There's nothing wrong with that 'plan', IF you draft well.

Grigson didn't do that.

For the life of me, I don't know why he spent so much effort on 'project' guys.

Maybe he just didn't have a full understanding of what it took to make the 'plan' work.

Green may have been the death of him.

Well that is an interesting and worrisome development if true.

Throws a wrench into the works about how people will sign with the Colts because of Luck and they want to win...

No question the AFC South is moving toward parity...

Not sure what his plans are at safety but I would like to see Darius Butler brought back.  I'll give Ballard my trust whatever his plan is, but I think D Butler has a place here.

Ballard has my trust as of right now. I really think he has a good understanding of what needs to be done and how to go about doing it.

So far Ballard has:

- Traded with the Patriots.

- Signed a Pats OLB.

- Signed a Vrabel/Crennel LB out of the Patriot system.

- Scheduled a visit with another Pats LB.

- Signed a left-footed punter.

Romo is less durable than Samuel L Jackson in Unbreakable

Yet we couldn't get near and made the QB nobody wants (Osweiler!) look All-Pro.  Romo may look All-World unless we find a way to get in other teams backfield on a consistent basis.

Ask Denver and Oakland. Pretty sure Denver spent a lot of money on players(Talib, Ware, TJ Ward, DRC main ones) and won a SB. The reason Jacksonville, Cleveland, Philly, and the other teams haven't done much is because they haven't had a star franchise QB. Those stats are irrelevant. Pats spent 16 million on Revis. He played lights out. They won a SB. Raiders signed Kelsie Osmelee(top guard), Michael Crabtree, Bruce Irvin(top pass rusher), Sean Smith(one of top corners available) while still retaining their own FA's. Raiders were SB favorites for many people before Carr injury. Broncos, Pats, and Raiders all had/have franchise QB's. Look at the positives too. I think people don't realize how much two or three top players can make for a team. I agree the best way to build is through the draft, but with the way Grigson has screwed us over, signing some good free agents would help.

Look

Its all about signing the RIGHT free agents, regardless of cost. You say that having a franchise qb means you can go all in free agency, but what has that done for the saints? They sign top 5 free agents every year yet are in salary cap hell and have 3 consecutive losing seasons to show for it. The chargers are another team who went all in on free agents last yr (hayward, mebane, benjamin) and didnt make the playoffs either. Cardinals have brought in big free agents (chandler jones, veldheer, iupati, evan mathis) over the last few yrs and had a worse record than us last year. You can try and argue that arizona was bad due to a decline from palmer, but they were a top 10 ranked offense last season so obviously he is doing well enough.

A few great players didnt help their chances, so it is obviously not a given that a few will help ours. Can they? Its possible, but not probable. And for what they do to our cap situation if they dont pan out, it isnt worth the risk. As ballard said in his press conference, you have to know they will be effective if you wanna pay them that much. Hes doing his due diligence and deciding who those players are. Trust the process, give him some time, we will see some good players start coming in. If he hasnt done anything by june, then we can start freaking out.

Fair enough. I agree that you do have to sign the right free agents! If we sign all of our free agents to 2 or 3 year deals, it will not have an affect on "building through the draft." We have a few players to resign in the next two year(Mewhort, Moncrief, Swoope(maybe), Davis, Geathers, Anderson), but none of our own are going to demand top player except maybe Geathers. I'm not saying let's sign 4 top free agents. Just 1 or 2 first tier free agents. Poe and Hightower for example would make me estatic. I'm tired of average players. We need playmakers. Players on defense that can make a difference in a ball game.

Agreed. Like I said though, it doesnt make sense to worry about it right now. Ballard is going through his process and deciding which guys are going to be hits. He wants to 100% sure these guys will be hits and I feel like that is worth waiting for. I have faith that if we trust the process that he is going through we will see results. Like I said, if nothing happens by June, then we freak out. haha

Yeah. I agree with those statements. I get freaked out when all the other teams are getting these "great" free agents and we are sitting back and doing nothing. Especially when two of the teams with the most cap space are in our division. I have no doubt in two years we will be up there with the best of them, I just want to be there competing for a SB next season. I believe it's quite possible we can do it IF we make the right moves(Hence why I'm stressing free agency and this offseason so much).

wow.  I can't think of a time like this.  Looks like they're gearing up to make one more Superbowl run before Brady retires in the next 2-3 years?

    • The Matt Gay hate is a convenient outlet for Chris Ballard hate. Which explains why it's mostly unreasonable.   However, I don't understand why they're putting him out there right now. He's evidently hurt, and he needs some time to get right.
    • Speaking of Baker:   I've been skeptical that Bryce Young can overcome the marks against him, so I'm not exactly waiting for him to turn it on. But I was skeptical about Baker as well, for different reasons. He never looked as ineffective and incapable as Bryce has looked so far, but he's a good example of a player who a) was in a bad situation, and b) still had to get better at QBing.
    • Well, I thought the Olubi kid showed some solid play making ability with good tackling so i'm surprised they pushed rookie Carlies, who missed a fair amount of time, ahead of him so quickly. So one could say the position has been addressed by drafting a LB each of the last 2 seasons with guys our people like.  Carlies did play 46 snaps Sunday. Like our other Gus led LB's he didn't seem to be where he needed to be when needed. But what the hey, that becomes much more likely when you have 2-3 seasons under your belt, With a d-line playing well in front of you.     It wouldn't surprise me at all if Williams throws for 250+ with 3 touchdowns. The little devil on my shoulder tells me it would be a good thing, just another nail in Gus's coffin. And of course that is a sad place to be. lol
    • If the past two seasons have shown anything, it's that you can never fully write off a QB based off of limited information. The NFL journey can be a long one.    Geno Smith, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold... All written off as failures just a few years ago.    @Superman and I have spoken for years on how the surrounding organization plays as much of a role in the success of a QB as traits and abilities.
    • Flutie had a great career.  He was awesome in the CFL.  Maybe that's what Young should do for a year or two.
