Gavin Memorial Draft (Post Easter) Round 1 - Begins 4/11/2018

Recommended Posts

True but with that in mind we are restricted to this years draft and only four rounds.

It's fun to put yourself in the GMs shoes though.

They only way we could get the total experience is to have a keeper draft league from year to year like fantasy football.

I was thinking about that and I think it would just be too hard to manage.  People would drop out over time, we all have seasons in our lives where we're around alot and other times hardly at all.  Keeping track of trades and having them affected by real world trades that are more consequential in our draft than it would seem in real life.  For instance the trade for Cooks, all the sudden, your team doesn't have a first rounder and you didn't do anything to "lose" it.

@OffensivelyPC I will play Devil's Advocate with you. You mentioned something earlier that trades should be "realistic". Who determines what is realistic? We see head-scratching moves in the real draft all the time. Who would trade their whole draft for a RB in Ricky Williams or give up so much draft capital to pick one spot earlier as the Bears did?

Did you play in this Mock Draft two years ago? I traded Adrian Peterson to the Cowboys for their 2nd round pick. Most thought it was not realistic since they believed AP was worth a lot more, as he came off a year where he led the league in rushing yards. Being the Vikings "GM", I knew that his days were numbered and Jerry Jones was fond of AP. I thought I made off like a bandit but the other participants wanted to veto the trade, saying I should get a lot more. Thanks to 21isSuperman, it was allowed. As you see, Peterson has not been able to play much since 2015. So, the Browns GM (Solid Gold) may have a plan that we all may not be privy to.

Btw, with the 2nd round pick that I got for AP, I selected Hunter Henry. :)

To the bolded - that is why the draft picks went ahead as planned for Solid Gold. But then, everyone is entitled to their opinions and reactions, in agreement or disagreement for feedback on the picks. However, one cannot give opinions with the benefit of hindsight, only with what information is available at that time.

Even fantasy football trades are sometimes vetoed and I never understood it because there were willing partners to begin with for a trade to happen, even if it puts one team in a slightly more favorable position.

Vetoes are more of a safeguard for a completely unrealistic trade or exchange, as opposed to being a socialist vetting process to determine if both parties get equal benefits. At least, with purely draft picks, we have a trade value chart for reference. That is why players complicate things.

Oh, absolutely. This whole discussion just elicited memories of that trade proposal (AP for the #35 pick).

I also remember when Keanu Neal was the pick for the Colts. Everyone disagreed.

Yep, ultimately people had more of an issue with the hoopla made out of it than the pick itself. But, I remember, prefer not to rehash it. :)

Actual NFL history would determine that and as far as I know, no one has ever traded a mess of 2nd round picks to jump into the top ten.   When I say realistic, I mean close to trades that have already happened in real-life.  In my example I said it would be realistic to trade for the first using your current first rounder and other picks available.  I don't have an issue with headscratchers - we all know them when we see them but we shouldn't be looking to be the victim of the next great train robbery either.  We know enough about the game that the only time trades like that happen are when, like Ditka, they're one foot out the NFL door (for the second time no less) as it is and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle before exiting out in the due course of things.

But for as "unrealistic" as Ditka's trade was in real-time, at lease he used collateral that was in the ball park by acceptable standards -  the focal pieces being the #12 pick and a future first rounder.  Sure in hindsight, they could have done the trade with just the #12, 3rd rounder and future first rounder, but extenuating circumstances in Ditka's mind allowed him to bag in the rest  of their picks and another future 3rd - if it doesn't work out, he's done in the NFL anyway, with or without the trade.

So back to being realistic in this draft - even the so-called worst trade of all time involved a current first round pick in the year drafting.  In the proposed trade, three 2nd round picks and one 3rd round pick for the NUMBER SIX OVERALL PICK IN THE DRAFT.  It defies logic in a way that not even Ditka could defy logic.  I know you're playing devil's advocate, and I'm not worked up or anything, but where's @Superman when you need him?  Superhero my *bleep*.  LOL.

That was by JPFolks.  Lol man he caught so much grief for that.  He wanted to play a guessing game with everyone.  Here's his pick and the reaction after is just as harsh as I remember it lol.

It turns out that I went too Ballardistic on @WarGhost21 I was trying to trade with him too and he tried to leverage the Cardinals offer to up the bid war.   We were only on pick 3 at the time and I didn't want to start bidding up before the player even lasted to the 7th pick.  Plus, I thought he was trying to avoid moving down to 15 if he could help it and that I could barely up my offer if at all by making clear that he would only be dropping a handful of spots.  I couldn't be sure he was accurately characterizing the value of the Cardinals trade (not that he was outright lying, but just in the sense that he was phibbing to inflate the value of their value to pit against mine) and I placed too much value on the 3 picks between BUF and ARI..

So I told him I'll stand pat, thinking he was targeting someone at 12 that wouldn't be there at 15 and I lost out.  It was fun though.  This game, above all else, is really an eye opening exercise that shows you how it's just not so easy to trade up or down as some people make it out to be.

To be honest, I wanted to see how far each side would budge. It was a little expirement for both of you, and it was a lot of fun! Thanks for taking part!

Just to get back on track:

@Shive and The 49ers are on the clock :)

With the 9th pick in the NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Roquan Smith, LB Georgia. (surprising right? :))

The 9ers get the best LB in the draft , which they SORELY need. With their current scheme, since it is very similar to the one Atlanta runs, I could see Smith used like the Falcons have used Deion Jones. WILL or MIKE, the 9ers get a defensive playmaker.

Nice pick. This is also a reason the Colts cannot take too many chances by trading down and getting out of the Top 10, IMO. Few quality LBs at the top of the draft and we don't want to miss out on all of them.

I offered him the 4th overall pick. He could of walked away with 2 of the best players in the draft in Rd 1. His focus was on Rd 2 and missed in Rd 1 because he was guessing what another GM was going to do.

You had 2 of the top 4 picks in the draft and you didn't get a QB or the best RB??

I wasn't guessing at all. I just waited till my pick and made it.

You bringing this up just shows your picks were made out of spite because I didn't take your offer.

Sorry, it was very childish of you to even go there.

it's not totally insane... there's a mock draft on NFL.com that has the Browns doing the same thing but instead of Nelson, they grabbed Barkley and Chubb, then got Lamar Jackson at pick 33...

Sorry. I dont think that highly of the QB's in this years draft so why blow a pick on a possible bust? I have a QB that can get me in the playoffs right now. I've made my team better with 2 picks already. And once the RB that I have on my board falls to me then what will you have to say ? I'm not mad you didn't take my offer , im the one that offered it. I was fine either way. You got mad and started whining about it and threw in the towel and wanted to take your ball and go home.

Good pick. I am not sure if he is the best LB taken but we will see.

Edmunds draft grade-7.17 / 6ft-5in / 253 lbs / 34 1/2 reach / 4.54 40 yd dash

Smiths draft grade-6.74 / 6 ft-1 in / 236 lbs / 32 reach / 4.51 40 yd dash

Real close and I think they will both bring some good LB play for both their teams.

Alright Gentlemen. No need to degrade people or their picks. We don't know how any of these players are gonna turn out and a "bad" pick could turn out to be the best player of the draft. We all have different opinions and big boards. And most of all, we are all part of the Colts family.

I think Roquan is more NFL ready and polished while Edmunds ceiling is higher. Given the choice for the Colts I prefer Roquan. Just seems more mature and a stronger leader. Either are solid picks tho

If Dorsey does not take a QB this year it's quite possible he will lose his job. Now that is reality.

Can we all behave like adults? I didn't know Gavin but this is a memorial draft and bickering isn't appropriate.

When all is said and done we can vote and decide on a consensus draft grade for each team; until then can we concentrate on the current picks.

Weren't both Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman around 6'0" - 6'1" and in the 240-245 lb range and both played inside in the 3-4?

I wonder if a comparison can be made to either of them for Roquan Smith. Both Willis and Bowman never came off the field, played all 3 downs and it helped deal with other teams going no huddle, and were decent in pass coverage too.

Oh absolutely but as much as the fan base hated him, I think the reason they traded him was more contract based. And the fact that they were stuck in a rut and needed to shake things up.
