Samson Ebukam Performance

Well, we've talked about Jonathan Taylor.  And we've talked about Anthony Richardson.  And the Offensive Line.  And Shane Steichen.  And Deion Jackson.  And Alec Pierce.

But we haven't devoted much time to Samson Ebukam, and how he performed.  Or didn't.

According to Pro Football Reference he started the game and had

0 sacks

0 quarterback knockdowns

0 quarterback hurries

2 tackles

1 tackles for loss

0 passes defended, while being thrown at 1 time

And a 54.6 PFF rating, ranking 82nd out of 106.

And this from the blind side DE position.

Positively Banogu-esque.

Perhaps he should have chosen a different jersey number.

I know, I know, it's only been one game.  But, he didn't get off to much of a start.

I watched him pretty close. He held his edge well, i thought he was solid. His LT counterpart graded lower than Kelly.

This while the rest of our front whooped on them good.

Yeah, his play might not have shown up on the stat sheet, but he held his edge and allowed others to make plays I believe.

I think its worth remembering that Ebukam isn't a sack artist. He's a great run defender that also has been good at pressuring the QB. We also played Lawrence, who tends to be an extremely tough QB to sack. He's mobile and has an incredibly fast time to throw. I'd prefer to get a larger sample size before scrutinizing Ebukam's play too much.

Man Banogu wishes he could have a stat line as good as two tackles and one tackle for loss.

For the record I get your point just making fun of Banogu.

Dayo gave him a breather in the 2nd half and decided to give up the edge for the chance I guess to jump on the pile. The RB cut it outside for a very long run if not a TD. Incredibly sad watching a 3rd year player do something so ridiculous. This is Turay stuff. The light isn't on.

Dayo coming along was the best breath of fresh air I saw on the D.

Ebukam, if he takes on strong side TEs or any side OL 1-on-1, he will get washed out vs the run if the OL gets any hold of him, IMO.

So temper the expectations on that front. He’s more of a hustle type of DE.

he had a couple good tackles on the edge, but what else did you see to say that?

If you didn't see his play as solid what words could educate you?

For those that thought he was solid, their LT had a PFF 68 grade.

And we got hurt bad when Dayo gave him a break. If one noticed.

I think it's important to take the line play as a whole into account as well as his role on the team. If Sam's performance held the edge to redirect a back or stop a roll out or keep Buck or someone else from getting double or triple teamed then he was an absolute success. It's rare for a team to have a Cowboy vs Giants defensive performance where everyone with a pulse gets a sack and TFL's.

look, the "week 1, things are getting going" is only gonna be an excuse for so long.

Ebukam should've at least got 1 pressure, and he didn't. that's concerning

Not all ends are pass rushers.  There is a reason Ebukam comes out on passing downs.  He’s there to set the edge and help shut down the run.

But... it's literally week 1 bro? However, you're right that "week 1" would not be an excuse in week 8.

yeah, im not saying im ready to cut him or anything like that, but he did have zero pressures, all im saying is that excuse only gonna last so long.

today should give us a better idea. he isn't a pure pass rusher, but he should be able to get a pressure here or there.
