Subtract the $8.5 for the Big 3

Who's the big 3?

If referring to Odum, Cox and Pascal

They are already figured into the $39m.

Mack cost us a net of $1.2m after he takes a top 51 spot and a player drops off.

We are setting around $36-$40m after Mack signing.

Man, took a shower and was like, hell yeah 18 new post. Something happened....

sad arrested development GIF

Its pretty much been what I expected. Re-sign as many of our own as possible and maybe get a couple mid tier FAs.

Our own:

Pascal

Cox

Odum

Mack

Stallworth

Dulin

Also:(back from Covid opt out)

Tell III

Moore

Need to finish off TY, Rhodes and Houston though hopefully

If we can bring those 3 back for $24m or under we would still have a little money to play with. Very possible, especially with how contracts are playing out right now.

Waiver claim on DL from Texans, probably not a top 51 salary right now.

Will say $40m left at moment.(estimate)

Draft picks that count top 51(3) amount to $4.2m - $2.4m(players falling off of top 51)

$1.8m top 51 cap hit.

$38m left.

-$24m (3) resigns above

$14m-$15m top 51

Riley Rieff $8m

Would leave us with $6-$7m left and around 80-81 players on roster. A few UDFA and another couple cheap FAs.

Edit:(×2)

Oh yeah and traded for hopefully our QB for next 5-7yrs.

And the money needed to extend Leonard, Smith and Hines?   Asking for a friend.   :peek:

Everyone is forgetting Patmon, who I think will get a shot this year. He was raw, but worked with Rivers and now is working with Wentz. He is tall, young and fast and continues to learn under Pittman, who considers him like a little brother.

No one is forgetting Patmon.  We’re just listing a projected top-4.

Patmon is trying to be WR5.   If he can do more — great.  Everyone would be thrilled.  But no one should expect anything more than WR5.   We’re all looking forward to seeing what he can do.  The Colts kept him in the 53 roster for good reason.   Now we want to see it.

The writer projected extensions for Leonard, Smith and Hines to be $8.5 mill toward the 2021 cap.   I called them the Big 3.

We don’t HAVE to extend them this year. Plus I believe all of them would meet the RFA rules and this can be tendered next offseason if needed. If we want them here, they’ll be here.

Makes more sense.

Well, I wouldn't give Hines that extension personally. At least not paying him that much more this year.

As far as those 3 extensions on that coltscap site, I could see the Smith and Leonard playing out that way. I also agree on no extension for Q this year.

So lets readjust a little.

If we resign TY, Rhodes and Houston for $24m - $2.4m(players dropping under top 51 = $21.6.

So lets take that from our estimated ($38m)

$16.6

-$7.2m Rieff($8m-$800k) top 51

$9.4m

- $8.5m big 3 extensions.

Not saying this what hapoens or we cut it this close. Just made the extensions fit in.

We aren’t signing anyone big that’s forsure. Hopefully we can at least sign Houston and Rhodes. Confused to frank saying we are looking to sign a playmaker at TE but yet doesn’t sign Henry or Jonnu.. Ertz isn’t even that much of a playmaker anymore at his age so can’t see where we will add a TE playmaker..

We do have to re-sign them this year.

Thats what you do with your best players.   To nit do it would be hugely disrespectful and go against everything Ballard stands for.

I asked about those three because of a post saying it’s not going to be a problem to re-sign them this year that I didn’t find convincing.  Then w87r made another post showing how we have enough money to sign who we want, except he DIDN’T include money for Leonard, Smith and Hines.

So lots of confusion.

Given that Ballard asks Frank what and who he wants and then tries to get it for him (Wentz) id say you’re going to be unhappy.

Given that Frank is the head coach his job is to learn how to call and fit the personel to his play calls. Don't think he needs to be up front talking about things that are Ballards to discuss with press. If Ballard sent him outnthen this is on CB.

First, it is neither lazy, nor tired, because that implies the information is easy to understand and readily available.  Neither of which are true.   There is one handful of fans here who understand this material - one hand — with a few fingers left over.

So I don’t see this as easy at all.  And I see nothing lazy or tired about not fully understanding this.   None of us are Cap Specialists who work for an NFL team, we’re not supposed to understand the complexity of this.

Sorry to get so triggered.  Sorry for the very long response.

First off , As you said I feel that we agree more often than not so I actually enjoy when someone I usually agree w has another perspective. So please don’t apologize whatsoever.

my main point is along the lines of what I bolded of your reply which is that most of our fans don’t understand the cap and the way we usually structure contracts and how easy it can be to manipulate them if wanted. It’s why we see so many “how can team x sign player y when they have no cap room” lol

and currently a majority of fans and even nfl insiders are feeding us the narrative about the extensions being why we aren’t spending. Which only makes sense if they’re doing the extensions now this off-season instead of spending cap on improving the roster. Which may happen. But it hasn’t as of yet.

i was pointing out how this article takes us down the path of how the colts could structure those extensions in line w small signing bonuses and big roster bonuses (a colts staple) that leaves us in decent cap shape now and next year.

my biggest concern is that like you pointed out, we have expensive positions to fill and as more and more of the expensive guys that would fill those positions go away, it is clear we will not be spending big $ to fill them.

if we aren’t then this shows a greater concern to me which is simply that our team itself would not be getting better at a time when the afc as a whole is.

I mentioned it’s early because we can still add 3-5 key contributors at key positions w this depressed market.

it will be a bigger concern if we come out of free agency w the same team as last year minus a LT and minus decent edge players and we leave it all up to the draft to fix that.

I have faith that won’t be the case. But some of the bargains today were guys we definitely could have used.

Frank Reich is the Head Coach.  A good part of his job is communicating with the media about what the team is trying to do.  It’s that way with all 32 head coaches.   It’s part of the job description.

Just because there are parts of Frank that you don’t like, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t talk to the media.  It’s his job.

3yr $34.5m

Some of the recent signings have been bargains. This doesn’t feel like one.

$11.5M a year is a hefty price especially after the initial wave.

there’s still hope for all these WRs to get their big paydays

What other HCs are out front talking about the teams potential plans in FA? You are correct in that I have some parts of Frank I don't like.

Frank is literally the mouthpiece for the Colts. Ballard only addresses the media certain times of the year and when he deems necessary. Jim Irsay is restricted by anyone with a brain in the organization for obvious reasons in relation to speaking to the media... Frank is the mouthpiece.
