Not at 33

So true

What do you mean not at 33? Did you not just see Tom Brady win a Super Bowl at 43? The rules for the modern NFL are set up to protect the QB and with our O-Line we have the means to do it. You need to explain more than to say not at 33. I would agree if it were a running back that 33 is old but a 33 yr old QB is not old. Not by a longshot!

Ballard isn't gonna trade away multiple 1s anyway

That may be true, but since this thread was asking about our preference for QB since Rivers retired I thought I would share mine.

Just goes to show success could be found even at 21

Wouldn't it be hilarious if Colts drafted someone at 21 and they had a better overall career than Lawrence

Kind of like how Tom Brady was a 6th rounder and Ryan leaf was number 2 overall? Granted different years but the theory remains

Not sure about the exact details but have a feeling any team that would be a trade partner who want a longer contract than a FT one

unless maybe two teams each have a "problem" they just want to make go away?

clubs seem to be able to find "hidden" methods for making a lot of these issues disappear

It’s not that hard to figure out. What has Darnold done to earn the job.

I am not referring to whether or not Darnold has earned anything. I am surprised that anyone would assume that CB would bring in a high profile QB (yes, Darnold is an NFL starting QB), only to compete with a #3 QB......and have that be what he goes with for the season.

Possibly but I still think the receiving team would want a little security

@w87r @Superman

Do you guys have any financial details and/or rules on FT trades

It's simple. All the rules that apply to tagged players still apply, except the team that is trading for the player now has the player's rights.

The Jags tagged Yannick Ngakoue in March 2020, then traded him to the Vikings. Because they traded him after the deadline for extending his contract, he played out his one year contract (he was traded again to the Ravens).

If a tagged player is traded before the extension deadline (July 15 usually; it might have been extended in 2020), the team trading for the player can still sign him to an extension, if they reach terms. Or they can handle it the way the Colts did with Buckner and the Niners; he was never tagged, but he was on his fifth year option, and the Colts received permission to negotiate his extension and then agree to the trade. It's mechanically the same, except in Buckner's case, there was no extension deadline. Didn't matter because we did the extension right away.

The uncertainty for the new team, trading for a player that's not under contract, probably affects the trade compensation. But that can be navigated right up front. If the Cowboys tagged Dak again, a new team could offer them whatever trade compensation, and request permission to negotiate an extension prior to executing the trade. So when it's done, the trade and the extension happen together, and they have him under contract long term.

Agreed unless his OT/DE is there at 21 and might not be there later

Yeah I doubt we go DE in this draft, I’m thinking we address it in FA, But we are lucky that it’s a deep LT draft from what I’ve read so far.

edit: we’re  Lucky or good planning by the FO
