actually imo opinion this team peaked/plateaued en the late manning years & needed a proper rebuilding sans Joseph's departure. Grigson & Pagano only continued the masking, So w/out 18 the franchise has lacked a true general.

It's all been fluff & Paganos just mediocre.

Pats decision only makes me mad bc he made it a point to kick Grigson on his way out, even though to a degree his on & off the field antics paint him similar to that of a man he besmirched.

it adds to the holes needing to be filled but it shouldn't be to hard since he's just a punter.

rebuild?  no one but the kicker is left from those years......  been here since 93'   this IS a rebuild, and has been since 2012

I agree with the above poster, Pats challenge will be getting people to give 2 %s about him now...... most of his audience was colts fans...... even NFL fans of other teams dont know who he is most of the time......  this has to be because of injury, only way it's legit and makes sense for him, bes luck PAt!

probably cus it was midnight.

"He told me he wasn't expecting it," McAfee said. “Then he told me how much he appreciated how much I've done for the Colts. It was such a cool thing because I was most nervous to talk to him. I didn't want him to think I was leaving him because that wasn't the case at all. He told me I have his complete support, that whenever or what I need, I can call him. He asked me a couple of times, 'Do you want another year?' And I told him, this team wouldn't deserve that if I had mixed focus. He said that if I ever want to kick a ball again, it's going to be in a Colts uniform."

It’s always possible that McAfee will reconsider his decision and return to the NFL - and the Colts - one day, but he’s officially retiring from the NFL to pursue a different career, one that seems to be his true passion.

just because players left doesn't mean a proper rebuild took place. A solid foundation hasn't been here for a while and I could argue even while manning was here he wasn't placed en the optimum position to succed but I won't argue that far back.

Grigson and Paganos inexperience led them to believe they could force open a window that wasn't there. En 2012-'15 we should have seaked a steady growth and drafted/signed young talent to build a TEAM ala Oakland.

Yes i believe under Ballard a proper rebuild will finally take place

broken hearted.......it's been a rough week, taking care of ailing family members..... traveling......Pat played the only position I ever could with my condition, I'm partial to him.... he's amazing as a player,.......argh!

not saying they ever rebuilt properly, just that no one is left, therefore, they can't really "rebuild"

hav to acknowledge the need to start anew

Well......

Looks like all of us who study on the draft have to brush up on punters....

If there's one we love,  maybe we use a 6th round pick on Pat's replacement......

Not sure I want to leave this to finding a guy in free agency......

Good luck to Pat in his new life post-football.

seriously, next summer, how many people will care about Pat's stories from Cabo like they did this year?   If he isn't on the team, he's just another guy..... he's not by any means a bad guy, but why would it be any more funny or relevant than your drunk neighbors stories from Cabo at your labor day cookout?

has to be injury related, no one walks away from 6 mil to do stupid ish on comedy central right?  right?  this feels like a huggier Artest situation.....

and again, I hope this was a health/life choice..... because I don't know if Pat realizes how much he was integrated into the local community..... maybe i am wrong...

& he has said he plans on staying in Indy, to pusue that comedy career that you have the utmost belief in him maintaining...

Yeah if you read his letter the one thing he made clear is he's staying in Indy and still wants to be apart of the community.

Bummer... Wish him the best.

Normally you don't think about a punter very often, but Pat made so many great punts in crucial situations... He saved TDs by tackling returners and he was brilliant at onside kicking.

Im not a huge fan of his comedy, but he is hilarious compared to most football players not named O.J... I'll watch it when his stuff starts airing.

Wow... wasn't expecting this one but then again were some of the signs there. Pat had become a bit more outspoken than usual (even by his standards) and seemed to be putting more and more time into media appearances. I do wonder too if the whole All Pro thing this year didn't play a part too.

Regardless of what you think of his personality he was a great player and servant for the Colts, the posts bashing him for this choice are just frankly ridiculous.

It isn't going to be terribly difficult finding a reliable punter.

However, now, the Colts may have to carry 3 kicking specialists on the roster, which really sucks.  That's 1 very valuable roster spot you're burning.

Unless the new punter can handle kickoff duties and smash touchbacks on the regular, the Colts may be forced to carry Adam (it's too much to ask him to handle kickoffs at his age), a punter, and a kickoff specialist.

Best of luck, Pat.

Can you not read? He said it was due to the fact of a third knee surgery in 4 years. I've had just two in 4 myself and I'm not a pro athlete with people hitting me every week. Knee injuries suck regardless. So let's cut the guy some slack.
