Possible 2nd Round Trade Down

I'd love to trade down from 34 to early 3rd round. Would give us some nicely spaced out picks starting with the #46 through the 4th and 5th rounds. Not to mention, we'd basically own the CRAP out of next year's draft in the 1st and 2nd rounds (especially if both Washington and NYJ suck which there is a good chance for).

With Deshaun Watson possibly getting banged up with their OL issues, Texans decide to trade Clowney to the Colts for pick No.34 and Jacoby Brissett (for insurance)

What I am seeing is that Ballard is sticking to his long term plan and not falling into the trap of getting a head of schedule and start swinging for Super Bowls before you have a proper foundation in place.

The Colts might take a step back this year for years of future sustained success.

Thats what Ballard is building for IMO, setting this team up for long term success and he knows the best way to do that is with draft picks and then using your money to re-sign guys you drafted and only using free agency to get a guy here or there.

He also knows the more picks you have the better chance you have to get more special guys because you aren’t going to hit on every pick.

Hes sticking to his plan and it might not be popular but if you look around the league it’s what most teams who have sustained success do.

I don't like hearing Ballard say "There are still GOOD players out there for us.." I rather hear him say "There are still some great players out there, that can come in here, and make an immediate impact for this team!!"

Truth hurts. Fact of the matter is, there are only a handful of truly elite players in this draft, & they were long gone by the time pick number 26 came up. I'm confident we'll still get some quality starters, but if you're expecting 2 more all-pro rookies from this draft class, that's just not realistic. There might not even be 5 all-pro caliber players in this entire draft.

What does the draft have to do with paying money?

I'm talking about what the writers on Colts.com are talking about, if we trade early 2nd round picks, for later rounds, and future draft picks that we could use to bargain with for off season trades. What I'm saying is, is that (example) if the Colts trade for Bell, and gave the team our 2 2nd round picks next year, we won't pay that big money to them. After this season, we will start to see big players refusing to talk to the Colts, because they know now, that the Colts will never come close to what they are asking.

I would accept both of their seconds in a heartbeat. However, I really like the idea of getting a 2020 first and a 2019 third/fourth if we are going to trade down as well.

Next years draft has a lot more of those "can't miss" players.

Completely agree I’d love adding a 2020 1st and 2019 3rd if we could by trading the 34th pick.

TBH next year's draft is gonna be better than this year's, atleast in the first two rounds it seems. As long as Ballard gets the early 3rd and maybe another mid-rounder this year, I'm all for adding high level picks next year. Imagine going into next year's draft with 2 1st, 2 2nd rounders or 1 1st and 3 2nd rounders. Ballard would have complete freedom to move up for a generational talent if he so wishes.

No, but I would think they would do what ever they need to to do to jump up and get either Simmons or Lawrence who is projected to be the next Vince Wilfork.

Let's keep on trading back until all we have to draft are backup players.

You said this, and I said the comment was obtuse. One the the definitions says....

suggests a refusal to see something apparent to others, or a willful ignorance or insensitivity to the real facts of a situation.

I was not trying to offend, but to say that the idea that all the Colts would be drafting would be back ups...to me.... is the very definition of obtuse.

Simmons has off the field red flags, a torn ACL, & will likely mis the entire season, trading up for that would've been a nightmare. And I'm skeptical Lawrence is the next Wilfork... Quinnen Williams is on probably that level, but I don't see it with Lawrence.

Why is everyone so sure that Arizona is not willing to trade back for more picks? Not much difference between 33 and 34. Not trying to poo-poo on everyones theories, but the teams know Ballard will wheel and deal. So if I were set on a certain guy, I would call Arizona first. And I believe Arizona would not be against having more picks. So if a team is going to give up big picks to move up, I would bet they go to Arizona.

Probably more than one team willing to trade up.

It's very possible they look to trade but they desperately need OL help. And potentially CB help but they really need OL. I think they'd be wise not to pass on some of the guys left.

Maybe Ballard could get a young starting player along with draft capital.  It looks like he's in the drivers seat.  L. Williams, N. Agholor as possibilities.  Anything is possible when a feeding frenzy takes place.  Now I'm even more excited.

Could be.  But they'll get picks by trading Rosen.

They just drafted a new QB.  Usually a GM wants the new star to get a WR, or a RB, or an OT to help him, so they might want the BPA at 33.

Yup, even aside from the big trade Ballard recently said that he has a good relationship with their FO.

I'd say that the relationship has been pretty one-sided... the Jets traded us that pick last year, now they're entertaining potentially mortgaging their future while giving up SEVERAL picks to get it back.

What? If we don't have a foundation now, then how do you expect these same guys to win a SB in the future. Bill Polian tried this and it took him 9 years to get to a SB, even though we were the best foundation team in the regular season. Since then, 2 GMs are still trying this, and 10 years later we are still not a SB team. And since we don't like to give money to elite players in the off season that could come in and make an immediate impact, then what are we going to do with Leonard and Nelson when their contract are do? Are we going to start with a new foundation, because Ballard refuses to pay elite players?

I rather them use that 34th pick....so many good players available

Would be nice but seems Ballard is only interested  in project wrs. Instead of drafting a brown, campbell, or butler he may take some body like slayton later in the draft or Boykin. Then he will find some long athletic corner who might not be able to cover, but has the upside

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!!! :)

Jets give up future 1st and current 3rd rounder for pick No.34 :)

A lot of teams are calling about that pick. You might see a 1st if teams get into a bidding war.

It seems that we are going to get more draft capital out our #34 overall pick than the #26 pick?! That is kind of a hard pill to swallow.

This is why I was so ticked last night. I was fine with trading out of the first. But not for what little return we got
