Someone pull this guy aside and tell him to hang it up before he ends up like a vegetable. What Welker is doing isn't courageous, it's just stupid.

I wonder if the Broncos organization (coaching staff and players) are pressuring him to get back out onto the field as quickly as possible?

If I was in his shoes I would hope my family and friends would be encouraging and pressuring me to retire, that money and fame doesn't bring happiness and doesn't make the man.

It isn't the Bronco's coach's choice he has to pass the concussion protocol before he can play

There are basically four components: the baseline cognitive test, a rehab program, the independent neurologist, and the team physician. A player may pass most of the criteria, but he will not be cleared until he passes all of it.

I am not sure showing up for practice means much. He has had more than a couple concussions the last one kept him out 3 wks. I would say it is 50/50

I agree with the other poster Wes might want to think about hanging them up after this year

"IF" the NFL was serious about concussions they would by rule make the player sit out an entire season after one concussion, with pay of course.  The brain needs more time to heel other than 2 or 3 weeks after a concussion.

This is smarter for the NFL and player too...

1.) It prevents the player or reduces the chances and odds that the player gets alzheimer's in the long term.

2.) Saves the NFL hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits.

I shake my head whenever I hear: "he's been cleared to play"  and just two weeks ago was laid out unconscious with a concussion.

The frequency of a repeat concussion happens quicker with contact once the first BIG one happens, which was against the Chiefs for Welker last year. If I am the Broncos GM, I'd rest him till the end of the bye week and let him play after week 4. It is more important to have Welker as the season goes on, instead of right off the bat.

Well, he went an offseason without contact and as soon as he got his first semblance of real contact to the head, the concussion happened. It is only a matter of time, it is not IF, it is only about WHEN with repeat concussions, based on all that I have read.

But if I had to bet, he sits out game 1 and comes back game 2 vs the Chiefs at home.

Still not cleared for contact but did show up at practice. I would be surprised if he plays Sunday night.

He was throwing with Manning at last Thursday's exhibition game/

they wont even attempt to clear him until Wednesday or Thursday...//I'd bet money he plays

But you probably wouldn't..You know that, right?

You don't heal from a concussion.

I don't think their is any conclusive evidence to support this claim

The players that have come forth with the NFL lawsuit said they were in pain everyday and had issues with light as well. For sure it is a case by case basis but for he is the danger zone. I really hope Denver proceeds cautiously with him.

There are many players that also have zero effects from multiple concussions.

Probably every player in the sixties had multiple concussions. The equipment used was far inferior to that worn now. Mike Golic who played on the eighties has said he was sure he had multiple concussions but they weren't classified as such even then.

How does that prove they don't live without pain? Golic has said he lives with pain. Howie Long said he has a tough time getting out of bed every day. Phil Simms once said "there is pain in life and then there is football pain."

Shoulder pain, knee pain, back pain Ofcourse. We were talking about effects from concussions. Migrans, anxiety issues, parkinsons disease have all been possible long term effects of concussions. Not all players that have had concussions have these types of issues

I know from my own personal experiences with Wrestling and 2 overseas deployments, in which I have sustained well over 5 concussions just from wrestling in high school plus a few more from the deployments, that I deal with many of the lasting effects.  Sensitivity to light, eyes going in and out of focus, high pitched ringing, random headaches that literally side line you for a day...

I can only assume that many NFL players experience the same after effects.

Just my 2 cents on the topic.

The vast majority do and certainty for a guy like Welker who has had a severe concussion (KC game) and now two follow up ones, he is in the danger zone.

Seriously, Welker should be banned. Three concussions already and the season has not started. If the league will ban for life any player convicted of spouasal assault twice then "self assault" should also be grounds for banishment. You know what the future may hold for Welker and it is not pretty.
