Could we also use him coming out of the back field on 3rd downs??

I am guessing YES and the total lack of understanding of field position is amazing. Special Teams are important

Bradshaw has a game suspension to serve. He's of no use to us week 6.

Bradshaw's suspension is served already, just FYI. But I don't see how the two situations are related anyways, so...

Cool but try to do that in the NFL. I won't be excited unless he does a better job than Whalen.

He has returned 3 kicks in the NFL since 2012 and we havent had three in nearly 10 years so that is something that needs to be addressed. I am not saying he is the answer but why cant we find a great returner

We're not allowed, because Josh Cribbs muffed a punt last season and Grigson is just trying to prove that he's smart. Good teams don't bother with return specialists, evidently.

Could he have been signed to play the "Edelman" role in practice to prepare for the Pats? That's the only thing that sort of makes sense to me.

Cmon. You know the rules. Only other white receivers may be compared to other white receivers. The media, announcers in particular, would not know how to handle. :)

i have mixed feelings about him however if he comes out next week and runs one back for 109 im sure all the skeptics will be quiet likewise if he pulls a cribbs on us they say "i told u so" and vice versa for the people who like him. i say try him out 3-4 weeks if he makes a difference keep him if he doesn't stick with whalen.

I was really impressed with Whalen as our return man. He always makes something out of nothing, has great instincts, and makes smart decisions. This is stupid.

You have no clue as to this being stupid. What is wrong with having Whalen and Thigpen on the roster? Is there some kind of rule that the Colts can't have both? I don't have a clue how this is going to turn out but to automatically call it stupid, is stupid.

Bradshaws suspension was already served.

I really don't get all the love for Whalen.  He has muffed his fair share of kicks, a majority of the time his returns are not impressive, and he rarely plays wide receiver.  The biggest thing going for him is he is familiar, yet lots of people on this board constantly complain how the coaching staff sticks with the familiar instead of trying someone who might be better.  I'm all for bringing in someone to try to get a spark in that third phase of the game.

I guess it's bye bye  for Griff,

"We're going to get him going this week," coach Chuck Pagano said. "He was out there (Monday). Obviously we know him; we've seen him; we've played against him. (He's) a good returner, so we'll start to integrate him into our system and our schemes and see where that takes us."

It shouldn't take long, Pagano said, to do that. The return position is not one that is particularly complicated.

There's "right return, left return, middle return," he said. "As long as he can possess the ball and catch it, which we know he can, we know he's got return skills. He's got the numbers to back it, so we've got a lot of respect for him as a player."

In what sense do you mean it's bye bye for Griff? As a returner or cut?

My point is no matter the consensus some will whine and cry just because. Whine when the FO makes a move and whine when they don't make a move. Whine about any move. Sometimes forum is the wrong word for what goes on in here.

I agree that we have our fair share of a "whiny" fan base. However, that doesn't mean we should just lump every concern into a negative blanket and pretend the "whiny" fans are at it again. Sometimes the concerns are valid.

Not using Whalen for punt returns is a valid concern. We keep searching for that return man who can hit the big one. We have tried and we have failed. I see no reason to go away from Whalen, because he is sure handed and he makes good decisions. He will not lose a game for us.

So just because a team tried and failed it means to quit trying? Thigpen is not a fumbler. He is a good return guy so I don't see any negative on giving him a shot. It has zero to do with Whalen. Why settle for average when there is a chance for great? I don't have a crystal ball but neither does anyone else.

Having a return man not fumble the ball is not settling for average. That is settling for solid.

Cribbs was not known as a fumbler either.

I am okay with giving Thigpen a shot on longer fields, but Whalen needs to be back there on shorter fields.

If Thigpen does become the Colts return man it will make no difference if it's a short or long field IMO. Like I said, this is not a negative dig at Whalen. If Thigpen can get Luck and the offense better field position then it's a good signing. If not, it's not that big of a deal with Whalen on the roster. Yes Whalen is solid but there is not much yardage to be gained by fair catching 80% of the kicks.

If he stays he stays, but what else are we going to do with him?  He's obviously being relieved of his kick and  punt return duties so what is he doing to do that requires us to keep him on the active roster?  Twiddle his thumbs? These are my assumptions and I like him but I'm just looking at it from a logical stand point.  That is 6 WRs that we would have on the active roster with all these injuries we have.  I could be wrong but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they released him to make room for Bradshaw if they sign him of course.

He has stuck around all of this time when a lot seem to think he was going to be cut. I have no clue what will happen with him if Thigpen does take over the returns. We keep reading about Bradshaw but we really don't know any more than just talk after his visit with the Colts. We don't even know if he is in shape to play.

I'll leave this here:

Whalen is averaging 8 yards on return this year and 8.5 for his career (PR). He’s returned 38 career punts.

Thigpen is averaging 5.2 yards on return this year and 10 for his career (PR). He’s returned 85 career punts.

that doesn't mean anything.

    • I agree. One of the fans who has criticized AR's game was MIA after the first game, but after this last game, he is very active and criticizing AR. Granted, AR did not have a good game this past Sunday, but every QB has good and bad games. Folks are being overly critical of him.   I don't attribute the first loss to AR; in fact, I think the Colts had a chance to win the Houston game because of AR's play. But those that don't like AR will not give him any credit. Flacco would not have won the Texans game. JMO.
    • Said it weeks back and was slammed, Matt Gay is toast, time to IR him and be done with the games
    • What a bunch of silly silly posters we have. He doesn't have to question himself. He has a host of employees that look at every possibility to improve the team and bring their ideas forward to be considered. Ballard at that point would still have others involved helping choose the best way forward. Bringing players in to work out often being a part of the process.   And yes the players and their agents get to look at what interest they have, who they would be coached by, potential playing time.   That said, I say trade Ballard, Gus and his coaching buddies for draft picks.
    • If there was ever a time to flip the time possession it should be this week. The Bears offense ranks 31st and averages 176 YPG. It would be great to see more snaps and opportunities for the Colts to establish some semblance of rhythm
