Winners And Losers In The Bears Game.

MTC

Recommended Posts

Winners:

Andrew Luck - duh

Andre Johnson - The timing between Luck and AJ looks great. Loved the 2 point conversion.

Josh Robinson - our future starting RB

Lance Louis - shockingly, our best o-lineman of the night (IMO)

Erik Walden - probably the biggest winner of the night. Provided tons of pressure and did well against the run.

Losers:

Matt Hasselbeck and Bryan Bennett  - lots of inaccurate throws/bad decisions.

Special Teams - beginning kick with McAfee. Poor returning

Jerrell Freeman - horrible in pass coverage. Junior Sylvestre looked better.

Bjoern Werner - still not impressing against 2s and 3s.

Jack Mewhort - his worst performance as a Colt. Struggled against McPhee.

I wanna add Carter to this list but the passes he got were terrible. Luckily there's really not much talent behind him or his roster spot would be in trouble. He just hasn't got a fair shot yet. He's played well when Luck was the QB in practice

You basically got them all. Mine are:

Winners:

Louis (Looking surprisingly good)

Walden (^^^^)

Parry, Kerr, Pendleton (Impressing, both manning the middle and throwing centers around)

Sylvestre (Tackling machine)

AJ (Already has chemistry with Andrew)

Goode (Again, surprising. Playing very well with the 2s)

Langford (Showing he's not only a pass rush specialist, working well with Jones)

Robinson (Bowling ball, always falls forward)

Losers:

Mewhort (Disappointing, McPhee owned him today)

Carter (Only gets time with Hasselbeck/Bennett)

Hasselbeck, Bennet (Can't seem to make any throw)

Toler (Being picked on, not impressing)

Ballard, Tipton (somewhat, small sample size but nothing special, Tipton seems like he's already lost his spot)

First team D bent but didn't break. I counted three drops that cost first downs.

I was at the game but need to re-watch. Agree about Mewhort. Did Holmes lose his job already or were they just working Harrson out with the ones?

Rotation. Holmes even ran with the 2's some

Holmes started the game though

Also shout out to "Training Camp Hero" Duron Carter as an honorable mention to the losers list.

I doubt he makes the 53 man roster.

He'll make it. He had one target, which was a ball thrown behind him. Who threw it? Bennett.

Hard to make an impact when you're constantly playing with scrubs at o-line and a putrid QB. Get Duron some time with the ones like he did in training camp, and then he'll make plays.

Slyvestre a looser? Why? He looked great, notched 8 tackles and was instinctive and read runs IMO.

He blew 2 tackles on both Langford long runs

Him & Cam Johnson & Colt Anderson on the backend

Don't look at the stats, most of his tackles were downfield

Biggest loser is Mewhort at RT. Good learning experience though. Sometimes you gottake deal with these bigger dudes. I'd still like a 1st thru 3rd rounder spent on an OT next year to kick him back to OG, but the experience can only help in our versatility driven roster.

Winners:

1) 1st team defense improved (Jones, Langford looked better than last game)

2) Andrew Luck. Considering what he had to deal with at o-line, he did well. AJ and TY both had drops, which made it even more difficult for Andrew.

3) JRob. 13 car for 61yd. 4.7avg.

Losers:

1) Backup QBs. Can we please get a quality veteran backup QB next year AND a new youngster. Abomination.

2) Starting o-line. It's going to be a long season it that kind of play continues. Don't think it will though. They will get better, especially Mewhort. But they are the losers of the day.

3) Werner and Newsome. Not impressed with either. Newsome I have high hopes for, but he hasn't delivered so far this preseason.

Any pass thrown by Bennett should honestly not be taken seriously at this point, Unless he comes out and pretty much has an All Pro like performance in game three when he comes in against 3rd stringers I'd even say one of our PS spots would be better served not wasting a spot on him:

Winners

1.Walden

2.Pendleton

3.Hughes

4.Robinson

5.Hilton despite the drop

6.Varga on kick return

7.Luck

Losers

1.If you were not on the winners list you were pretty much a loser tonight....Bennett gives me hope I can try out for the 3rd string QB job

glad to see others saw Lance Louis stood his ground, and in my opinion outplayed the other linemen as much criticism as he gets for why is he starting? he outplayed everyone else on the line which is not a good thing it's bad but still he wasn't great but he was good.

Sheldon Price and Junior Sylvestre Impressed me tonight 2 players that i've been pulling for wished i could of seen Varga run the ball but he had two good kick returns.Clayton Geathers is showing improvement just between these first two preseason games he's gonna be a great addition to this team.

I'm still thinking Bryan Bennett has good potential but a lot of rookie mistakes. also Hasselbeck looked worse in my opinion i think we need to see a lot of improvement so we can feel secure with our back-up QB situation.

.... Price is on my winner list. What are you talking about?

And no. Sylvestre blew 2 plays that resulted in those Langford runs

apologies i corrected myself on that he was out of position for the one big run for moving him to rush the passer that's more on the coaches than him also at least he figured out how to wrap up a tackle overall between these 2 games he's been impressive much more than Muamba or others

I thought Kerr played well.

Meh I don't he was bad but against 2's and especially 3's he should be able to pretty much dominate and he didn't except 1-2 flashes, He has of alot acceleration out of his stance when he don't think and just reacts to the snap but play recognition is clearly not coming to him yet very consistently

Didn't get a chance to watch the game but I'm really disappointed to hear Mewhort got owned by McPhee. I do believe Mewhort is a guy that could be a real plus player for years on the right side - the big question in my mind is whether it's at RT or is he really more of a RG? I hope the mistakes he was making were things it looks like he can clean up on at least.

Guys i thought played well:

Lance: stood firm his entire time

Gore: first look, played with good power

Robinson: 2nd week in a row love him

Kerr: had penetration, and looked like a beast beating his man, just needs to watch where the ball is.

K. Langford: great penetration, and tacked well.

S0-so:

P&A: when together, these two seem to feed off each other.

Good: another false start, and gave up a sack -in fairness was the TE's guy and he was too far to get a hand on him- but otherwise played solid.

The rest:

I didn't name certain players who played because of no brainers.

Hilton makes everything look effortless. I think he had to be taken serious when you talk about the top 5 receivers In the game. His name has to be somewhere in there. That DB he toasted and naked on for that one pass was heated which is why he got that penalty. Hilton starting to get under peoples skin now lol.

And I also think that Dorsett Is legit. Even when people play off him, they'll just throw him the ball quick and let him use his speed to do the rest. That guy is going to be special.

Mewhort, Ulrick John & Reitz: Terrible Games collectively!

Duron Carter: Terrible decision making on returns and poor receiving

Toler & Others: Bad tackling fundamentals

Edge Setters: No one setting edge well

Newsome & Werner looked terrible

Hasslebeck and Bennett HOPELESS

Penalties all game: Unacceptable and poor coaching of discipline and focus

Linebacker Play was awful all night. (Except Syvestre, though he had some bad moments too along with some good)

Johnson & Gore looked good in a couple plays each

Henry Anderson & Parry looked solid stuffing line

Kendall Lankford had some good moments, Art Jones was invisible.

Robinson is the star of the draft class so far

D'joun improved but still had poor tackling, same for Geathers whose tackles came WAY downfield after being run over.

O-Line play was decent for run game but disastrous for the passing game 1st, 2nd and 3rd team.  All our RT's were just pitiful tonight.  (Mewhort, Reitz, John).  We better be watching the wire because we face some BRUTAL front d-lines this season....

Positive? Rookie Draft Class looked pretty good overall, certainly the best class since 2012.  Better than many of the veterans.  UDFA's not so much however. We do not have depth anywhere but on D-Line (Anderson, Parry).  Our receiver depth isn't as stout as we may have thought.... we really have 4 guys... we should re-sign Reggie and cut everyone but Hilton, Johnson, Moncrief and Dorsett.  Our RB's are not as deep either.  Ballard looked tentative.  Tipton looked like TRich.   So we have 3 Gore, Robinson and Heron.

Biggest problems: Bad Coaching! Bad Fundamentals and onfield decision making and this team has NO DISCIPLINE in terms of penalties (I started O-Line 4 years in HS and 4 years in College and never had a single penalty... it isn't that hard to go on snap count and not hold...really... learn some technique and DISCIPLINE!).  Mewhort is a guard apparently, not an NFL RT.  He can't handle elite or even good edge rushing it appears.  Costanzo struggled but kept his guy OFF Luck...

Not sure why everyone is saying Johnson is a winner. Yes, he caught the Two pointer but dropped an easy pass. Average, at best.

TY is our #1, no question.

TY dropped the easy one tonight, not AJ (I don't recall a drop from him at all). And, who questioned whether TY was our #1?

I'd add Carter to the losers list. Two games and he's been a none factor and other than returns (where he hasn't exactly been Hester) he's been in there late in mop up time. For a kid who did so well in practice I was hoping to see more out of him at this point and I wouldn't be shocked to see them keep someone like Whslen over him right now.
