Has anyone considered Lamar Jackson? (merge)

Yeah I just don’t see it happening because too much not Colts like stuff would have to happen.  Ballard would have to part with two first round picks at least (why would the Ravens take less than what it would cost to sign him when they don’t want to trade him?).  Then the Colts would have to give him a contract that is going financially handicap them.  Those are things I just don’t see Ballard doing when he can just draft a QB at 4 and have him on the cheap for four or five years.

I think when this is all said and done he’s going to end up playing for the Ravens on the tag or sitting out.

Bucky brooks just said on JMV he expects Lamar to eventually sign back with ravens.

Doing due diligence with the QB in the draft and Lamar is smart. Doesn’t mean they are really serious about doing it.

Just wait Irsay has yet to talk lol. If Ballard broke the internet just wait until Irsay talks.

That will be an interesting interview.  He could cool it down if he has a mind to.

Yeah I think sooner or later he’s going to realize no one is going to give him the contract he wants but the ravens will give him the most money and that will be it.

Probably the most likely outcome.  It sure is going to be tough watching this team for the next few years and keeping our fingers crossed we drafted the right guy.   I feel bad for the city.  Seeing all of those empty seats will be hard to look at.  Hope the team and city can handle it.

Im down with getting Lamar if it can be done on a favorable contract structure. I prefer the draft but if they decide Lamar i wont be too upset.

You aren’t getting him on a favorable contract structure that’s the whole issue he’s having with the Ravens.  He’s not going to do for someone else what he won’t do for them.

The Colts will be fine.  They have survived much worse things than a rookie QB who may or may not be the answer.

The thing is Lamar has been unhappy with the Ravens because they haven’t gotten him high level skill players to work with. If he lands here his skill players will be even worse. How’s that going to turn out I wonder?….

Our wrs are much better than the ravens. Just dont have a qb that can take advantage of them. Woods can be as good as andrews in the redzone and catching the football.

If we get him im sure they felt like it was something we could deal with. Theres a reason theres an offer sheet. We can put on the table what wed like to see in the deal structure. Up to the Ravens and Lamar to meet our request. Its whatever both sides agree upon. Im sure there are things they can do to create a deal structure that works for both parties. If not then we can just move on to the draft. We dont have to have him.

If he is that unhappy with the ravens he might be willing to do that for another team

I followed the team from Baltimore to Indy.  I will follow them if they move again.  Empty seats are a serious matter.  Not to be taken lightly.  Hope you’re right.

I feel history has shown us great WRs produce no matter who plays at QB. Sure their numbers might dive a bit, but they still show why they are great. Ours just haven’t. Pittman has been good, but not great and last year he was average. That’s not what we need in my opinion especially when we might have to pay him $20m/year.

There is a reason WR go to die with ravens and want out.

So Lamar's career year wasn't an aberration, his numbers Are decinding, as is his Availability.

Hurts is Ascending, and offers more balance in how he will beat you.

Lamar WAS a freak show, kinda like Cam Newton. I'm very sorry  Cleveland made dumazz's out of themselves, i worry not one second Irsay will.

The NFL is a Not For Long league. Mahomes' backyard ball was a thing, he made out handsomely early on but then teams started doubling Tyreek Hill and forced him to check down and he didn't. Got burnt in 2020 in SB vs Bucs and in 2021 AFCCG vs Bengals. 2020, a big part was losing his tackles. However, as time went on, he started to learn to beat teams from within the pocket as witnessed this year in Year 5 of starting. But the team was far more talented on the pass catching front until 2022.

Lamar, he had this awesome O-line with Marshall Yanda and his FB, and Ingram and him set the league on fire in 2019. Then Yanda retired, then Ronnie Stanley, his left tackle was in and out with injury and the Ravens' OL were bottom half in both 2020 and 2021 before Stanley came back fully in 2022 to make them a Top 5 unit again. Hurts is the "Johnny Come Lately New Kid In Town" flavor of the recent year, just like Lamar was after the 2019 season. Lots of things need to go right in the NFL for a QB to have a very good year. Great OL (Hurts), Great pass catchers (Hurts), Great supporting cast on D (Hurts-Lamar is a push). The 2019 season, Lamar still didn't have elite pass catchers but his run game and OL operated at a high level that he could pull it off. You have to sometimes dig deeper for your answers. It is not just "either this or that" when so many variables are involved.

The biggest difference was Hurts was a 65% passer in college while Lamar was 57%, so if you look at it objectively, Lamar is the one that has made the biggest transition to the NFL.  So, bottom line is, no one knows if Hurts will continue ascending or Lamar will continue declining. As long as it is a contract that protects the Colts, that is the only situation I want the Colts to pursue Lamar in the context of.

Do you put all black QBs in this bucket or just these five?

Why is it my fault that the fans and the media only overrate the black dual threat QBs and not the white ones?  If a white one would holdout like DW, Wilson (sort of) and now Jackson (cordially delivered) for hundreds of millions of dollars, I'd say they were overrated too.

Whomever thinks these black dual threat QBs are so great, also seems to gladly stereotype the small white ones as being incapable, unathletic, and have weak arms.  Even though objectively Ehlinger, Bennett, and probably Purdy have better arms than Lamar, Hurts, and probably Young.

Hopefully when the systemic bias against small white dual threat QBs is reigned in, they will have an equal opportunity to be overrated just like the black ones are now.

The NFL turned a profit in 2020 with most of their games played in front of completely empty stadiums.  The Colts will be fine

I disagree completely

Our RB when healthy is best in the NFL

Pitt didnt have anyone to get him the ball

I saw enough of Pierce to know that he will a good pro

Our TE room is not as good though

This is tough. He is intriguing. Young

MVP QBs rarely become available like this… Is he going to want that major guaranteed money still after all this trade stuff? I can’t imagine the Ravens will let him out the door without major compensation. Could be a long process like what the Jets are dealing with to get Rodgers out of Green Bay.

I’m not 100% sold on JT. He’s closer to Peyton Hillis than an Adrian Peterson currently. He’s had one good year so far.

Great WRs don’t need a great QB to produce though. What are the odds of Pittman turning out great in his 4th year? He is what he will be now. I don’t think he’ll take a jump to great, but I’ll happily eat my words if I’m words.

My point exactly.  If he truly is one, why wouldn’t the Ravens give him what he wants?  And more importantly, if they won’t, why should we?

Hint…it starts with an “in” and ends with “juries”.

I am still in the camp of drafting a rookie. But I’m trying to be open to this idea since the smoke is there.

They’re willing too. They could have used the exclusive and put this to bed but they’ve chosen not too

They probably assumed that:

A - No one would meet their demands

B - Info wouldn’t be leaked that he requested a trade

C - That any offer submitted they could match

So they were hoping a team would overplay their hand.

Maybe but if you have a true sure thing , you’re not gonna take that chance and you’re gonna tag him

Anybody who is talking pro-Jackson seem to forget that he wants a contract that guarantees at least $130M ?

Jackson doesn't care about the Ravens getting two first round picks.  That's only the first hurdle LJ faces, the big hurdle is why any team would want to guarantee more money than the Ravens would?

Even if LJ sits out and the Ravens accept only a first rounder, the other team still needs to guarantee more money than the Ravens already denied.

Yeah he wouldn’t say they have ruled out Lamar. Then said they might still trade to 3. Or might stay at 4 or move back lol.

Because nobody can say at this point what Ballard needs to do.

If Levis is still on the board when the Colts pick, that is who they will pick.  They may trade up to 3 to do it, and my guess is that AZ has been flagged to notify Ballard if someone tries to move up.

Stroud could have been the pick, but he's likely gone by 3 and is not part of the strategery at this point.

And if Levis is off the board by the time Ballard can pick...like to HOU....I'm not sold that he's taking Young or Richardson at 4.

So at this point, Ballard can't say anything because he doesn't really know what's going to happen,  If it happens to fall in a way that causes Ballard to do something he told us now he likely wouldn't do, then he looks like a liar.

So?  Who cares what the Ravens won’t do.  If you guarantee more money and that is enough to get a deal done then hooray we have ourselves a new star quarterback.

Also, forgoing a rookie first round QB to instead sign Lamar would look a lot like forgoing a 1st round QB to sign Rivers or trade for Wentz....the things that points to what got Frank fired and put Ballard on the hot seat to begin with.

No matter if you think that Lamar is a better long term option than Rivers or Wentz, the Colts have gone down that road twice (forgoing Love and Herbert) and I don't see it happening again.

Despite what the talking heads say, if you look at recent QB moves, the Colts are probably one of the worst teams as being a fit for Lamar.

    • I'm good with picking up the option. I kind of agree a little with Ballard that there is more upside to Paye on passing downs. He is a good athlete and he has improved each season. Important that he says healthy, he was quite a raw prospect coming out of college and was then injured alot in his first 2 seasons in the NFL. So I can see why Ballard would like him around for another 2 years to see how much they can improve him. He's also an excellent run defender, which is important to note, especially in that LDE role.
    • Doug….   I’ve just read your latest two posts.   And as has been the recent trend, I don’t understand your logic.   So I’ve got a long post to respond to your long post.    So let me ask you an important question:     Have you noticed in the last month or so that I am responding to your posts very slowly?   I’m taking 8, 10, even 12 hours to respond.    I’m doing it deliberately.  I don’t want us to be going back and forth and back and forth while we’re both awake.  I’m trying to slow the pace of communication so things don’t get heated.  So I’m not trying to pick a fight,  I’m trying to AVOID a fight.   As to your two posts….   I think your memory is playing tricks with you.  Ballard said “let’s take the wide receiver” this draft for Mitchell.  His quote in 2022 after the Colts had no pick in the first round was this…. “Tomorrow,  wide receiver, tight end, tackle, and safety or corner.”   What did Ballard do?   He took those 4 positions in that order.  But not until he had traded DOWN from 35 to 53 for Pierce.   That was Reich’s personal pick.  Ballard was confident the players would be there and they were.   Not possible if everyone has same info as you assert.    Do you remember the 2019 draft when Ballard took Rock, Benagu, Campbell, and Okereke on Day 2,  that was the first year of the popular video series and the most memorable sound was Frank going around the war room high fiving everyone yelling “Four for Four!  Four for Four!”   Those were the guys Frank wanted, those were the guys Ballard got him.   Not possible if every team sees things the same.    The story of the 21 draft was the Colts picking 21.  And Ballard telling the scouts he had a good feeling that Paye, who the Colts ranked 10th on their board, would fall to the Colts.   And he did.   Ballard thought Dayo would fall to pick 54, and he said he likely would’ve taken Dayo at 21 if Paye had been taken.  Ballard was right again.   And again, not possible if everyone sees things the same.    Historically speaking…. In 2012, Seattle had Russell Wilson ranked THIRD on their board.  But they waited to draft him at pick 75 because they thought at 5’10” and 5/8ths,  RW would still be there.  And he was.   That wouldn’t be possible if everyone had mostly similar rankings as you believe.  As for Reimann:  picked 77.  You talk about his value as a left tackle.  Yet he lasted to pick 77.   Any other team could’ve taken him before the Colts did.   They didn’t.  Yet you think it has nothing to do with his age.  I don’t understand the logic you use to reject the age argument.   I don’t see an alternative view that makes sense.    All of these are examples of teams seeing the same thing differently.  They value things differently.  When asked recently, Steichen said he valued quickness in a wide receiver.  For other teams they might value speed, or precision route running.   Every team has its own identity based on what they value.    GMs are different.  Head coaches are different.  Scouts are different.   They are NOT working with the same information.  Every team has their own Big Board and the differences are big, not small.  32 teams, 32 very very different looking boards.     I’m 67.  I have literally studied the draft for more than 50 years.   The draft has always been a passion of mine, even before I became a TV sports producer at age 23.   I’m not making this up.     This post could be longer, but I think it’s gone long enough.  There was much to talk about.   Thanks for reading.
    • Next year imagine the Colts will be looking at 2 QBs.  My top dual threat/mobile pocket passers are Jalen Milroe, Grayson McCall, and KJ Jefferson.   For offensive lineman got to love LT Kelvin Banks Jr who managed to hold his own versus Will Anderson a few years ago and LG Donovan Jackson.  Jackson has generated all-conference honors the past two seasons; Nelson's contract expires at the end of 2026 where he will be 30 years old.   So far for running backs I like Treveyon Henderson, DJ Giddens, and Kyle Monangai.  Each back knows how to secure the rock.  Last I checked both Dalvin Cook and Damien Harris are still free agents that would improve our roster.   Not sure if we need a top talented wide receiver early but am interested in Tre Harris and Ricky White.  While De'Corian Clark been compared to Alec Pierce and made Bruce Feldman's Freak list.  Still need to see where his high school numbers would have ranked compared to this year's draft class.     Plenty of defensive lineman to like in the next draft and probably one of the best groups coming out.   Edge Princely Umanmielen - one I feel is a fit for the Colts Edge Jack Sawyer is another stud that I want to pair with Latu and Paye Edge James Pearce Jr. DT 3-tech Tyleik Williams Edge/DL Mykel Willaims - as a freshman led all FBS true freshman edge defenders LDT Kenneth Grant NT/DT Walter Nolan Edge Dani Dennis-Sutton Edge Landon Jackson Edge Patrick Payton Edge Tyler Baron DL Shermar Turner - been one of the more disruptive DTs in the SEC.  Has a quick first step and body control to shoot the gaps. NT/DT Tonka Hemingway Edge Jasheen Davis NT/DT Alfred Collins. Linebackers got an interesting group of prospects to keep an eye on from the following: WLB Jack Kiser WLB Danny Stutsman LB Dasan McCullough MLB/OLB Jay Higgins LB/Edge Collin Oliver LB Eugene Asante SLB/Edge Khordae Sydnor LB Keaten Wade LB/Edge Steve Linton WLB Eric Gentry Read where some say this is a very weak safety class but got a few that seem to have potential.  This draft class I noticed more excel in press/man more than zone but still very capable of playing both.  Some of the defensive backs I like so far are: LCB Will Johnson CB Benjamin Morrison CB Ricardo Hallman SS Kevin Winston Jr - Blackmon signed a 1-year deal but only a 2% missed tackle rate and ranked 2nd among all safeties in 2023. SS Xavier Nwankpa - 4.39s-forty speed reminds me of Nick Cross FS Rod Moore - excellent 4.40s-forty speed FS Hunter Wohler - slower 4.52s-forty speed, if can improve his speed might be better than Rod Moore CB Tacario Davis CB Maxwell Hairston FS Jahdae Barron CB Jacobee Bryant CB Jordan Hancock CB Denver Harris SS Keon Sabb CB Malik Spencer CB Aydan White CB Tommi Hill - In 2023 had an outstanding QB rating when targeted of 38.6.  With another solid year Hill could move up the draft boards. Still on the lookout of those players not listed on the primary draft boards that the Colts always seem to find hidden gems to draft.
    • This is the list of Retired Colts Numbers. Peyton Manning — No. 18 Johnny Unitas — No. 19 Buddy Young — No. 22 Lenny Moore — No. 24 Art Donovan — No. 70 Jim Parker — No. 77 Raymond Berry — No. 82 Gino Marchetti — No. 89
    • a lot of the recent super bowl winners had game changing tight ends bowers would have been a nice addition but i like who we got, imo an a plus draft
