Drew Rosenhaus: We've made progress on extension for #colts TY Hilton. Working hard to get it done.

Rosenhaus: TY love it in Indy and wants to spend rest of his career with Colts.

Will be interesting in the coming days.  If TY truly wants to stay here, does he break the bank or take a somewhat cap friendly deal

How is that guy roaming the complex unescorted and who is responsible for removing Rosenhaus from the "Shoot on sight" list?  Must be a clerical error.

He's Frank Gore's agent (who spurned the Eagles to sign with the Colts), and Darius Butler's agent (who probably could have done better in free agency than $2.5m/year with $1m guaranteed). I feel like he might represent a couple other players, also.

But my point is that I think the Colts front office has a good working relationship with Rosenhaus. I know he makes everyone cringe, myself included, but hopefully he's about business with the Colts. He and Hilton are saying the right things right now.

To the bolded...yikes.  I'm a big fan of Grigs, but that could be a red flag about our front office! :D

I'd liken it to raising toddlers...you don't know if you're doing it right unless they throw a fit every now and then....

I'm with ya, Superman!     I too cringe over Rosenhaus.    But the stories I've read today are very encouraging.   I was very pleased to read DR has a number of Colts' clients.   And those deals appear to have gone relatively smoothly over a period of time.

Plus,  his comments about TYH didn't have to be said.   Saying them publicly like this is a good sign, I think.....   Hopefully this will be an August with a lot of encouraging news........

Better days ahead!

Yes, they are Superman. "I’ve got a lot of respect for (general manager) Ryan (Grigson) and Jim. They do a great job. I would guess (Labor Day) would be outstanding. That’s a good time frame.”

I honestly thought Hilton was gone, but it's nice to see TY's probably not going anywhere, especially if an agent's client wants to remain here.

It does feel bizarre Rosenhaus & Irsay getting along though. I'm not complaining I'm just saying it's like a lion & a gazelle posing for best friends forever photo op. Very unconventional & almost unheard of.

So this may well be a reach, but if Rosenhaus has a good working relationship with the F/O and a number of clients at the Colts it might not beyond the realms of possibility he won't push for stupid contracts... Yeah I know that's kinda his job but hear me out.

If he say got TY a whopper of a contract he would recognise surely that there's less money in the pot for his other clients and yes of course you can say why would he care when he can tender them out to other teams but if you're an agent of a player who is doing very well at a franchise why risk it with a move for a few dollars more. Take TY, I think a good model for him is Randell Cobb's deal. I'm 99.9% sure Cobb could have got a lot more going somewhere like Oakland, but by staying GB with a franchise QB he's more likely to maintain that performance and still command top dollar when he comes round to his next contract. Throw in a good chance of a SB ring and it's an attractive proposition.

I'll close with a cliché and axiom; The NFL is a business and business is all about relationships.

I doubt it's that it probably has more to do with his client's wishes.  If his client wants to stay with a particular team then he will probably do more good faith negotiations.  If his client doesn't care where he goes then he'll probably play hardball.

A guy like Randall Cobb for example might have gotten a couple more million from Oakland but he'd also know that he'd fade completely into obscurity and have no chance at championships playing with a much worse quarterback.

So some clients might say they want to stay put and are willing to leave a couple million on the table rather then go somewhere and fade into obscurity.

I'm on record saying that anything less than $12-13m/year is a discount for the Colts. Getting it done a year early might get Cobb/Maclin level overall numbers, but I still think the "new money," which is how agents give these numbers to the media, will be in the upper range. And they can get away with that in Hilton's case because he has a year remaining; so they can claim that he's above Cobb and Maclin in new money, but the total value averaged over all years, including the one year still remaining, could be in the $10-11m/year range.

My projection a few weeks ago was five years, $54m, but new money would be $13m/year over four years. It's kind of the best of both worlds.

Love how some of you guys would pay Hilton 11 or 12 million but not 13 or 14. Do you really think 2 million somewhere else would benefit this team more? We have 3 irreplacable players. Luck, Hilton, and Vontae. We need to keep these 3, even if we overpay. We aren't the Seahawks trying to hold a pro bowl defense together. We can afford Allen, Fleener and Constanzo. You pay your elite players, especially a team that is still rebuilding. Poor baby takes 2 million extra off the salary cap, waaaaaaaa. Lets just not have Hilton instead and weaken ourselves for a $2 million dollar backup player.

When I mentioned Cobb I didn't expect TY would sign for similar money. As you say the market has moved on and not only that, TY stands to be the premier WR available in FA as things stand with the Bryant/Thomas deals.

I do think factors outside of the money play into our favor. Unlike say Dez Bryant, TY seems to be a more grounded guy, not getting into trouble etc. so there's less of a risk factor in ponying up guaranteed money. Having Luck to offer shouldn't be sniffed at either..

But where do you draw the line, if you say 2 million extra isn't the break point, is 3? 4?

Not necessarily disagreeing in this specific case, but you're kinda looking at it in as arbitrary a fashion as those you're berating.

4 year $52 mil. or 5 year $65 mil. extension??? That probably gets it done but maybe too much in the eyes of most. 5 years $60 mil. is Mike Wallace money, maybe there is a chance we could settle there.

If you do the five year extension -- six years total, including 2015 -- that's more time to hold down the cap hits early in the contract, and you can throw an option bonus in next year to spread out the signing bonus prorating.
