Let's be real, its not shocking, but it's strange to see them gone.

Yeah this is how I feel. Im not surprised at all. Just kind of caught off guard it happened all at once without warning.

I think its the right move but it is kind of sad as its the pretty much the icing on the cake of the house cleaning thats been going on.

I can't wait to hear how much under the cap we are.

I'm fine and even extremely pleased for the most part with all five of these cuts within the context of their individual circumstances and overall team circumstance. The only one I have the slightest reservation about is Addai - but that's only because I thought he would have been a good 3rd down back because of his versatility, per many old conversations here.

1/4th of it is gone on players playing elsewhere next year.. If it's in the 120million range.

But we can still sign a lot of free agents this year, we would just have to load up the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. years rather than this year. Am I correct in assuming that?

Can you calculate how much money we are saving in future years by cutting all of these players, including Manning?

Thats a lot of dead cap space money. It looks like they may be trying to position the team for 2013.

Next year is going to be a bonanza.

yeah, even before these cuts polian said on espn that the colts would have oodles of money in a couple years. draft strong and fill in some hole thru free agency this teams can be competing in a few.....

that was then this is now. fact is they haven't helped the team much the last couple years....

They helped a lot in 2010..that's just not true

..and its easy to cut for 100 reasons....the hard part is to acquire quality players

we need far more paole than we have draft choices..and we still dont have much cap room THIS SEASON

Can you update us on cap figures? It would be much appreciated.

My main concern about Grigson was his understanding of how to manage the cap. This bloodletting of the roster reminds me so much of what the great Joe Thomas did in 1972. I think Grigson gets it. The Colts aren't going anywhere in 2012 anyway, so get rid of all the players who won't be here to contribute in 2015, and confine the cap pain to this year. Just grit your teeth for 16 more games, and then watch the rebuilding gather speed in 2013 when we're 30mil under the cap, can trade our top-5 pick for two 1st rounders, and have more compensation picks. The first goal in this year's draft is to get more o-linemen and receivers to help Luck survive. Maybe we'll be able to get a third-rounder for Freeney.

Under the circumstances, I am puzzled as to why they bothered to re-sign Mathis, unless they intend to trade him.

This is indeed a wild ride. As 'Johnny' in the movie 'Airplane' said ( referencing the tv series 'The Big Valley' ): "Nick! Heath! Jared! There's a fire in the barn!"

its official now

The rebuilding of the Indianapolis Colts has reached an even higher level, with the team cutting linebacker Gary Brackett, running back Joseph Addai, tight end Dallas Clark and safety Melvin Bullitt.

The Colts confirmed the terminated contracts --- and the release of quarterback Curtis Painter --- in a news release.

True but you hope to use this coming year as growing period for Luck and Co. then build a good team for him the next couple of seasons. Just how the league works.

So, this is the new reality in Colts land. I was a little stunned by the cuts but upon further reflection, I can see why it makes sense going forward. All the players cut were either past their prime or would not be a key part of rebuilding. i believe next on the list are Donald Brown and Fili Moala.

It's going to be an interesting off season leading to the 2012 season.

clark and bullit missed huge chunks of that season. brackett and addai were banged up quite a bit.

and who cares how much cap room the colts have this season. they need to build a nice core of players thru the draft and then worry about free agency.

I loved Addai, but the fellas was just injured to often same with Bullitt, Brackett was overpaid and Clark had a terrible year. It's tough but not surprising. Freeney will probably be next since he seems not open to renegotiate.

Crazy epic rebuilding, they better have some kind of plan to bring in FA's and have a nice draft.

Its great to debate but what's their arguement for people to buy tickets..?

That's a tough sell
