What type of coach would you prefer?

Hopefully we make a coaching change at the end of the year and if we do (we better) what type of coach would you prefer?  I'm going to make three categories and just for arguments sake we are going to say they have one main attribute. The first coach is a motivator. I would categorize chuck as this type. It's a coach that the guys enjoy playing for and is a rah rah type. Coach number 2 is a strategist. I would put belichick in this category. This type of coach is the type who game plans really well and makes good adjustments. Coach number 3 is a teacher. He is really good at making players progress into better players especially rookies. I know everyone will want a mixture of these but just for arguments sake your choice has mostly one of the above areas of expertise.  Which type would you choose to be the new coach for the colts next year based on our team makeup and our needs?  I think I would go with a good strategist but a good teacher wouldn't be bad either since our team is so young.  Btw guys I know this whole thing is kinda goofy but I'm bored and there isn't much to talk about especially positive things happening this year for the colts so I figured I would ask this lol. I'm interested in what you guys prefer.

Unless you have Belichick, I'm not sure how much it matters.  In the end, it's about talent and health.  Chuck is not a great coach, but if he had Seattle's defense from recent years to go along with Luck, could he have won a Super Bowl?  Probably.

As for who it will be, with this roster and the uncertainty of Luck's future, I don't see any high profile coach or candidate coming here.  Someone from KC, probably.

To be less flippant...

Admittedly this is a little black and white, and in reality the lines of responsibility are more blurred, but taking your options one by one:

Type 3 - The Teacher

This isn't a HC's job, this is the job of the position coaches. They teach technique and help install the game plans. Why I don't know why people go on about Chuck being a DB specialist. If he's spending extended time coaching DBs, he's not doing his job.

Type 2 - The Strategist.

Again, though this one is more blurry, this shouldn't be the HC but the OC/DC. They build a game plan, with input from the HC no doubt, but at the end of the day it's on them. Sure you get exceptions to this (Andy Reid for one?), but it can also be detrimental if the HC gets too involved. A good example is the 2011 Jets when Ryan interfered with defensive play calling to the point it caused confusion as he didn't know the game plan inside and out.

That leaves the Motivator, and this is probably where a HC can have the most impact on players. Look at 2012, those players would have literally done anything for Chuck and look at the results we got.

Side note, anyone using BB as a yard stick  is on a hiding to nothing. The man is the biggest outlier going.

An offensive minded coach who can strategize with the best of them and play to the strength of his guys. In terms of his demeanor , I want a no nonsense coach who commands discipline but also has a bit of fire to him. Ballard has that type of personality as a GM. He’ll cut/deal people in a heartbeat and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. A HC similar to him would mesh well.

My top candidates are:

-Josh McDaniels

-David Toub

-John Gruden

-Nick Saban (although he’s more defensive minded)

I want a good manager who knows his way around the league and can find and hire very good coaches, especially the coordinators. I feel this was a huge shortcoming of CP. We need good teachers, smart game planners and ones who can gain the respect of their players and are good game managers.

What I would hope we get is a strategist type coach with an ability to reach his players. As for the other types, I don't want a rah rah guy on the team, I want a system producing team. I want the DC and OC coach to be teachers of the game and gets the ability out of their guys while the HC is putting together plans for each game. That's how successful teams are built is by employing someone at the top who is a strategist guy and knows how to break down film and knows what his team can do to offset the opponents strengths and capitalize off their weakness. Dang near every team knows our team can't defend the middle area of the field very well and when they need that 3rd down completion, they go there for the highest % chance of being successful. They also know our offense likes to use longer developing plays and can exploit our oline to get pressure on our guy. Now, building these into the game plans are critical for success as is the execution of that plan. We need coaches, both from the head coach and the coordinators who can do this in concert with each other. BB does this better than any coaching staff in the league IMHO.

So that's what I want, a HC with strategy attributes since he is the leader of the gang and has the final decisions to make and I want his coaching staff to be the teachers of their trade. Fundamentals and discipline is what we desperately need.

I like Harbaugh, Gruden or Cowher. But none of which may be available.

Harbaugh is a college coach. That is his best fit.

Gruden wont leave the camera long enough to be a head coach.

You want Cowher?  It took him 14 years to win a super bowl. So why?

While these guys are popular if Pagano is fired I want a head coach who can put together a good staff.

I just want a tough disciplinarian someone who can make these guys accountable. I also want a coach that is smart and who will make smart decisions at critical times. We haven't had that in at least 6 years. I know some want a coordinator from the Pats. I'm not a fan of his at all so much so I won't even mention his name.

I understand your point of view but today's players do not respond to a tough disciplinarian anymore.  The misconception of a guy like Belichick being a tough guy is exaggerated. That is a persona he puts on for the media and camera. Take a guy like Tom Coughlin. He was a hard disciplinarian and wasn't getting results at New York. He changed and started lightening up on his players and they won two super bowls.

Today's NFL is nothing like it was a few years ago. It's entertainment, not a boot camp attitude wise.

I want a good/wise decision maker.  Football isn't rocket science.  A coach who weighs each decision he has to make everyday, every week and every month and comes away with the right decision most of the time, is the kind of guy that will probably bring eventual success.

I will never understand the Gruden love. Nick Saban is 66 and has  11 Million/Yr salary.

Wonder if McDaniels has learned anything?

Gruden is the best coach for Andrew Luck. Their personality’s mix perfectly and Gruden’s schemes seems like they were designed to be run by Luck.

Here are my Top 3:

Jim Harbaugh - but he wont leave Michigan IMO. He has great ties here in Indy and people love him here. He was 1 play away from winning a SB with Kaep at QB.

Peyton Manning - he will never Coach and one day will probably be a GM somewhere. A great offensive mind and the most loved/best player ever to play here.

John Gruden - he wont leave that easy/great gig on Monday night's paying him huge money. Has won a SB and he loves Andrew Luck. So with all that said, I am out LUCK lmao

-I don't know about McDaniels, he was terrible in Denver. Yeah it was a long time ago but that is enough to scare anyone off.

-Toub will probably be our next Coach, Ballard likes him and had KC ties with him.
