did.     And there are columnists like McGinn at every major paper.  Their job is to gather info and report it, whether it’s popular or not.    Let me turn this around.  Hypothetically, a few years from now if Mitchell doesn’t pan out and he’s moody and difficult to deal with and he’s a bust, then the scouts will have been proven correct.  And people here will say McGinn’s column was spot on.   Another person who should’ve handled his business better is Mitchell himself.  He’s been living with this since he was roughly 16.   And scouts said he interviewed badly with them.   Even Mitchell admits it.     I don’t think this is as black and white as it seems to you.      To be clear…. I love Mitchell.  Glad we drafted him.  I’ve said several times that Ballard defending him draft night was smart and scored points with the kid.  Now he comes out and says that exact thing.  He appreciates that Ballard defended him so hard and he wants to pay the Colts and Ballard back by being the best player he can be.

      I’d say those teams that lost had worse defenses compared to the winners. That’s not to say that their defenses were bad, they just weren’t as clutch in the big moment.    To me, defense matters a whole lot when you need a stop or a momentum change.    Look at all of the star studded power offense teams of the last decade who were incapable of winning it all.

      Oops that’s my mistake. Yeah I completely missed that. My apologies.   But yeah he’s one I would keep an eye on for us next year. Him and Will Johnson. It’s a little early to be talking about what the Colts would do in the draft, but I would put money on this being the year Ballard takes a DB high. I could also see him go D-Line again. I love college football and watch as much of it as I can, but I’ll be paying attention to a lot of the guys you listed at those positions. Last season I watched a lot of the teams that had the elite receivers (Washington, Texas, LSU, FSU, etc…).   I’m also getting ready to fire my draft podcasts I listen to back up and look at summer scouting. I’ll come back for some discussions as I get info as I always enjoy talking prospects with you.

      The issue some may have is the kind of journalism where Bob McGinn created an article that affected a young man's career based solely upon anonymous sources.   I'm confident you will reply back referring to your experience as a journalist with some version of 'without anonymous sources, there would be no journalism'. I value reading your insight about how sports are covered and I don't disagree that anonymous sources can be important. Its fair for anonymous sources to give background about things they are not comfortable saying out loud.   However, I'll add that perhaps its also fair for Bob McGinn to use his anonymous sources to help him find the story and craft the story, but if nobody will put their name on it then Bob McGinn needs to dig deeper before he launches infotainment into the world. He can't take back the damage he did to AD Mitchell.

      So damn classy as always. I still rewatch their pandemic golf game from 2020. They just have awesome chemistry together. Hopefully they can get Tom on the Manningcast again for more hilarity.
