It's the throwing motion that causes pain

Isn’t that the same injury Luck had? Why is Mack’s time table so much shorter?

There are different (common) types of SLAP tears, but all fall under labral tears.

The thread title is very misleading.  Ballard said he "underwent" offseason shoulder surgery.  It's over and done with.  Undergoes implies he just had it.

I'm not trying to be misleading. I really didn't even think about the difference between undergoes/underwent, but sure, I’ll edit it to be more clear.

Shoulder injuries like this might have a "normal" get back to square recovery time...but your full strength time is usually 12-18 months with a lot of them. Shoulders are a *...and I'm not making a joke about Luck...they genuinely are awful...

Really beginning to wonder about the teams prior administration and the docs handling of these injuries.  Forcing players to play through severe injuries?!

cause he's not throwing or it could be a different location etc.

Ya, just like Luck's.

Here’s to hoping Mack isn’t as injured. As another poster previously said, all of that type of injury are lumped together in title, but there are differing lvls of damage, and how the damage affects rehab/healing time.

Several things. . . he got it quicker then Luck who dealt with it and played with it for a couple seasons.

But mostly it's the fact that he's not throwing the football at NFL speed 30 times a game.

This is for the record one of the reasons that they worry so much about QB injuries and the QB's always wear red jerseys in practice.  There are a lot of injuries that a player at any other position could play through that a QB just can't.

I mean you see it all the time LB's with broken arms or hands go out onto the field with a giant cast on their arm/hand.  But there is simply no way a QB could play through that.

Not sure I follow this. Are we talking about the coaching staff because Ballard was the GM last year and would be in charge of the team still. I would assume Mack played through because he couldn't do more damage to the shoulder and it was more pain related. It also could be why when EVERYONE was crying for him to get more carries the team kept his work load down.

    • He seems like he was a college player that may have been thrust into a starting role because of natural gifts, perhaps without full immersion into the programs.  He improved his accuracy at least a little bit in the short time he received NFL coaching, so maybe with attention to S&C, he'll make some noticeable jumps in that area too.
    • Amazing how MPJ had a season that helped him solidify a huge bag and Downs had a really good rookie season that has everyone excited for next season, yet Minshew is somehow responsible for holding back Pierce.   Pierce is not an elite athlete (at least by NFL WR standards). He's not a good route runner. He doesn't win his routes often (#124 in the NFL last year in route win rate). He struggles to separate. What about AP says "great upside"?    With the Colts drafting a WR in R2 who can offer a similar skillset...and likely more...the writing is on the wall that they are looking for more upside than just effort and blocking at WR2.
    • AR even admitted he wasn't fully ready for the speed and power of NFL players. So I would think strength and conditioning is going to be a huge priority this summer.   Not to get all doom and gloom, but I hope he's not one of those guys who gets hurt all the time. Between his Sr year of HS and 4 games into his NFL career, he has at least suffered two AC sprains, a torn meniscus and multiple concussions. That might not seem too bad, until you realize it doesn't even encompass 30 starts at QB. That's less than two full seasons in the NFL. And if a player had that many injuries across 2-3 years in the NFL, I think people would view him differently than they do AR.   But that said, it's prob just as likely he ends up like Stafford and this is a just a bump in the road to a long career.
    • Pierce had most snaps as a WR in the league and Pittman was fourth. Hopefully fewer snaps will keep them fresher. They are both great blockers so the other guys are going to have to show the ability to block to win those snaps.
