FWIW, Eason threw 59 mph at the combine and Mahomes only 55 at his.  4mph is a big difference when its a game of inches.

Mahomes' velocity isn't anything special, pretty mid pack, which might explain why he's not an elite QB when stationary in the pocket but gets out and finds open spaces.

Eason's 59 is right there with Baker Mayfield, who at 59/60, is a bit surprising given his size.

Josh Allen threw 62 which is flat out nuts, but Eason's ball velocity is in the top three of all Combine ball velocities since about 2012 (not top 3 QBs....several have thrown 59 over the years).

He should be able to get Campbell and Hilton the ball down the field better than just about any QB coming out in recent history.

59?  I read Eason had a 62 which is very good but doesn't define a qb.  Eason has the size & arm that if you could create the perfect qb on those traits alone, you would have Eason.  Unfortunately, it usually boils down to between the ears at this level & that is what has me curious. Glad we have a yr or two to see how this develops.

Multiple reports and video of Eason throwing 62mph at the combine.

I also just read rosters are not going to increase to 55. It stays at 53 but you can bring up 2 players from the PS on game day if needed. This way you don’t have to cut anyone. They then go back to the PS the following week. I find it hard to believe we are going to keep 3 QB on the 53. Especially with a FB on the roster this year. Something is going to have to give. Eason won’t last on the PS. If we keep 3 something will have to be cut.

How many made the playoffs?  If you have two QB's, you dont have one!

This is a really bad post. I shouldn't respond.

As of last November, 15 of 32 teams had three QBs on the active roster. The Niners, Chiefs, Saints, Ravens, Patriots and Eagles made the playoffs. That's half of the 12 teams that made the playoffs, and it includes the two SB teams.

There's no correlation.

And by the "logic" in the bolded statement above, you shouldn't even have a backup QB.

Lastly, to go back to the post I first responded to, where you said no team carries three QBs... The fact is lots of teams carry three QBs. About half, as a matter of fact.

He's not going to be on the practice squad. I'm sure they discussed that when they were deciding whether to pick him or not.

Thank You Superman for the lesson of the day as I had no idea that all these successful teams can afford a roster spot to a 3rd qb.  This doesn't make sense that these teams listed can be such a force playing with a 52 man roster but again I'm baffled.  I guess I'm used to all 53 meaning so much which shows our lack of depth and talent.  Excuse me for my ignorance as I'm used to carrying a punter, kicker and kickoff specialist and had no worries about a backup to the backup at the qb position thanks to Manning and Luck.  Hopefully this idea doesn't last long my friend!

Eason committed to Georgia assuming there would be a certain head coach.  When they changed head coaches, he thought about transferring then.  So him transferring after Fromm was made the starter isn't a surprise or anything to do with quitting.  Fromm played well and met more what the new coach wanted.  Eason is more of a gunslinger.

Got it. Didn't mean to be harsh or rude.

Every team only has 46 active players on Sunday, usually two QBs. With the new CBA, there will be 48 active players on Sunday. So you might see some teams actually dress three QBs (although I think that will be rare).

Also, with the new CBA, teams have a little bit more freedom with the practice squad, so it will effectively be like you have a 55 man roster, instead of 53. I think a lot of teams will use that added flexibility to carry a third QB during the season. Instead of 15ish, maybe low 20s. Maybe more.

Ideally, I'd want to have one rock solid starting QB, and one rock solid backup. Peyton Manning and Jim Sorgi; Andrew Luck and Matt Hasselbeck. If we had a true "future of the franchise" QB I assume that's what the Colts would be shooting for.

But given Rivers age and JB's (supposed) lack of a future as our starting QB, I think you'll see the Colts carry three QBs in 2020. It allows for a game day backup who's ready to play (Brissett), and a younger guy who needs some time before he's ready to play (Eason). And that's not as rare as some people think.

No worries and you had every reason to be baffled at my lack of knowledge to this topic.  I expected the bottom 10 teams to carry 3 qb's, not the cream of the crop.

Fast forward to the 2020 NFL draft and Eason is a 4th rd pick while Fromm went in the 5th!  Can't help but wonder the outcome if Eason never lost his starting position?  Nobody knows but I can guarantee he wouldn't have fell to the 5th rd like Fromm!

If the Colts roster can get away with carrying 3 qb's, I am all for it as you mentioned of having a rock solid backup!!  There is no way that Eason can contribute in 2020 or at least be successful so having a backup that is more than capable (as long as TY is healthy) will be refreshing.  I just hope the roster can handle this.

IMO UGA would have won the NC had they kept Fields. And would have been better had they stuck with Eason over Fromm.

Yeah I am not a Fromm fan at all. Just a gut feeling and eye test stuff. I think he will flop as a pro.

Good kid, good leader, but just way to conservative of a QB/passing game. I know they liked to roll as a heavy running back offense, but it truly hurt their chances at breaking out. Opposing Ds rarely gave much thought to deep routes.

Agree and "better" just might have been good enough!!!

UGA had everything going for them except a passing O. Great run and pass D. Great running game. Similar to LSU before changing their O.

If Rivers plays well and we make the playoffs, we can always re-sign Rivers to another 1 year deal and draft another QB next season if our management feels that Eason isn't the answer. JB's contract is up after this season so he will be gone IMO. Kelly is a mystery at this point, maybe a wildcard? He is just on the practice squad as usual.

Very interested to see UGA play this year. Their roster is loaded and following the LSU model made two important changes:

1. Bringing in grad QB transfer and NFL prospect Jamie Newman from Wake Forest

2. Todd Monken new OC - More importantly they are completely revamping their offense. The previous OC James Coley was a great recruiter but horrible OC at UGA (& Miami previously). Monken had a lot of success as the head coach at So Miss and as the 2018 OC with TB Bucs.

Trying to keep up with the Jones.....

Monken is an interesting pick. Definitely and upgrade though IMO.

Agree, that's why I started with FWIW.  The 59 is the official combine number.  Its certainly possible that he or any other qb threw harder on a pro-day or some other venue.

Just reporting what Ourlads has listed for every QB who threw at the combine since 2008.  I didn't clock him myself. Maybe the official number posted by Ourlads is the average of several throws and the 62 is the cherry-picked media hyped fastest throw?  IDK.  Or maybe Ourlads simply got it wrong.

This is a great video. He says he had sources in side the UW program telling him that they were worried about Easons work ethic. Who knows who these sources were. But like he says here Eason has a chance to change the narrative. I suspect with the way ballard talked about him that that some of this might be true. I don’t think Ballard would of been as harsh if they weren’t. Eason needs to have  that playbook learned by the time they are able to start practice. That will go a long way if he has that down by then.

Was wondering the same thing. Ourlads is normally a reliable source but some of those numbers don’t match what I have seen/read reported on some of the other players as well.

He has very good physical tools. When you stop and think about he really has not played a lot of college ball. I think he is in the right system with Reich and Rivers to help school him. He also has the benefit of a good offensive line and  talent at wide receiver and running back.  This team will be more of a ball control offense vs. what we had with Peyton and Luck. I think this was a good pick. HE has a lot of upside and could emerge as a top flight QB. at worse he is a 4th round pick who may be an average QB. I think the upside far outweighs the downside particularly when he falls to us in 4th round.

I don't consider that much because in a couple years it could change.
