JJ Watt: Six years, $100m (merge)

The Texans are only few pieces away from becoming a playoff contender. I believe they will address all of their holes next year's draft.

We will see how Clowney does in the regular season, he might be a good candidate for a huge deal in 2-3 years time depending how he performs and if he becomes a regular pro bowler.

The way contracts are set up in the NFL most players only get guaranteed the first 3 years, after that they can be cut anytime and often are forced to restructure after the 3rd year.  There's no guaranteed contracts in the NFL like they have in MLB or NBA. Texans know damn well they aren't keeping Watts around for another 6 or 7 years unless he takes a pay cut.

WOW !!!!  100 mill with 51 mill guaranteed. Getting paid like a QB.

Texans signed LE J.J. Watt to a six-year, $100 million extension, including $51.8 million guaranteed.

The new contract technically makes Watt the highest paid defender in league history, surpassing Bills DE Mario Williams' six-year, $96 million deal. Watt was already under Texans control through 2015 at a severely underpriced $8.88 million across two years, however, and it appears this extension was simply tacked onto the back end of his rookie deal. Watt spoke publicly about his desire for a long-term commitment from Houston in mid-August, which may have sparked discussions. Watt, 25, has 36.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles across his first three NFL seasons to go with an incredible 27 pass breakups, earning him the nickname "J.J. Swatt." Pro Football Focus has graded Watt as its No. 1 overall 3-4 defensive end in back-to-back years. He's arguably -- or perhaps inarguably -- the best young player in football, regardless of position.

Watt is only 25 years old. His contract may be restructured but I feel pretty confident that Watt will be with the Texans for the entirety of his contract.

I know that the salary cap has been going up but the Texans might've backed themselves into a corner. If Clowney dominates and demands a huge contract then Houston could potentially be on the hook for two defensive players are the cost of 30 million plus.

That's quite unfounded. The cap is going up significantly in coming years, so Watt's $17m/year will be manageable. And he is very plainly the best defensive player in the league, probably a top 15 player overall, and his salary reflects that.

I merged them all, and now I don't see the other two threads that were merged in. Weird. We're looking into it...

I think something happened to the other threads, it's saying 'page not found' for me.

Some dimwit merged them into the wrong thread. That person has been fired...

Should be fixed now.

This is far better for the Texans than competing for him on the open market.  I think he would easily get 19M per year.

I've always sort of wondered why players don't do this more often.  My only guess is that having that big signing bonus now as opposed to 2 years from now is important cause you never know when a blown ACL could wreak your value on the open market.

6 year $100M. $51M guaranteed.

Good deal.

An excellent deal. Worth every penny. Proud of you JJ! Now go tear that QB over there to shreds except Andrew Luck. Just drop him gently on the ground. Thanks. LOL!

It's nice to know that the only time your nose gets bloody is on the football field instead of during tension negotiations. I don't know who is happier JJ or his agent.

Was really hoping he would get off the texans to a better team lol

I realize that my question is slightly off topic, but has JJ commented on his new QB Ryan Mallet from the NE Patriots? It's definitely a huge upgrade. That what JJ needs a solid QB who can generate about 24 points a game.

If Mallet can do that, watch Watt take over games like a possessed mad man just like he did at UW-Madison. A beautiful thing to watch.

Yes, on the surface over $51 million is a staggering lump of cash, but what you need to remember is that JJ always shows up on game day reeking havoc. He never disappears; His presence is always felt on the field & his motor or relentless pursuit of the QB or the ball carrier never ever stops. You can't stop him, you can't contain him, you can only slow him down temporarily. Eventually, he will break free, collapse the pocket, & kill drives dead in their tracks or he will free other lineup up that cannot all be accounted for or neutralized.

Like Rocky Balboa's trainer Mick said about Clubber Lang in "Rocky III" "He's a wrecking machine." I'd pay top dollar for any defensive player like JJ who can bust a game wide open easy. He's not quite Lawrence Taylor, but in this era JJ is the next best thing IMO.

If ever a non QB deserved QB level money it's JJ Watt.

I don't know if the league has ever seen a more dominate defensive lineman when you consider his all around abilities at stopping the run, rushing the passer, and knocking down the ball.

Nice post V2004!

What I love about JJ is this: Off the field in ordinary clothes, he is 1 of the nicest guy's you will ever meet. But have him put on pads & a helmet & he transforms into another lifeform that you never wanna go toe to toe in a dark alley or directly across from you. I have witnessed this jekyll and hyde transformation myself at Camp Randall in WI more times than I can count.

The best pass rushers have that: Manufactured intensity that they can flip on & off consistently.

    • They seemed really high on Goncalves. Obviously they traded up for him, but sometimes in past draft videos, you see Ballard satisfied to make a pick just because he is highest on their board. But with Goncalves, its clear they were really pro-active in in ensure they took him.
    • Some things that made an impression on me:   - we did try to move up. I wonder for who? Last year Arizona put up a similar video after the draft, I would love to see if they show the Colts calling them for 4 this year...    - we DID meet with Laiatu. Seems like it was at the combine, probably one of those quick 15 minute ones and he probably had tons of them and didn't remember this specific one. I love that as a throwaway question as he was walking out they asked him what he's going to run... he said in the 4.6s ... and he went out and did it. There is something about a prospect who promises something and then hours later goes out and delivers on that promise. Especially in athletic sense since he wasn't one of those prospects that had athleticism as his calling card. On the rest of the video... I like him... he looks like a genuine guy who loves every step of this process and enjoys it. Love how excited Partridge was too... what a vote of confidence for him as a new coach not just on this team but in the league - give him the best pass-rusher in the draft to work with.    - everything in the bit about AD Mitchell was about his talent. "Way too talented to pass up here"... Every single word we got from scouts, coaches, FO members... everything was about his talent. Not a word about the character/attitude stuff. Not one. Now it's obvious to me they probably cut off some of that stuff, but interesting to see what the Colts want to portray about the player. So yeah... with AD it's all about the talent. For whatever it's worth, he looked like a pretty chill dude in the interview they showed. Part of the rumors that were floating around was that his interview with one team was so bad that within the first minute of the interview they knew they wouldn't be drafting him.   - Matt Goncalvez seems to be the favorite player of the Colts in this draft. Kind of like Khari was a few years ago. "culture fit" is probably the best descriptor here from the video. They love his personality and they love his attitude. One of the best calls/reactions to getting drafted you will ever see/hear... kind of reminiscent with the Downs one last year. I don't know where exactly he will fit on the field... but he will fit somewhere. They will give him chances... he has all the good will of that coaching staff and that FO.    - Bortolini - impressed in the workout. IMO he will be understudy to Kelly... the new Pinter I guess? Probably won't start right away, but he has clear role IMO.   - They seem very optimistic about Carlies ability to translate to linebacker. Looking at some of those highlights they showed... he does look like EJ Speed or Shaq or Okereke... with his speed in pursuit. They mentioned him potentially covering TEs. I can see it.    - Loved seeing Ballard giving Jamie Moore the chance to make the call to the guy he's been fighting for throughout this whole draft season(Jaylin Simpson). Good gesture by Ballard, bet it was a great feeling for Moore.    - In general I love all those calls and videos of the reactions by the prospects. Seeing young prospects achieve one of the big goals of their lives and starting their paths to even bigger things, is awesome. Love it.    - "That's not a prank call, is it?"
    • Consensus?  Huh?   I have no idea what that means?   I offered MY opinion.  That’s all.      But I can’t keep up with you.  You just wrote a very long post about how 32 teams have very similar looking Big Boards.   If I had $1 for every time in 13 years I’ve posted that there are 32 teams and 32 completely different looking big boards, I’d be filthy RICH!!     In any given year 32 teams may all agree on the top player, but that the further you get away from the first pick the big boards look very very different.   The exact opposite of what you speculated.  I didn’t agree with one sentence of what you posted here.  You’re entitled to whatever opinion you want but it’s not supported by anything.      I’ve pretty much disagreed with everything you’ve written since the draft started.  But that works to your advantage.  I couldn’t possibly point out all the flaws, so I’ll try to be selective.      Here’s one argument you’ve repeated the last two years.   That Ballard lucked into getting both Woods and Raimann and that he wasn’t even smart enough to realize that Raimann was the better player.  What gets me is that I’ve explained the reasoning to you multiple times and I’ve read other posters explain it to you multiple times.   And we all say the same thing:  That Ballard calculated correctly that because Raimann was 24 and would turn 25 during the season, he stood a better chance of lasting to pick 77 while Woods was taken at 73.   But you keep posting the negative Ballard viewpoint as if NO ONE has explained it to you.  I think it’s both insulting and rude.   It’s what you do when you can’t handle an argument, you just avoid it.  Ballard was smart and right and not only do you not acknowledge it, you try to belittle him every time.    There is sooo much more I could discuss with you but this post is enough.  I’ll be curious if you’ll even respond.
    • Great episode!  Gotta couple notes here I took:   - confirms we were indeed looking to trade up.  My gut tells me it was definitely for one of the big 3 WRs or bowers based off Ballard remark “Let’s try and if it doesn’t happen, we’ll let the draft play itself out.” (Paraphrased).     - they were interested in Latu but didn’t think he’d be there.  I don’t think anyone thought he’d be there at 15 lol.  Don’t know where Latu was at on our board but he was obviously toward the top.  Also can tell he was toward the top based on Ballard reaction “we got the best pass rusher in the entire draft”   - I’m guessing WR was definitely on the top of our board.  Ballard mentioned wanting speed at the position.  AD falling into his lap couldn’t have played out any better.  Also, good to see Reggie happy about his new toys in AD and Gould.     - No side remarks or mentions of any corners.  I’m going to stick with what I said before the draft and that corner was never on our radar.  What also makes me believe that more than ever is that we had the option to choose between the top 2 corners and even in later rounds other corners and we chose not to.  I’ve said it before, Ballard is straightforward.  If he says “I like what we have” he’s not drafting it unless there’s a player that you can’t miss on.  If he says “this draft is deep in ___” you can bet that’s what he has his eyes on and will most likely double dip.  He said he likes our corners, didn’t draft one.  He said this draft was deep in receivers and OL, we drafted 2 of each.
    • That is a very good point, and if I am not mistaken, Turner profiled more as a 3/4 OLB by many scouts.
