Jonathan Newsome Pass Rush Drill vs RB/TE

I came across this video on Instagram.Oh my god, Newsome flat out owned everybody in this pass rush drill with an array of moves. against Bradshaw, completely destroyed Rainey, Jack Doyle, and Herron. I liked the Newsome pick when it happened he has multiple ways to get to the QB and speed. Can't wait for preseason to see him do it to OTs

He has that stutter step that he used on Jack Doyle patented. Used it all the time in college, against guards and tackles. Pagano said in the presser today that Newsome is mostly working at Sam, so if he gets some legitimate pass rush opportunities against TEs and backs, I think he has more than enough ability to make some noise. But he still has to get stronger to go against tackles on the other side of the formation.

Yeah his stutter step inside stunt is wicked. His acceleration is remarkable. I definitely agree he'll need to get stronger, especially to play the run. It'd be really nice to get about a half dozen or more sacks out of him though. :)

wow. I know they were running backs but they got annihilated...

Just wait until Newsome gets bigger/stronger, and actually develops a counter-rush move. I think he can be a monster for us, and it's a good thing he's with a hybrid 3-4 team that will put him in good situations.

With video like that I think Newsome is one of those young new players I will pay close attention to while he is out on the field. The man has moves.

Thanks for the video.

Beating Bradshaw does impress me some as he's one of the better pass blocking RB's out there.

That having been said I'd like to see how he does against starting linemen.

Looking forward to seeing this guy. Wow.

Like I was saying, let's be cautious here.  Of the 4 guys he faced there only one of them is actually a lock to make the team.  Doyle has a good chance of being the 3rd TE.  Rainy and Herron I don't think are terribly likely to make the team unless we decide to keep 4 RB's.

Him bull rushing Bradshaw back was impressive. 5th round rookie against one of the best, if not the best, blocking RBs in the league!

He has a great stutter step inside stunt, I can picture him catching a few guys out with that in the future. Also a nice spin move, didn't catch who it was against though, can tell he's been working with Mathis. Really nice burst off the line. Could turn into a really explosive edge rusher. If he gets a bit stronger and keeps working on his technique then he could be something special in the future.

Certainly one to watch in preseason.

Rainey is gone already. Herron or Tipton will make the team.

Have to be careful watching his practice highlights... There have been some big lowlights also!!

Can't deny that he has potential though, have to give him some time to grow! Can not expect him to make a difference right away.

Things i do like.

1) has elite speed for a linebacker

2) that stutter step though

3) if one move doesn't work he goes to the next

4) keeps working even if ball is not his way

Reminds me of Mathis in this way - drafted late, expected to help on STs, not expecting to start, great motor and speed.

How long until Mathis started?

impressive, but come on guys those were 3rd and 4th string players he was beating not even lineman

I agree although Bradshaw is impressive because he has first rate pass protection abilities for his position.

But a lot of the other guys likely won't make the team.

Well I'm pretty sure Mathis was used as a pass specialist his rookie season and played decently well!

I think he started in 2005 (could be wrong) so 2 years after he was drafted..

Right. In no way am I saying this guy is the next Mathis. Just that their stories are similar.

Both small school stars, not expected to be stars in the pros.

Obviously not comparing off the field histories.

I'd be thrilled if Newsome could make an impact right away, especially with Mathis out for the first 4 games. Had Newsome stayed at Ohio State all 4 years he probably doesn't last until the 5th round. Let's hope #98 teaches him some of the tricks of the trait before they go to Denver in a month or so.

He's already better than Erik Walden . . .

Actually to tell you the truthhhh..

Erik Walden had actually looked pretty darn good so far this camp! I've seen a lot more good from him than bad! Sure still some mistakes but he looks like be is being very aggressive with his pass rush

Ohh yeah to compare anyone to Mathis would be crazy talk! But if you have to choose somone it's gotta be Newsome!

If the coaches give him a chance I think he could make an impact! Might not be huge but even a 2 or 3 sack season like Werner had is enough to get his feet wet!

Didnt they part ways with Rainy?

I actually like Walden...he brings a sense of nastiness to the D that was lacking during the Manning era.
