a06cc
I had the pleasure of looking at coaches film in April and May when NFL.com gave out free access. That film against Dallas in 2018 had me sold for him played DE. 2019 was a wash for him because of injury. 3rd and long I have no problem with him playing inside at those moments. He needs to rotate to keep Houston fresh. Turay is coming back as well. The depth we have on defense will come in to play this second half of the season. Dark Superman
His biggest issue has always been injuries and getting playing time. Last year I guess he wasn't showing enough in practice to gain enough confidence with Eberflus to have him play during games. If he can stay stay on the field, I have nothing but high expectations for him.
Fisticuffs111
I’m definitely on record as not liking the Lewis pick, but I hope he continues to prove me wrong. Seems like he’s taken the challenge well, a lot like Grover did last year. The article mentions potentially cutting into Autry/AQM’s snaps, cited DL coach saying it would probably be more like that than cutting into backups. Thought that was interesting because Autry has seemed gassed at times. Goes along with our philosophy of keeping the DL fresh. Also, I’ve noticed Lewis in Buckner’s spot, or at least on the interior (unless I’m misremembering), on two separate occasions when we’ve had the opposing team pinned at their own goal line. Which I guess could make sense in some respect, but still caught my eye.
Defjamz26
Yeah he never had any business at DT. Idk what Ballard was thinking with that. He’s definitely making plays this year. He might be able to be a long term rotational piece if he keeps his current pace up.

Ballard’s thinking was he could be a tweener. However at 6’3 and 270 he needed to be converted to a DE in the NFL. The day we drafted him I said he needs to play DE. Like your take here as well. Have to give Ballard credit for depth this season.
EastStreet
He's definitely a tweener. I'm still cautious on him. While he's got snaps in every game, he's only made stat contributions in two games (MN and Cinci), two of the worst OLs in the NFL. I'd love for him to emerge, but I'm not counting on it. AQM has looked far better at DE, if we're talking about a replacement for Autry.

About a week ago on the draft page you were down on Lewis and Turay and Benogu. A week later there’s now a positive story about Lewis and now you write that he’s making plays this year. Whichever way the wind blows.

holeymoley99
I had him listed as my surprise breakout as well, we have some nice DE pieces with Houston,Autry,AQM,Lewis and Turay coming back, starting to worry if Bangou needs to be shifted back to LB like he played often in college maybe take some of Franklin's snaps ? DougDew
When drafted, I thought that he would be mainly a LDE. Not particularly bendy or quick enough to be the main pass rusher, but would be good on the edge against the run and could get his share of QB pressures. Not really a sack guy, but would get sacks when the back coverage was good. When I heard that Ballard drafted Lewis as mainly a 3T, I thought it was a bad pick, especially since he traded up for him. Now if he's going to be good at playing the role Sheard used to play, but mainly at LDE, which I think is appropriate and is probably his ceiling, then the investment in a late 2nd round pick would seem to be worth it. Nice to see that he's having success at the position a lot of us thought was his natural position from the beginning.
NorthernColt
The problem is when converting alot of oversized DE's to DT's is, physical maturity plays in alot more then what people think. Like if you look at his height and weight, that should be able to play inside on passing downs and get decent push. But alot of times that works with guys well into their careers. Like Sheard and Autry for example. They have the physical maturity, or "man strength" to play inside now, even though when they came into the league and established themselves, they were pretty much strictly DE's. Leave him outside, rotate him on early downs with Autry on the strong side, and let him gain confidence and experience. Worry about moving him inside later on. Coffeedrinker
If he takes snaps away from Autry then that is probably a good thing.

shasta519
I know I am going to sound negative...but let's be real...it is way too early for a victory lap here. Some context...his 1.5 sacks have come against basically bottom 5 OLs in MIN and CIN (#6 and #3 in adjusted sack rate per DVOA). More context...the sack in MIN game was against Dru Samia (33.5 PFF grade)...and the (half) sack in CIN game was mostly a coverage sack where he bull-rushed Alex Redmond (who was on the PS three weeks ago). Also, both sacks came from the intentior (on the CIN one...he did an inside stunt)...so it's not because he is playing DE. I point this context out...because that has been his career to date...beating bad OL players. When he is lined up against legit NFL OL players...especially RTs...he has really struggled for the most part...or just been invisible. But that's not a bad thing...because this is the story of most bottom-roster DL depth players...which is what Lewis is. I know most people like a comeback story...but the Lewis hype is a bit much...as if Tyquan Lewis is on some special phased approach to redemption. The local media was really driving this Lewis breakout narrative during TC...so I am not at all surprised to see someone write a follow up article like this (and since it's bye week...wouldn't be surprised if someone else does too). This writer probably had most of this written in August...was just waiting for Lewis to have a decent game so he could plug in the stats.

Yeah he was a tweener at Ohio State. Actually, he might have played more on the interior in college as well. I just thought that he didn’t have the skill set nor body to play on the inside long term. Ballard thought he was Michael Bennett. I’m glad the coaching staff has realized where he belongs now. Makes you wonder if some of his development was affected by the fact that when he wasn’t injured, he was being groomed for a position he didn’t have any future at. I like AQM...but I am not really counting on either player to replace Autry. I assume there will be some type of investment into the position this offseason...at least I hope there is. You don't trade for and sign Buckner...to not put other really good talent around him.

Not saying he's ever going to be tier 1 guy, but I'd bank on him at DE more than Lewis. Autry though is a tweener too. I like him more at DE though than DT. Not sure where I like Lewis at yet. Just too small of a sample size thus far, and against some very bad OLs.

Dogg63
Apparently Coach Baker's warming up to Lewis and intends to up his snap count. Works for me! Baker said "I anticipate him playing a lot more than he's played" moving forward. "Because I think he's earned the right to do that, and I think that'll help his development; I think it'll help our defense." https://www.colts.com/news/brian-baker-tyquan-lewis-grover-stewart-bye-week-conference-call-2020 Through six games, Lewis has played 86 defensive snaps, which has been about 23 percent of the total defensive plays on the year, and he has seven tackles (two for a loss) with 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hits (of which 5 tackles and 1/2 sack came against the Bengals). To date, I think that’s been one of Ballard’s worst calls. Every GM has them though so no biggie. At least the team has seemed to acknowledge the mistake and put him at his natural position. He is gonna face a guard one on one that is the point the the 3 technique to line up between the tackle and guard to avoid being doubled by the center and guard. his speed is the reason why they moved him , against a tackle he is to slow but against a guard who mostly struggles in space it will get a good pass rush . Its not like guards are bigger then tackles they all weigh about the same just tackles are usually taller and better in space . I dont see a big deal if lewis is going one on one against a tackle or a guard . as long as lewis can get off his block it shouldnt matter , only in short yard run situations would it really matter .
