Clowney not ready for camp

PUP is a placeholder. He's restricted to individual activities during camp until he's ready to go full speed. And if he isn't 100% and they're not ready to put him on the active roster, then he can stay on PUP for the beginning of the regular season.

But if they don't start him on PUP, he can't go on PUP later. He'd have to be placed on IR, and the soonest he could come back would be Week 8, if they used the return designation.

This is entirely procedural, which the article stated. There's nothing strange about a player not being 100% and fully cleared less than a year after microfracture surgery. It's possible that he doesn't miss a game this season. Unfortunately, once he need to have microfracture, he probably significantly shortened his career. But that doesn't mean he won't be able to play well right now.

A bit of an overreaction at this point

I think he'll be a bust too, but mostly because of his work ethic in regards to his injury. People come back from it, but it's a long hard road, and from everything I've read, he's on the lazy side. Hard to blame him since he's always been so much better physically than everyone.

I'm just saying he's in the process of becoming the bust of the decade. You cant say it for sure now, but in a year or 2 I think it'll be a pretty common statement. He's well on his way IMO.

Jamarcus Russel would be a bigger bust just because of the size of his contract

he will never come close to living up to his draft hype.  called it all along.

his play wasnt even anything special his last year in college.  im not rooting for injuries, i just dont think he is the player the draft process made him out to be

i had a hard time understanding why the texans drafted him.  he is a 43 DE that is not versatile enough to play OLB.   whats worse is they needed a QB.  Drafting BPA is usually a good policy but QB trumps all other positions , BPA included

mack was the better/safer prospect all along as far as defenders go

I called him a bust before the draft.  You can check it.

People with poor work ethics don't succeed in the NFL no matter how physically gifted they are.  And playing on the same team as JJ Watt does not magically endow someone with a better work ethic.

Deion Sanders was known for having a terrible work ethic, at least according to Jerry rice.

I don't think clowney has the goods either. But way to early to call him a bust

Microfracture surgery is no joke.

"Even if it's super successful, it's not normal cartilage," says Virginia-based orthopedic surgeon Derek Ochiai. "When you do it, you're hoping the cartilage is good enough that the knee can function close to normal. It's not like you're making that knee perfect."

I hate it for you guys. I honestly do. But I thought he was a bust then, and I still think hes a bust now.

Well it depends on what you define as a bust. The guy is only in his second season and I don't think he can be faulted for getting hurt. Nature is something no man can beat. I hope this doesn't become a habitual thing, though, with J.D. Becoming the Greg Oden or Joel Embiid of the NFL.

Calling him a bust or wasted draft pick at this stage in the game is just not appropriate. Granted if the Texnas knew he would be having this surgery before the 2014 draft , he would not have been selected 1.1. But you at least have to see how he recovers from the surgery and look at how he plays before making judgements .

quoted because obviously people need to read it before making crazy bust claims. I sure sure hope we don't have to see a bunch of people eat crow this year if clowney lights up luck. He is a long way from a bust yet...he still has work to do to get back on the field but he is a marvelous athlete that with the proper coaching and health could be an absolute beast with watt.

I don't understand the hate people have for Clowney. He's actually a funny down to earth guy if you listen to any interviews he's done. His last season at USC was disappointing but as a fan there was nobody else I'd rather have out there (Melvin Ingram maybe). I think most of y'all need to ease up on him and stop listening to the *s making him out to be some evil waste of talent

Neither did Bo Jackson. But then again, he's Bo Jackson.

Unfortunate. Did Burfict from cincy have the same surgery?

Yep. Travis Kelce had it done too his rookie yr and came fairly well. Kinda depends how far gone the cartilage is, but it's always gonna be an issue for the guys that get it done.....from what I have read anyway.

Surprised he's not ready to go.

I must have misread talk about how good he looked.

But he has lots of time before the season begins

Only two players of skill positions I know to make it after Microfracture surgery-  Reggie Bush and Marcus Colston.  But their skill sets are even different from Clowney's.  I feel bad for the guy.

While I concur QB is a little bit of an exception to the rule when it comes to BPA, I don't think there was anyone worth taking at #1.

Trading down in hindsight might have been the better option but hey ho.
