I think our next RB comes from this group....

Recommended Posts

First off,  I should say I don't think we're going to take one of the sexy RB's.      I don't see the Colts taking Fournette,  Cook,   McCaffrey,   Mixon,   Kamara,  Samuel (I see him as a RB,  others see a WR)  or Foreman.

I think our next RB comes from a group of the following:    (and not necessarily in the order I'm listing them)      I see the Colts taking a RB in rounds 3-5 with the most likely round being the 4th.

Samje Perine/Oklahoma:

Jeremy McNichols/Boise State:

Marlon Mack/South Florida:

Kareem Hunt/Toledo:

Brian Hill/Wyoming:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/brian-hill?id=2558112

Wayne Gallman/Clemson:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/wayne-gallman?id=2557952

James Connor/Pittsburgh:

DeAngelo Henderson/Coastal Carolina:

Jamaal Williams/BYU:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/jamaal-williams?id=2558204

If you have a favorite that I haven't listed,  I think we might show interest in them IF we draft a 2nd RB in this class,   or if we sign another after the draft like we did with Ferguson.      Otherwise,   I think one of these 9 is the potential heir apparent to Frank Gore,  unless we taking one of the talented backs in the 2018 class.

I'm really starting to like James conner more and more. Needs to be more consistent with his patience, but flashed it on occasion. He's a professional tackle breaker and with another year of full recovery he'll play much faster then he ran. If he could drop like 5 pounds he can be a serious talent and should be available in the late 4th.

Nice group, and any of them could work, but I'm not sure if there's a bell cow in the bunch.

Take a look at this guy's college stats and tell me how he fares against that bunch:

Over 1500 yds as a senior, about 1300 as a junior, averaging over 6 yds/carry each year.  Good receiver too.

Mountain West Conference.

5'10' 220, 4.5 in the 40.  122 inch broad jump.  28 reps on the bench.

His name is Robert Turbin.

I just want to point out that except for the top 4, it's a crap shoot that we'll find someone better than what we got.  All could fill in, and I know Gore isn't around much longer.  But we really need to hit on our RB for the future.  Not sure he's in that group.

I like Conner a lot. I hope the Colts are able to get this kid.

Hunt is the one I want the Colts to draft

I agree I like Hunt the most.  Mack has fumble issue that kind of scare me.  Hill has solid production but for less competition but can still translate well IMO.  Hunt has the potential in my eyes because he runs very well.  Good balance and can be illusive.

I won't be shocked if we take McCaffrey or Cook with our first pick.  Or if Fournette slides down and we take him.  If we go with Edge or CB in the first, I wouldn't be upset with Mixon on Friday.

After those guys, I think we can get one of the guys listed above as an UDFA.

I really like Aaron Jones. Being from small school, he hasn't gotten a lot of hype but I think the kid has enough talent to warrant a late round pick.

There are so many RB's it's possible I have him confused with a different player. I read somewhere a recent DUI was going to push him to the tail end of the draft or more likely an UDFA.

Just reading this thread just goes to show there are so many opinions that it's tough to tell who is going to be the "hit" and who will be the "miss".  I don't really have a favorite.  i just know the Colts need a young back who can take over for Gore next season.  I have no idea who that is or who it should be.  I just hope it's a "hit".  And I'll probably like it so long as it isn't in the 1st round.

Count me NOT a fan of Kareem Hunt or Alvin Kamara...I think both have bust potential written all over them....Of course this is my opinion but if you watch Hunt for instance he is constantly getting caught from behind....

One guy who I think is a semi sleeper is D'onte Foreman of Texas.   I know he's had a bit of fumbling issue but he's a Mack Truck and in the Red Zone is a beast.   Unlike most of the RB above he is also listed from what I've read as a solid pass blocking RB which we know is important in our system.    He reminds me of an MJD type of back body build if you watch his tape.

I also think if Joe Williams is serious about the NFL he could be a sleeper too.  He is fast fast fast and as IU can attest hard to tackle in the open field.

Call me crazy, but I'd like to have two new backs this year instead of Gore.

Gore will be fine, but we won't have that athleticism of a young back.

I think Jeremy Hill could be had for our 4th or 5th due to the Bengals being interested in one of the top picks this year. We could trade back on one of our third or 3 4th round picks(2 if we nab Ballard) and draft a RB in the 5th or 6th,

otherwise, draft Foreman in the 3rd or Conner in the 4th(doubt he is there, but only so many RB's can be taken) if he is there and hope they become our RB of the future.

Foreman's 40 time did NOT hurt him at all either.  I think there was some question as to his speed prior to that.  I actually have him as one of my options in Dr. T's mock draft contest.  I would not mind him in Colts blue.

I think Ballard said something about getting an RB almost anywhere in the draft and even after the draft or something.

So based on what he said I really doubt will be spending a day 1 pick on a RB.  Good chance we don't even spend a day 2 pick on one.

Really like Mack as well.   Definitely like Perine too, but I think he's close in style to Turbin so I'm not sure if we'd pick him up just for that reason.  If you add Perine then to me there really isn't much use for Turbin.  Turbin is faster than Perine though.  I could be wrong about my overall take on the issue, but it's how I feel.

That's the order for me

Gallman ain't a bad back either.  I had to force myself to sit down and watch some Gallman tape and it gave me a better impression of what I originally had on my mind.

Out of this list, my preferences would be, in order:

Kareem Hunt

Marlon Mack

Brian Hill

Those 3 guys have 3 down ability.  Hunt isn't the most dynamic of the group, but he's the most consistent if you ask me.  Mack and Hill have the higher ceiling perhaps, with Mack probably being the highest.

I'd add Elijah McGuire to the list as well.  Another with 3 down potential, but probably settles in as a 3rd down change of pace guy.

It's not needed in the sense that you "need" a good QB or a historical defense with at least an average QB to make a run at the super bowl.  That said, having a 3 down guy who can do it all out of the backfield surely helps more than an RBBC might.

My thing with gallman vs the rest especially Conner is the same thing I've stated on here before. We don't have a gallman type back on the roster. A one cut/balanced back. I think he could be a 3 down back too. I don't like him any earlier than the 4th though.

I am really hoping they draft Hunt. He would be a great value in the 3rd or 4th.

Kareem Hunt only fumbled one time in 856 college carries, carried a huge offensive load is a guy, and was a brilliant runner! He can find the hole and although not blazing speed, 4.5 is plenty fast. Give me Hunt anytime!

    • With all the young gunslingers in our division  you may be pretty happy with the Latu pick if he’s planting them in the ground!  IMO we need a boost at Edge. Paye just hasn’t lived up to expectations.
    • Bills are gonna draft, with first draft pick of day 2, either McConkey or Mitchell.   Maybe, they'll surprise and pick another WR but past few draft selections show that different teams have different WRs at the top order of their draft board.
    • Dane Brugler's profile on Latu in his draft guide:   3. LAIATU LATU | UCLA 6046 | 259 lbs. | 5SR Sacramento, Calif. (Jesuit) 12/31/2000 (age 23.32) #15   BACKGROUND: Laiatu (lay-AH-too) Latu (LAH-too), the oldest of four children (two boys and two girls), grew up in Sacramento. He was a do-everything athlete throughout childhood, playing baseball, basketball, football, soccer and rugby. Latu enrolled at Jesuit High School, a privat e Catholic school in the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael and played on the JV team as a 150-pound freshman. After adding weight and moving up to varsity as a sophomore, he flourished as a pass-rushing linebacker in the team’s 3-4 scheme. As a junior, Latu posted 65 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 12 sacks, leading the program to 10 wins and earning first team AllMetro honors. As a seniorin 2018, he recorded 94 tackles and 29.5 tackles for loss to earn first team All-State and All-League. Latu finished his varsity career with 178 tackles, 50.5 tackles for loss and 27 sacks, adding 356 receiving yards as a tight end and 476 punting yards on special teams. Latu also lettered in rugby (his main love) and led the program to national championships in 2017 and 2019. He considered playing professional rugby overseas after high school.   A four-star recruit, Latu was the No. 6 weakside defensive end in the 2019 recruiting class and the No. 20 recruit in California (No. 3 pass rusher in the state behind 2022 draft picks Kayvon Thibodeaux and Drake Jackson). He started getting noticed as a recruit during his junior year and picked up his first offer (Oregon State). Latu later added offers from Alabama, Notre Dame and Tennessee, but he wanted to stay on the West Coast. He had a final five of Ca l, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington and signed with the Huskies in December 2018. Latu was the No. 3 recruit in Washington’s 2019 class behind Puka Nacua and Trent McDuffie. After playing a reserve role as a true freshman, he suffered a serious neck injury during practice before the 2020 season and was forced to medically retire in the spring of 2021. He stayed close to the Huskies program as a student assistant during the 2021 season, and a year after his injury, he saw a specialist (the same doctor who performed Peyton Manning’s neck surgery) and was medically cleared. He played rugby during his rehab and was offered a contract by the professional Seattle Seawolves rugby team, but he didn’t want to give up on his football dream.   Looking for a fresh start, he entered the transfer portal in November 2021. Ikaika Malloe, whom Latu considers a “father figu re,” was his position coach at Washington and left for the UCLA coaching staff in December 2021. Malloe recommended Latu to coach Chip Kelly, and Latu joined the Bruins in January 2022. In April 2022, Latu was officially cleared and put the pads back on that summer for the first time in almost two years. His younger brother (Keleki) played tight end at California (2021-22) before transferring to Nevada for the 2023 season. Latu opted out of the 2023 bowl game and accepted his invitation to the 2024 Senior Bowl.   STRENGTHS: Crafty, punctual pass rusher … owns a master’s degree in cross-chop maneuvers (his go-to move is a Euro chop) … fast, strong hands for effective armovers, ghost moves and quick sheds … bursts off the snap with body flexibility to corner at the top of rush … hits the turbo button after clearing the outside shoulder ofthe blocker … uses a filthy jab step to shorten the edge and displays an innate feel for creating rush angles … plays with a ton of energy and feet are never stagnant … stays balanced through contact and is accustomed to seeing extra attention … quick eyes/reads lead to line-of-scrimmage stops in the run game … always rallying to the football and pursing to the perimeter … rugby (his favorite sport) developed his toughness and aggression on the football field (turned down a professional rugby career in the Premiership in England) … flagged only once in 2023 (offsides) … heads-up player when zone dropping to find passing lanes … notched two interceptions in 2023, and NFL scouts say UCLA coaches believe he would have been their best tight end had they played him on offense … didn’t miss a game the past two seasons after his medical retirement in 2021 … highly determined and doesn’t waste an ounce of talent (Chip Kelly: “He works really hard at his craft.”) … productive college resume and led the team in sacks, tackles for loss and pressures in both of seasons at UCLA.   WEAKNESSES: Below-average arm length by NFL standards … tends to play tall versus the run and needs to be more consistent controlling the point of attack … must better anticipate outside design to contain runs to his side … more of a hug-and-drag tackler and needs toclean up his misses (had at least one missed tackle in every 2023 tape studied) … injury history will be scrutinized by NFL teams after two-and-a-half years away from football — suffered a neck injury in practice (November 2020) that created numbness and required surgery; after consulting several specialists, Latu was forced to medically retire i n the spring of 2021, but he kept his dreams alive and transferred to UCLA (January 2022), where he was cleared before the 2022 season … started only one season in college (although he played starterlevel snaps in 2022).   SUMMARY: A one-year starter at UCLA, Latu was an outside edge rusher in former defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn’s scheme, splitting his time standing up and rushing with his hand on the ground (was also schemed inside at times). Medically rejected at Washington, he was cleared by doctors after transferring to UCLA and was extremely productive over the past two seasons, with 129 total pressures in 25 games. After leading the FBS in tackles for loss in 2023, the consensus AllAmerican cleaned up on the awards circuit as a senior, taking home the Morris Trophy (best DL in Pac-12), Ted Hendricks Award (top DE in FBS) and Lombardi Award (top OL/DL in FBS). For pass rushers, there is a saying: “Beat the hands, beat the man.” Latu lives by this principle with the cohesive way he weaponizes his hands and feet to defeat blocks (led the FBS with a 24.6 percent passrush win percentage in 2023). As a run defender, his lack of ideal length and pop will show at times, but he made significant improvements with his read/react in this area as a senior. Overall, Latu’s medical history will play a major part in his draft grade, but he is a passrush technician with the instinctive feel and athletic bend to be an impactful “two-way go” rusher in the NFL. His play style and journey are reminiscent of Miami Dolphins 2021 first-rounder Jaelan Phillips.   GRADE: 1st-2nd Round (No. 22 overall)
