I don’t know where the separation struggle stuff comes from. Always “The area scouts” with no names attached. Don’t trust these articles.

Ballard said watching the tape that in the Alabama game Pierce was beating his man and open on so many plays. They just never got him the ball.

Then Offensive Rookie of the year!? Doubt that. At least there is a name there.

I saw no issues with Pierce getting separation in the film that I watched of him. In fact, I was surprised how open he was sometimes. In the NFL he will face the top defenders in the world on a weekly basis, but I still think he will be fine once he gets comfortable with the offense.

"With" Kwity Paye and not opposite Paye.  Kind of disappointing that our first two picks of the 2021 draft went for the same position.  And then we still had to trade for a pass rusher, and spend big dollars to replace the Corner we traded.  Its moves like this that make a rebuild take forever.

From everything I have read, the plan is to hopefully have Paye at the weak side and Dayo on the strong side on first downs and obvious run downs.  Then Yannick, who is being utilized as a pass rushing specialist, will come in on 3rd and obvious passing downs.  Then Paye would move back to the strong side and Dayo moves inside.

I think you’re going to be low.  Perhaps both total dollars, guaranteed money,  and in years.

It’s a good backup for Ryan. Sam hasn’t played a ounce of real nfl football and with this team as stacked as it is I think it would be a good move. Ryan has been durable but we can still role with Foles for a couple of games without losing a beat if he gets injured.

Question not directed at you personally because I agree we cant count on Sam as a backup but why do teams draft players like Sam in the first place? He's not good enough to start so he wont get game reps and the lack of reps wont make anyone confident in his ability to be a primary backup. Why not always pickup the castoff 1st-3rd round QB's as backups that failed as starters and use those picks on something else?

So the plan is to not have Yannick play 3 downs?   Like RYS did.

I agree with you. He needs to play to get experience but do they trust him with a team that is stacked if Ryan goes down. Not sure that is a wise move.

He was the 218th pick in the draft. How often are those players major contributors, at any position?

That is what it appears to be from what I have read.  Sorry, working right now and have little free time, or I would post links.  I believe the plan is to keep Yannick fresh and utilize Kwity and Dayo to their strengths, which is run defense, at this point.  I am really looking forward to seeing how this all shakes out as Lewis is in the mix as well.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that Bears OLB Robert Quinn is requesting a trade out of Chicago. Chicago is saying that they have no intention to deal Quinn, but reports like this will continue to heighten trade speculation. Several teams would have an interest in Quinn since he is coming off an 18.5 sack performance, 49 tackles, and four forced fumbles last season. Quinn also has a reasonably affordable $13 million salary. Should the Colts consider pursuing Quinn? We happen to know a few coaches in Chicago and this would send Quinn out of the NFC so the Bears would not face him often.

Ian Rapoport adds that Quinn is one of several veteran players being discussed as trade candidates around the league right now.

Or maybe now with Ngakoue, Paye, Dayo, Buckner, and Lewis we can have a real pass rush, with depth and fresh legs allowing for a solid rotation.

People don’t understand the difference Bradley is going to make.  He frees his pass rushers up to attack. Eberflus did not.  I look for the run defense to be not as good because he is going to let them be more aggressive going after the QB.

As someone who still has nightmares about routinely getting run gashed in the Dungy era, I hope Bradley does more game/opponent specific planning.  If Ngakoue is blindly screaming up the field, I know what will happen 3 games this year.  Vrabel and Belichick will run right at him for 4 quarters like it's Freeney in 2005.  You need to stop the pass, yes, but if you get run gashed and swept by Tennessee, you probably won't make the playoffs anyway.

Give him an accurate QB and he will be fine

He has enough speed and quickness to get a little separation .....

Have you noticed       The kid has great jumping ability......

We very much like Pittman, and his ability to win contested catches,

Pierce has a 4 inch better high jump.  at 40.5 inches

If you watch Pierce he seems to be able to use that ability to his advantage

I think he will surpass Pittman as the top receiver next year..... and maybe by the end of this year

I like the pick..... the kid is a brainiac as well..... he should pick up the offense much quicker than most

Thats pretty optimistic for his rookie season, and I hope youre right.

I dont think he is gonna have a ton of catches because I expect him to start a little slow, but I also think hes gonna make a lot of big plays, especially towards the latter half of the season. So I expect a really high ypc and a handful of touchdown catches, which would be a great start to his career.

I love guys who can go up and highpoint the football like Alec can. And you made a good point about him being able to use that to his advantage. How many times have you seen a big receiver go up over a smaller DB and come down with the pass, and then have a ton of room to run after the catch? I think thats gonna be how he makes his mark early on in his career and thats perfect for what we need from him right now. With that speed he is gonna be hard to run down in the open field.

I am not excited by the move either but if all goes according to plan Foles will never play a meaningful snap for the Colts.  I am not going to get outraged by a guy who is being signed hoping he never plays.

Matt Ryan is durable, but nothing goes according to plan. This is the NFL, where the unexpected happens. There's a very good chance Foles will play at some point if we sign him for a year. Asking a 37 year old QB to stay healthy for 17 games plus the playoffs is a tall task. Our O-Line is probably weaker with this starting five than before as well and that's with no injuries.

There's two issues with Foles to me. 1.) If he plays for an extended period of time, he's not good enough as is, but not bad enough to tank like Sam would for us. So it would actually hurt our chances of getting a franchise QB, and we can't keep Matt Ryan forever, he's 37 now. 2.) Foles is just the latest in another of Reichs QBs that he wants on the Colts. I'm tired of it. People say he'll do well with him as he has familarity. So does that mean anyone he doesn't have familarity with will be even worse? That's a valid question. If Reich had familarity with Wentz and he did that bad, considering their relationship, is Reich going to be just as bad or worse with Matt Ryan?

Sorry to get off subject. Just trying to show that there's really no upside to the Foles signing unless you believe he'll do what he did with the Eagles for us.

Of course anything can happen.... no one is a lock at the pro level, but Pierce with an accurate QB, can be deadly IMHO

I think for this year Foles is a great choice

Hopefully in the future, the back QB that would be developing to be the starter later on

Great point

We need someone that could win 50% or more of the games if the the starter was out

Foles is exactly that guy

As mentioned......  We DO need to get the next QB of the future on the roster

I hope that happens in 2023, in a class where there seem to be 2-3 Blue Chip prospects, and maybe 5 will be drafted in round 1

When it comes to starting QBs in the NFL more times than not it does go according to plan health wise.  Also, the Colts still have three pro-bowlers quality players and probably a future hall of famer on the line.  It’s not like they are going back to the days of Luck’s line here.

The reason it would work is because we maxed out the salary cap to trade for Gilmore...so yes, we added to the talent base.  My question was that if we use Ngakoue on a rotational basis, then we traded a three down player in RYS for a part time player in Ngakoue.   That trade comes out even only because we spent the money on a Corner after the fact.

We built the talent pool by spending to the cap....which is no different than what some people here have been advocating for a few years now.

Also, if Paye was drafted at 21 as a pass rusher, but ends up being a run playing DE primarily, its not out of the a ball park to start comparing him to Bjoern Werner who was taken at 24.

But Paye hasn't even started his second year yet, so that's premature.

I doubt Matt needs to get adjusted to a play book. No knock against you but I think with camp and practice he will catch on fast. When one is regarded as a top 25 qb of all time by espn and the nfl network, he doesn't need much help to a different playbook being he has played 14 years.

I think you’re  beating a dead horse.  It’s inevitable.  That said I’m glad we will have a veteran backup with this team.  I think the veterans on the team will feel the same way.  It tells the players that management believes this team can win it all and by spending and adding a veteran backup you shore up and add depth to the most important position on the team.  That says a lot for me.

Ryan in his 14 years as a Falcon has never played behind an OLine as good as the one he will play behind this year. Never. As a lifelong Falcons Fan I have been wanting him traded since 2018; NOT because he was bad, but because the Falcons just failed miserably at giving him protection. Yet he still managed to put up a 10 year streak of 4000+ yards, while being sacked 40+ times year after year. He threw for 3900+ yards last year while being sacked 47 times and having NO #1,2 or 3 receivers.

He very rarely had a game with less than 7 different players having at least one reception, and often had 9 or 10 per game. His leading receiver last year was the team’s #3 from the previous seasons, 2nd was rookie TE Pitts (both over 1000 yds) and 3rd was Cordarrelle Patterson with a Career high 567 yards.

He has played under 6 different offensive coordinators with the Falcons in 14 years, I think he will be a very pleasant surprise for Colts fans, as long as you don’t expect him to run the ball. I am excited for Matt Ryan and the Colts. May he now get the respect he never got in Atlanta.

Absolutely.  The slow start was in part due to the O--line's slow start.

Of course our standards have gone way up in recent years.  It's still much better than Ryan had in Atlanta and much better than we had in Indy for the previous 10-15 years.
