They sorta did their job.  They still turned it over five times.  Running or passing you turn it over five times you aren’t going to win many games especially against a good team like Tampa.

I agree the defense is an issue too.

It's rarely perfect, but the reason I say they did their jobs is because they scored 31. The D plays better, the warts are covered. That's a good team. Right now, we have a great offense and so so D. The sum total is an inconsistent team imo.

it's not nearly that black and white and you should know that.  better offensive balance could have reduced the number of turnovers, maintained a better advantage in time of possession limiting the number of points the bucs could have scored.  they'd have kept the bucs defense more off balance and their own defense more fresh and possibly could have scored more than just 31, which is going to be required against better offensive teams

At the end of the day, it is that simple. We break it down because one aspect doesn't do their job thus having another part of the team having to do more than their share.

This is a prime example. We nitpik why the offense didn't play better and should gave done more than score 31 points. They did not play a perfect game. They shouldn't have had to do more if other aspects of the team did their part.

That's fine.

Mine is more a question of perspective. Imo, folks get too caught up in how we scored 31 points, rather than the fact we did score 31 points. I agree they could have played better and they need to look at how to improve as always. And if the D doesn't find a way to find more consistency, that offense will need to find a way to play a perfect game when we go up against high scoring teams.

it's not a matter of getting caught up in how we scored the 31 points.  it's much, much more than that which has already been spelled out in numerous posts and it's late so I'm not going to repeat.  but in one of my replies to you I spelled out several important factors that were affected by the poor playcalling that weren't about the total number of points scored.

You keep saying that. But you have to adjust to game flow, what they are showing .I dont care what you say you can not abandon the run especially on 3 man fronts. Look atvwhat Tennessee did with Henry they never gave up on him in a game.

Also our defence is never going to get it done with Flus. Frank needs to get in his ear. I am so tired of nice guy coaches.

And I like Frank.

We don't know what goes on behind closed doors. I don't want a coach that yells at his team or staff in public.

But if he is not holding them accountable behind closed doors, than certainly it is a problem. But I doubt any coach is going to let things slide like that.

We are still ok and in the thick of things for a WildCard. 6-6 with 5 to go. We should beat the Texans next week which will get us to 7-6 going into the Bye. I still think 10-7 will get us in looking at how everything played out Sunday and looking at the Bills, Chargers, Raiders, Broncos, Browns, Steelers, and Bengals remaining schedules. Must wins we need are at Texans, at Jags, Pats, and Raiders. If we get those wins I think it will work out in the long run even if we lose to the Cards.

Today's game was very disappointing, Bucs are great against the run so I think Frank was trying to keep Taylor fresh for the 4th Qtr by letting Wentz throw a lot and it paid off sort of. Taylor scored to tie the game late. Tom is just Tom though and you give him 3 minutes to work with to win a game that usually means you will lose. Once again we were very competitive against a very good to great team but we just aren't closing these type of games = at Ravens, 2nd Titans game, and today. I thought the win at Bills was signature but we need another statement win, maybe we will beat the Pats who knows?

Regarding the Refs, I think they suck. Yeah I will be blunt and flat out say it. A couple of PI's we got called for were really iffy and helped the Bucs out! I will still say teams with Superstar QB's on their teams will get calls in close games. Brady, Mahomes, Lamar, and Rodgers, etc.. Their teams have an advantage going into any game not just because they are elite QB's but their teams will get the majority of iffy calls. It is better for the league when those teams win, I have seen this over and over for 45 years. We even got calls when we had Peyton. The league isn't rigged but the Refs can alter things and we all know it.

As far as Wentz goes, I think he is a good QB, not very good or great but good. I will take good for now. We can't turn the ball over though and win against the very good to great teams. A Good QB will usually get us in the playoffs but we need very good or great one to win a SB. Taylor is great - our best player, I hope he can stay healthy for at least 5 years or so, so we can make a run or 2 at a SB. Our Defense, I love Leonard and Buck, Stallworth has been a pleasant surprise as well but I hate our scheme. Our scheme isn't stopping many top 10 QB's in the league today. We can beat the average and bad QB's/teams with our scheme but that isn't getting us our ring. Allen had a bad day last week luckily for us.

Regarding Frank, I think he is a good coach, not very good or great, but like Wentz good. He is better than Chuck was FWIW.

My post press conference rant. Have a great day Colts Nation!

Could be.  Do you really think that the Refs want Brady to win?

I think that Brady helps to train players how to get away with penalties in the passing game.  NE did that way back with Manning and Harrison.

Dude NE scored off two OPI plays the first Fournette was an illegal rub play only TB won't get called for. The 2nd was that free 1st and goal when Prate run into Carrie pushed and fell... Throw in the Phantom PIs they call on us,  and that INT that should have been a hold or PI on Winfiled. I hate making excuses, but the Refs made multiple calls that help the Bucs crawl back in it...our D has to get deflated when you are clearly getting shafted...DL is gonna go off... he was in the refs grill...

I did leave out 1 thing about the Refs, not only did we get called for 2 bogus PI's, they got away with one when Pittman was clearly held down in our redzone on the Wentz INT. That right there was a gigantic non-call.

The refs need to be graded and rotated we should get to pick and choose the ref crews as fans. Let the refs be controlled by an outside the league party...if the NFL keeps going this way I'm done. The Refs just robbed INDY of a game that had playoff implications... Refs have to much control....

I blame Frank - if he had committed to the run when we were up by 10 in the 3rd, we're probably talking about a different result, with a few more points and a couple fewer turnovers.

Look you can't turn the ball over 4 times, 3 in the 3rd qtr that led to 3 scores. With that being said the Colts were still in a position to tie with 10 seconds left and that says a lot on how good we really are. Most teams would have rolled over in the fetal position. Although the loss sucks in the fact we could have made up some ground on the titans, but since they are NFC it wasn't a conference loss which is the next tie breaker I believe after head to head. So if we win out we will be fine. looking ahead at the schedule of other AFC teams we are in competition for a playoff spot, they have to play other AFC teams. I think Indy gets in at 11-6 or even 10-7.

That's fine.  Maybe with his experience, Brady has the reputation of  pointing out stuff to the refs that our players don't point out, so they listen to him more then ours.  Just saying that I don't know why the Refs would want him or TB to win another SB.  I can see the first one for Arians, but its now just repetitive.

Everyone wants to blame the turnovers for the loss, but not acknowledge what directly led to them.

We didn’t turn the ball over because the refs told us it was time to turn it over. There was another, very specific, reason.

But I guess it’s just silly to some that a team that can zero in on defending the pass and literally not have to give any thought whatsoever to defending a run play is more likely to wind up creating a turnover because of that.

It’s Hines and Pascal’s fault because those turnovers mattered but the ones we gifted the Bucs by telegraphing what we were going to do somehow didn’t.

You don’t win a shoot out with Tom Brady . Especially when you pass it 28 consecutive times in a row with only like 9 completions... this loss, squarely on the coaching staff. We have got to get Frank to wake up. I like the guy, I like him as a coach. But his play calling is down right stupid at times.

I drive for a living, so I couldn’t watch the game. I listened to Matt and Rick broadcast the game, and Rick Venturi was giving Frank Apluses for his play-calls. Rick said before and during the game that the only way to win against the NFL’s #1 Rushing D would be to pass, pass, pass.  As the Colts went 28 times passing, Rick was praising them as they continued marching down the field.

A few of my Tennessee friends texted me yesterday saying “tell Frank thanks for giving us the division” and “you guys do realize you have Jonathan Taylor, right?”

No, nobody on the sideline told him that. Carson was hot, 4 turnovers in the passing game, and fumbled on a dive that he got back…but he was hot….

You know two things can be true at the same time. Just because we didn’t run enough does not mean it was directly the reason for the loss.  You would be right if it was crazy carson that was out of control and was making dumb plays. That is not what happened.

I actually wasn’t mad at the INT throw to Pittman. It wasn’t careless and he gave PItt a chance to come down with the ball. The ones that I was most mad with are the hinsd and pascal ones. Those were stupid plays not taking care of the ball. I can even forgive the strip where Fisher blew his block. That happens. It’s inexcusable to turn the ball over by a muffed punt and a completed pass for first down. Especially when they were unforced errors. See the difference.

I know it has all been said but:

  • Pascal's fumble - he never secured the ball.  Lack of fundamentals and I know he was trying really hard to get extra yards.  But you have to secure the ball.
  • Strip sack - it happens.  But it was a killer in the momentum department.
  • Interception -  Pittman was outfought for the ball.  Was it pass interference?  I don't know.  But I do know Pittman was outworked by a safety.  I wasn't overly impressed with his performance.  With all the passing going on he wasn't much of a factor.
  • Muffed punt - if you misjudge that punt you stay away from it.  Trying too hard again led to lack of fundamentals.
  • I was surprised to see nothing but passing in the 3rd quarter but it was all of the passing in the first half that got us that 10 point lead.  I can complain about the passing but in reality two of the turnovers were player fundamentals and one was a player not fighting hard enough (in my opinion).  I can't say there wouldn't have been turnovers if we were running the ball.
  • I can blame Frank for the lack of balance in the play calling but I can only blame the players for the turnovers.

We gonna miss the play offs and give up a top 15 draft pick. Yeah, I still hate this trade.

That’s wild though bro. We trade a 3rd and a 1st for our franchise QB. Jamal Adam’s fetched 2 firsts as a safety. In my mind Wentz is plenty good to take this team on a playoff run.

If we won yesterday how many people here are outraged over the play calling? There would be a few and it’s probably atleast a little justified. Calling 26 of the same play is bizarre in any game situation. But Reich/Wentz we’re exploiting the Bucs secondary all game long. That was there game plan and it was working. Without the strip sack, and a couple penalties we probably win that game by 20.

I have no idea how the hell one can blame Frank for that loss. We got 24 points in the first throwing the ball against one of the best defenses in the league... we were moving the ball well in the air before the FF strip sack in the second throwing the ball. In fact we had huge troubles gaining any yards on the ground until the VERY LAST drive.

The players just did everything in their power to beat themselves in this game. TOs, untimely penalties, troubles executing, troubles creating pressure and disruption on key downs on defense, drops and TOs on offense... We scored 31 points while turning the ball over 5 times!!! This is on the players!

Some of you have a hard time accepting two things can both be true at the same time. It’s true to say we didn’t run Taylor enough and it’s true to say that wasn’t why we lost. Both can be true. Not running him enough doesn’t always have to mean it cost us the game.

Some of you have a hard time grasping running the ball is safer than passing. We went on a 20-something passing streak and gave away 3(!!) turnovers during that streak (one was a muff, granted). We were up by 10 points and we basically dared them to defend the pass and they punched us in the mouth… multiple times. There is correlation between the playcalling during that streak and the result of the game.

I’m not saying we should have just run non-stop, but we should have kept their defense honest.
Like I said in an earlier post, we scored 24 points on drives were we ran Taylor at least once and had ZERO turnovers. We scored 7 points on drives we didn’t run him at all and had 3 turnovers.

Edit: I understand and appreciate the Bucs have the #1 defense and their plan was to shut out Taylor and force us to throw the ball. Reich honestly had the right idea to exploit that.
Where Reich failed was that he didn’t make the Bucs stick to their initial strategy of forcing out Taylor by running him just a handful of times during the 3rd Q. Instead we got extremely one-dimensional and turned the ball over twice because of it.

Reich out-coaching Arians in the first half but out-coached himself in the second.

We are up ten on the bucs 20 yard line and he is calling deep drops for wentz  against a elite pass rush .   the deep shots off of play action work because it causes a pile up at the line and gives wentz time to throw deep .

go watch what rex ryan is saying he is dead on .  the passing game was only working in the first half because the threat of taylor . the buccs were stacking the box which made it easy on wentz .  the big touchdown was set up by taylor runs and play action .  by the third quarter the bucs adjusted and stopped playing the run making it harder on wentz and he got shut out in the third .  by sticking with the run it would of made the passing game easier in the third .   when a team starts playing nickel run the ball .

Was Frank wrong for leaning toward the pass, no. TB shut the run down well, is Frank wrong for running the same type of play 10+ times without diversity when it's a one score game, yes. Did the Refs give Tampa the game, yes...don't believe for a second if we were running and successful those holding calls weren't coming...

Like I said in an earlier post, we scored 24 points on drives were we ran Taylor at least once and had ZERO turnovers. We scored 7 points on drives we didn’t run him at all and had 3 turnovers.

It is also rhythm. If a D gets into the same rhythm, it makes the OL counter moves predictable and eventually it stops working without a variation.

I remember the highly vaunted offense of Peyton and the 2013 Broncos going into Foxboro, Belichick played Peyton like he played Jim Kelly and the Bills, he conceded the run and Knowshon Moreno ran for 225 yards, and in the process, Peyton and the passing offense, when they had to pass, did not have the rhythm to do so effectively and lost an OT game. So rhythm for blocking and rhythm for passing are all important, no matter how much of it is a case of going against the strength of the other team, just in the name of rhythm and keeping them honest.

A few other occasions - Kyle Shanahan and the Falcons go up 28-3 passing the ball but they had started out the game with sweep runs and toss sweeps with DeVonta Freeman. Without realizing how many plays their D was on the field for, they kept chucking it, leading to a missed blitz block by Freeman for a turnover, and then the infamous series, up 28-20, going back with a holding penalty and sack trying to pass while in FG range leading to the Patriots comeback. Then, Peyton vs Saints in the SB, down 17-24, 6 straight passes, 40 plus passes against a ball hawking team that had thrived on turnovers despite giving up tons of passing yards throughout the year, 3 plus minutes still on the clock to incorporate runs but no, we have to get greedy with the pass and the pick six happened and the rest is history. 2006 AFCCG, however, down 6-21, and down 13-21, we did not panic by passing too much, mixed in plenty of runs with passing, and that is how we tied the game and that is how we won the game too (Marvin insisted we run it on 3rd and 2 with Addai for game winning TD).

No matter what the strength of an opposing team, mixing in a few runs keeps the clock moving, keeps the rhythm if we need to run against tired legs down the stretch preserved, and our D's legs preserved too in a complementary game. How many years and games of football do fans have to see before we realize it?

the turnovers were a direct result of not running the ball the stripped should of never happened .  up 10 in the redzone and frank is calling 7 step drops against a elite defensive line .   that is the game right there

I heard a good analogy by jake query on the radio on why fans always blame Reich and not players. It’s because it’s easier for fans to see themselves as a coach then it is as a player with physical athletic traits. Everyone thinks they are a arm chair GM and coach and it’s so easy to do.

how many games does derrick henry average 3 yards or  less in the first half then wears down the defense and get 150 in the second half .    if the titans had frank as a coach he would give up the run and have tannehill throw 50 times a game and lose every time .   stick with your bread and butter and stay balanced .

I don’t want to be like the Titans. I don’t want to be where we can only win by running the ball. You have to win being flexible.
