What team in the nfl has a abundance of good safeties

Maybe we can trade back for Bethea from SF lol. Jk but they do seem to have 3 capable starters in Bethea, Reid, and now Ward the rookie. If we could convince them to give up Reid for a 2nd Id be all for it.

No way they would trade a first round pick who has exceeded expectations for a late second rounder.

They don't have any extras in SF.  Ward is their big nickel safety - their really all starters.

Maybe we can trade Patrick Willis for a 5th and Vernon Davis for a conditional 7th while we're at it.

I would not be opposed to doing the opposite of what Tony Dungy did. He took Cato June, a former safety and made him a WLB, playing as a coverage LB. The thing was he couldn't defend the run worth anything.

Now, take a lighter WLB who excels in coverage and teach him the safety position so that he is not a tweener at LB. Kam Chancellor is that prototypical lighter WLB body type who is playing safety, IMO. Another option is taking a bigger CB, maybe Purifoy or someone else and make him a safety and see how he excels. If our coach really excels with secondary coaching with his staff, it is not out of the realm of possibility.

However, there are guys like Dewey McDonald who can be given a chance with the first team to see what he can do. Lets not forget, Bethea was a 6th round pick from Howard University that Polian found. Maybe Dewey will shine if given the chance. I am not ready to push the panic button yet.

I think Pagano and Grigs understand they also have the option of moving Purifoy to safety as well.  He's got all the traits to be effective at that position as well.  I don't think it would be bad at all to have Purifoy and Mcdonald as backups behind Landry and Adams.

Yup, mostly playing inside nickel, from what I've seen this preseason. And doing a decent job of it. I thought he was a weird pick for them, after signing Bethea, but they're getting all three of them on the field together. And with Bethea having a concussion, now Ward can play two spots for a while. But I think Bethea will be okay in short order.

Holy Smokes that is a funny post. Normally I would suspect that this is an attempt at humor but I have seen your body of work so I fear it is a serious thought.

There really are no options outside of hoping one of the current players steps up and that isn't likely.  I'm sure other teams have had good years without a decent safety.  I can't think of any but I'm sure they exist.

I don't know why it's unlikely that one of our current players steps up this season. I don't expect any of them to be star players, but there are always under the radar producers in the NFL. We've had quite a few in Indy, as recently as Jerrell Freeman. Pendleton did a good job as a rotational lineman last year. Josh Gordy was good at corner when he got a chance.

If we're looking for "decent" safety play, I think we'll be fine.

Concussion numbers would be at an all time high.

Or maybe an all-time low -- I doubt players would be leading with their heads or launching themselves like human missiles if they didn't have a helmet on -- heck we might see some fundamental 'wrap him up' tackling in the league.

I really like Purifoy for this reason and his ability to play STs -- seems like he's stayed out of trouble since he's been a Colt -- if he keeps it up I fully expect him to make our 53 man roster and make an impact this year.  He just seems like a play-maker where ever he is on the field.

Bethea is also getting up there in age -- I imagine (assuming Bethea comes back from his concussion) Ward will be their nickel guy this year and maybe next year as he develops and learns from Bethea -- as Bethea continues aging I think Ward will step into the starting role and Bethea's role will diminish.

I think you are 100% correct -- as Pagano said the other day, the better our front 7 does, the easier it is for the secondary.  This is the best front 7 we have had in a long time (definitely the best of the Grigs/Pagano era), so we shouldn't really need our safeties to be superstars, if our front 7 does their job stuffing the run and rushing the passer we should be just fine on the back end.
