NFL zeroed in on locker room attendant

Just came across this article in the Washington Post. The author dug up an interesting segment from a memo Goodell issued to the competition committee in 2008, in the aftermath of SpyGate. I think it will be up to pressure from the media and public to hold him to this sentiment.

“Too often, competitive violations have gone unpunished because conclusive proof of the violation was lacking,” Goodell wrote in that memo. “I believe we should reconsider the standard of proof to be applied in such cases, and make it easier for a competitive violation to be established. And where a violation is shown, I intend to impose more stringent penalties on both the club and the responsible individual(s). I will also be prepared to make greater use of draft choice forfeiture in appropriate cases. I believe this will have the effect of deterring violations and making people more willing to report violations on a timely basis.”

I posted this multiple times in the mega thread. They dont need concrete proof to punish the franchise

Of course he was told to do it.

Yup....   former QB's like Aikman and Brunel,  as well as guys like Saturday and Schlereth and Dawkins have all said that no ball boy or locker room attendant would ever do this without someone else much higher up telling them to.

Not a change the kid did it on his own.   How would he even know what to set it to?    And 11 of the 12 balls had basically the same pressure.

I wasn't the least bit impressed by Kraft today.    Ordinarily, I think he's a good guy.    But today he looked like an old fool....

so awhile back in an interview, Mark Cuban predicted that the NFL would 'implode' in a decade...

I believe Cuban's stance was on the basis that the NFL was just 'too greedy', now it looks like it just might implode because Goodell is letting the league turn into the NFL, & it may take place ALOT sooner than a decade...

Coming from a league that had a ref/gambling scandal not so long ago lol.

This scandal doesn't hurt the nfl at all. Hell, my mother texted me and asked me about it because they were talking about it on The View.

I predicted it wouldn't be around in 20 years about 10 years ago.

It's so poorly run for how big it is.

There's zero accountability.

The referees are terrible.

There are too many rules.

They play favorites.

They penalize players and turn around and use those penalties for marketing.

I believe Cuban that it will implode soon.

I've never subscribed to the idea that Kraft is a good guy.

I think all of this comes from him.

It made me sick when Jeff Saturday was all buddy buddy with him during the lockout.

And the room was a bathroom. He spent 90 seconds in it. And he had both the Patriots and Colts balls.

The cherry being the Patriots themselves gave the nfl this video last week.

This witch hunt is embarrassing

Why do you care? There are 11 facts that cant be explained. None of the so called explanations hold water. So you think the footballs deflated themselves? You have to be a Patriots fan so there is nothing that can be said that you wont deflect. Just like the whole Patriot organization. You come into this forum under the false identity of BlacknGold and have a total of 96 post. Most of those post have been made right here in this forum this last week. You are not fooling anyone with your phony self.

Several people have come out today blasting the Patriots. Aikman came out today and said he believes it happened without a doubt, and it was Brady who would have done it. Jerry Rice came out today also and said if the Patriots win the SB it should be with an asterisk. They have too many strikes against them. Many teams had made the same accusation.

And last but not least, Belichick became an expert in science overnight and tried to blame it on the weather and give  pseudo science excuses about what happens when a ball is outdoors for a long time, how the PSI is affected, and rambled on about other science reasons that affected the balls.

Bill Nye, the science guy, came out and said what Belichick was saying was ludicrous. To make matters worse for what Belichick gave as his opinion and the reason the balls were deflated, Neil deGrassie a respected astrophysicist said this:

For the Patriots to blame a change in temperature for 15% lower-pressures, requires balls to be inflated with 125-degree air.

Deflating 1-2 PSI out of the football with a needle takes only a second or two.  Yeah he could have gone to the bathroom.  He could have also spent that time deflating footballs.

Maybe NE felt it would look better handing it over themselves than the investigation coming across it! Plausible denial again- he was just going to the toilet honestly they could claim!

Picking out 11 balls, adjusting them, hole up, getting the needle in, taking it out, repeating 11 times, in a confined space. You would need a good eye, steady hand, and nerves of steel. Still  sounds ropey to me......

90 seconds doesn't seem like enough time to deflate 11 balls......is this a red herring....

You may be right. They say the tape shows 90 seconds of footage. These football were still in the Patriots possession for over two hours before the game. 1 1/2 minutes out of over 120 minutes. Something was done because the Colts footballs were fine when tested. All these so called excuses about the weather don't hold water just because it would have effected the Colts footballs the same. We may never know exactly how or who modified the Patriots footballs but the Patriots organization had possession of both sets.

I'm not debating this, I've just not come across the info. Do we know that they had access to the balls for an hour and a half?

The refs held the balls until 10min before kickoff

but for someone who's had plenty of experience, 7.5 seconds per footballis plenty of time. Grab, rotate, needle in, needle out. No need to remove footballs.

Easy.  Have one of these?  Cakewalk.  I'll bet NFL equipment is even better-

pressureBleed_zpsxvizlsvo.png

I'll be he was antsy by ball #12 and pulled the plug early before leaving the 'hidden aea' to deliver the footballs.  Thus the 11 out of twelve down the same, the last not quite as much...  These equipment guys handle them and do this all the time. it's their job.  They're the ones to set the game balls before delivery to officials.

This is like Mission Impossible. Good morning Mr. Belichick .... This gauge will self destruct in five seconds, good luck ....

I've seen on these forums that they use digits pressure gauges. Needs confirmation, but I wouldn't at all be surprised.

This the last comment from you phony. Ignore list for you. Go away.

Actually, if all protocol was followed, he is correct.  Here is the way it is supposed to go pre game-

"So the competition committee said, ‘We’re going to let the quarterbacks determine which footballs they want, practice with them all week, do what you want with them, as long as the football is not overly scuffed up. Then submit that ball to the officials, and the officials can tell if they’d want to use it for a game, and then they’ll stick a gauge into it and check the weight. Once they do that, that ball has met the requirements, and they put them in a bag, and they stay in that room with them, that locker room, until they leave to go to the field about 10 minutes before kickoff."

"The equipment manager will bring a bag of 12 or 24 footballs — it depends on the weather. The backup balls they’ll keep in the locker room or the replay room during the game. But those footballs come directly from each equipment manager in a bag, and once they go into the officials’ locker room, nobody has access to them except for the officials. So nobody can sneak in there and let the air out or put air in or do anything. There’s usually a security guard in there, so the footballs sit in the officials’ locker room for two hours until they go out onto the field"

"They have a gauge and they have to check every football. It’s usually given to the youngest or newest member of the crew — it’s almost like a rite of passage into the NFL. During the playoffs, it’s usually an alternate official, so it’s a veteran official that does it. I would not even question whether they did or not. It’s just something you do, like putting your pants on or getting ready for the game. They’re required to check the air. I don’t even question whether Walt and his crew did that."

So the ball boy gets them 10 minutes before kickoff.  But he's not supposed to got do 'his business' on the trip from the officials locker room to the teams sidelines.  Very suspicious.

Me putting BlacknGold on ignore is not about this article. Besides 9o seconds is enough time to deflate 11 balls with the right gauges.

I don't think a lot of people grasp just how long 90 seconds actually is.  I used to work in radio, and 90 seconds can be an eternity.

Sit and look at an analog clock and watch 90 seconds go by.  It's not that hard to imagine this could be done in that amount of time.

I was listening to Peter King and he said one of the reasons that the NFL is taking so much time is this investigation is going much deeper than the 11 underinflated footballs involved in the Colts game. The NFL is looking at the whole season and maybe earlier than that. Also they have tons of e-mails and other things to sort out. This could be a lot more deeper than some of us were thinking. He said this could take weeks to complete so I guess we will just have to wait and see. On a personal note I will not discuss, debate or argue with any Patriot fans who chime in on the Colts forum about any of this. In my opinion there is something to this. It don't take a rocket scientist to figure out that something fishy has been going on with the Patriots. I have a gut feeling the Colts-Patriot game is just the beginning. Once again I make this comment as a personal opinion.

then things could get VERY interesting in the coming weeks.

perhaps those in the know on the Patriots know their goose is cooked so they're trying to get this one last Super Bowl before the proverbial sledgehammer possible drops.

My sentiments, exactly.

I too have heard that there are several investigations going on right now and that it has to do with more than just the deflated balls at the afccg.    It will be interesting to hear what these other allegations / investigations turn out to be.

Everyone seems to be focused on the idea that the balls might have been deflated in that bathroom, who's to say that the balls that left that bathroom are the same one's that went in?  I understand that the balls are marked by the official that approves them, but from what I've heard they seem to always mark them the same way.  I also believe that this is the third time the Patriots played this year with that head referee, so they would likely be familiar with his mark.  With that said it's not out of the question that they could have replicated his mark on different balls that were prepared ahead of time.  Also not out of the question that they could have had the balls from the other two games he reffed that already had his mark on them that they switched with.

I don't doubt that at all.  I think that other teams or players probably know the Pats have been doing this for a while.  But, it just has never been that big of a deal, so why tattle.

Then, the Pats go bush-league with the concealing-who-is-eligible formations during the drive with the Ravens.  Harbaugh, Ozzie, Pagano and Grigson decide to call out the Pats on the illegal balls.  An eye for an eye so to speak. I'll bet the deflated footballs never would have been an issue is the Pats didn't go bush-league against the Ravens.

Right back at ya Bill
