I Never Thought That I'd Say This But...

I've seen past posts where people have said we need to get rid of Andrew Luck and I thought that it was a stupid idea, but after today's game I have reconsidered. Not because I think that Luck isn't a good quarterback, but for these reasons. Because the Colts are paying so much for him, we don't have the money for enough QUALITY players on defense or offense. Look at the teams we have lost to. Most of them have quarterbacks with nowhere near the caliber of Luck, but their offensive lines and their defense seem to outplay us handily.

Maybe it's time to consider the quality of the players we have on both sides of the ball, rather than having a having the highest paid quarterback in the league, as Mr. Irsay likes to say. Even Brady can,t win games by himself. Just sayin'...What are you guys thoughts about this?

It has been thoroughly debunked that Luck's contract is what's preventing Grigson from building a good defense.  It has more to do with Grigson's inability to evaluate talent and overall incompetence.

Debunked? I've not seen nor heard where it's been debunked. Look at the talent or lack thereof we have on this team. Old guys, guys who have injury histories and young unproven guys. Sure there have been a few bad picks by Grigs, but just watch Luck being killed and our defense being torched and missing tackles left and right. Quality players don't perform like this and you have to pay to get quality players.

The money is and has been there to build a good team around Luck. Grigson just doesn't know how to evaluate talent and he's wasted money on old or bad players. He seems obsessed with finding that diamond in the rough.

He's amazingly consistent, though.  He's equally bad at the draft(Werner, Dorsett, etc., etc.), free agency(Cole, RJF, Toler, etc.), trades(Richardson, Hughes) and re-signings(Allen).

I'm with everyone else that thinks this is really stupid. The only reason I feel compelled to reply is no one mentions the 29 million in dead money if we traded him.

This may be true, but if we don't keep him protected he may not be around for long! Again, I never said that Luck was bad, you guys need to re-read my original post.

It's not so much about Luck, but the reason the team as a whole is so inconsistent, undisciplined and seem to be outplayed by everybody, ie Jacksonville. We need better players, this is obvious. The question is how can we do it and still keep Luck?

Everyone has told you like 40 times we will have money our GM is just stupid and can't find talent to save his life. replace him with someone that knows what an actual talented young player looks like and we will be fine.

At this time, there are only 24 posts in this thread, not 40, so don't be a knucklehead. I just threw this topic out for a discussion! To hear different POVs.

Be like most teams.  Once in a while, draft in the top ten.  Grigson has never had that luxury after the 2-14 season since the team went 11-5 the next year.  Last year was the worst year for the Colts in the Grigson era, and the pick was only as high as #18.

Ya get rid of the only guy holding this team together that's really brilliant if not for luck this team has no wins this season at all and we are never in most of the games we lost.

This fan base needs some adderal sometimes. Some people have the attention span of a gnat. Last week: "Luck is phenominal, without him we'd be nowhere." This week: "Luck is so overrated, we need to geg rid of him".

What I'm really starting to get ticked off about is everytime this team wins most people on here say Luck is one of the best QB's in the league and when we lose they say he stinks he is terrible we need to get rid of him that is pathetic. Luck isn't the reason why this team is 3-5 we are 3-5 because of terrible coaching, dysfunctional front office, and multiple draft mistakes.

Hey Guys,

I like Luck, but this team has had this defensive problem for many years. It was the same way when Peyton was here. We've had mediocre defenses at best. All the time, our quarterbacks were the highest paid in the league and they had to have weapons, which left the defense lacking.

There are good teams who are consistently in the playoffs that don't pay their quarterbacks as much. I just think we need to give some love to the defense.

At least when Peyton was here, they protected him. If we keep going the way we are Luck will get killed. We cannot expect him to win games by himself! Will you be satisfied if he gets a career ending injury? I would rather see him with another team before this happens.

Trading Luck for a wealth of potential spearheaded by Grigson and coached down by Pagano would probably make this team worse than it already is, ....

They may have a 20-25th ranked D with a minimal rushing game and a QB incapable of doing anything lol.

I agree. I an no fan of Grigs and Paganos work...

I could see it now, Pagano "It was so hard to let go of a fierce competitor in Luck but we got a wealth of warriors man, these guys are samnauri ninjas made of steel, they're robots."

Loses first 6 games, "Man it's so hard to win in the NFL, we just gotta keep on chipping away, grinding and get better."

Luck helps take his respective new team deep into the playoffs, ........

The reason the team is awful now is because Grigson is completely inept.  He doesn't know how to draft.  He doesn't know which free agents to sign.  It has nothing to do with Luck's contract.  Luck deserves the money he got paid.  Instead of paying for good free agents, Grigson paid for guys like Andre Johnson, Trent Cole and DQ.  He drafted guys like Hugh Thornton.  He completely wasted tons of cap space.  To suggest Luck's contract is the reason the team is in its current state is as inaccurate as one can get

Luck is no more than a good qb as he refuses to reduce his flaws. This is year five and he still needs work. The Colts are a seriously flawed team from the owner on down. They packed the stadium today only to fall on their faces. 41 yards total offense the first quarter, four sacks, dropped balls and a continuous flow of no defense. Why bother to play starters next week against the Packers?

No offense man but do you honestly believe with all the guys we HAVE signed with all the enormous cap space we have had the past 5 years we could do anything with the money we are giving Luck. Luck hasn't played "consistently" well the last two years. He had had some great stretches but really not much of a full game starting from the afc championship game til now but he is by far....by far the most talented and by far the best player we have at their respective position. Outside of Vontae, TY, and mewhort (minus our pro bowl kickers) everyone else is decent at best to downright awful. There is far far to much to upgrade and even Andrews money wouldn't scratch the surface here. You don't weaken your only strenghth on your team and get better. Luck can play better and must. He has to step up his game between the ears. Get into better plays read the defense and know where the openings will before snap and get rid of the ball faster. He basically needs to take that next step and we have been waiting a year and a half to see it...hopefully he will get some help either with coaches or someone (maybe we bring in Peyton in the offseason to tutor him). Andrew has all the tools he just needs some help from his teammates but definitely from this staff to make the leap.

I believe it's some of the problem along with the offensive "weapons" they bought for him, like they did for Peyton. As I said earlier, the Colts have had defensive problems for many years. They spend most of the money on offense. This is a fact.

To the OP, the Broncos just won a Superbowl while paying big dollars to Manning so it can clearly be done. The Oakland Raiders of all teams are building a good roster around David Carr yet Grigson hasn't done the same for Luck. Only 7 QB's were drafted last year and only the ones that went 1 and 2 are playing right now. The draft this year has produced Wentz and Prescott but who could have predicted Prescott. This is why Houston went out and paid $72 million for Osweiler because that is what he is worth. Alex Smith is getting paid similar money. To summarize, Luck is a bargain unless you know of a way to pick in the top 2 every 5 years after your QB's rookie deal runs out.

Trent Richardson, TY Hilton, Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Frank Gore were all acquired before Luck got his new contract.  It has nothing to do with Luck getting paid and everything to do with Grigson not knowing how to build a roster

    • Does a reporter bear any responsibility about what he includes in his pieces? Sourced or not? Is everything a source tell you printable? Is everything worth printing? BTW I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, I just wonder if there are any ethical considerations a reporter might have when reporting on this type of touchy subject, especially when some of those anonymous scouts might have vested interest in a player getting drafted higher or lower than currently projected?
    • Again….   McGinn didn’t do the damage to Mitchell.  The scouts did.     And there are columnists like McGinn at every major paper.  Their job is to gather info and report it, whether it’s popular or not.    Let me turn this around.  Hypothetically, a few years from now if Mitchell doesn’t pan out and he’s moody and difficult to deal with and he’s a bust, then the scouts will have been proven correct.  And people here will say McGinn’s column was spot on.   Another person who should’ve handled his business better is Mitchell himself.  He’s been living with this since he was roughly 16.   And scouts said he interviewed badly with them.   Even Mitchell admits it.     I don’t think this is as black and white as it seems to you.      To be clear…. I love Mitchell.  Glad we drafted him.  I’ve said several times that Ballard defending him draft night was smart and scored points with the kid.  Now he comes out and says that exact thing.  He appreciates that Ballard defended him so hard and he wants to pay the Colts and Ballard back by being the best player he can be.
    • I’d say those teams that lost had worse defenses compared to the winners. That’s not to say that their defenses were bad, they just weren’t as clutch in the big moment.    To me, defense matters a whole lot when you need a stop or a momentum change.    Look at all of the star studded power offense teams of the last decade who were incapable of winning it all.
    • Oops that’s my mistake. Yeah I completely missed that. My apologies.   But yeah he’s one I would keep an eye on for us next year. Him and Will Johnson. It’s a little early to be talking about what the Colts would do in the draft, but I would put money on this being the year Ballard takes a DB high. I could also see him go D-Line again. I love college football and watch as much of it as I can, but I’ll be paying attention to a lot of the guys you listed at those positions. Last season I watched a lot of the teams that had the elite receivers (Washington, Texas, LSU, FSU, etc…).   I’m also getting ready to fire my draft podcasts I listen to back up and look at summer scouting. I’ll come back for some discussions as I get info as I always enjoy talking prospects with you.
    • The issue some may have is the kind of journalism where Bob McGinn created an article that affected a young man's career based solely upon anonymous sources.   I'm confident you will reply back referring to your experience as a journalist with some version of 'without anonymous sources, there would be no journalism'. I value reading your insight about how sports are covered and I don't disagree that anonymous sources can be important. Its fair for anonymous sources to give background about things they are not comfortable saying out loud.   However, I'll add that perhaps its also fair for Bob McGinn to use his anonymous sources to help him find the story and craft the story, but if nobody will put their name on it then Bob McGinn needs to dig deeper before he launches infotainment into the world. He can't take back the damage he did to AD Mitchell.
