REPORT: Colts expected to hire McDaniels as HC, per NFL.com

Recommended Posts

Does McDaniels affect anyone's thinking on what we might do on draft day?

There's obviously been whispers of Barkley - McDaniels' offenses haven't been built on the prototypical elite back play...:dunno:

Wouldn't be surprised if the Colts fed Kravitz/Holder the "deal not completely done" stuff. It can't look like a deal is already official, which I doubt it is, but yeah.

Deal can't be official until after the SB and McDaniels signs. It's as official as it gets.

Wonder if BB just retires at the end of this season, with his staff getting gutted by 2 ccoordinators filling spots by promoting Pats position coaches....

Flores the LB coach is rumored to be a candidate too - this season.

maybe it's just the colts that can't say anything?

They can't make anything official, and neither side can announce anything until the Pats season ends.

I think it's a promotion not lateral move

If it's not HC, it can be blocked. Eagles QB coach DeFilipo was blocked from taking an OC spot with another team.

Don't let csmopar see this...

It's a promotion, but the team can block anything that's not a head coaching job. In this case, Eberflus' contract expires after the SB, so the Cowboys can't block him from leaving.

Lol. Right. Csmopar will set you straight on the hiring procedures. :D

Yup. That's why I think the Colts want that out there, that it's not official.

But yeah, it's as official as it gets at this point.

Apparently Eberflus is very highly regarded, Dallas fans were often claiming he was their main priority this offseason.

Yep, many Cowboys fans wanted him to be DC but Jones kept Marinelli.

Would McDaniels really take Barkley? The offense runs well with Lewis and White, neither of which are on the level of Barkley. If we were to select a RB in the third round, the offense could run well too.

Barkley would be like Kamara but better.  Kamara can do everything.

I swear.... I'm about to have to fight you...lol

He will, but I think he'll still call the plays. A young up and commer would be ideal for that position. You want someone that's moldable and can grow into the role while McDaniels runs the show.

I'm hoping we get some experienced position coaches though. You really need veteran coaching experience somewhere in that building.

As awesome as it would to get someone like Defilippo, he would just leave in a season or two. I assume McDaniels wants someone that will stick around and grow together.

Do we know anything yet on if he wants roster control or player selection preferences??

Not sure how that affects Ballard's job duties.

I'm leaning towards Chubb. McDaniels has made the offense work with Lewis and White and previously with Blount and other RBs. Colts have Mack. If they pick up one more, McDaniels offense could still work around them.

true, but Eberflus' contract ends after the Superbowl, and he is free to take any job he wants then.

Good thing is that the coaches are young. Peetz is 34 and McDaniels is 41. There's nothing about Eberflus so I have no idea how old he is.

I don't think Barkley necessarily, but I do think McDaniels will want mis-match weapons. I posted in the other thread about the possibility of signing Dion Lewis as a FA and possibly going after a big athletic tight end.like Dallas Goedert in the draft. I think both make sense ...

I believe it's standard coach and GM relationship. Ballard will probably draft according to his scheme, and McDaniels will consult with Ballard on other stuff.

Judging from where he’s come from and the mistakes he made in Denver, I’d expect him to build from the trenches and defense.  OLine. DLine. And Linebackers. McDaniels schemes guys open. I could see us passing on Barkley & trading back unless his hands are receiver like...  Somebody posted a video of a tight end that looked VERY athletic. From a small school. I hope we can snag him even in the 2nd if we have too.  He looked very Gronk like...

this is about as official as it can be at this time.  I'd be shocked if something happens and he doesn't sign after this report.  As one article mentioned, if a report like this comes out and then McD backs out, that's basically career suicide.

Agreed - on one hand I love the idea of Luck getting a true top-level talent to work with, but with your sensible hat on, you have to think that Mack ticks a reasonable amount of boxes in terms of what JM looks for in at least one of his backs. The boxes he doesn't tick could be ticked on day 2.

That’s it Stitches. Great post. We do have a good history with tight ends named Dallas...  And Goedert looks LEGIT.

Just hope he does not try to be BB 2.0

He tried that with Denver and failed. I believe he's learned from his failure.

I really keep going back and fourth on if I want the Colts to take Barkley or Chubb.  I think Barkley is probably the better player but guys like Chubb are hard to find and the Colts can still probably get a very good runningback in the second round.

    • I don't think they would be the laughing stock of the league at 8-8. 2 years ago they were -16.  3 years ago they were 1-15. They are extremely stacked and have a QB who seems like the real deal.   They could win 10-14 games this season.   The Hunt signing was genius.
    • I also think it is time for the Lions fans to back off.   But to be fair, in his time in Detroit, he took several jabs at fans that called him out for his horrible play on the field.
    • Great stuff as usual, @stitches. Ballard is building a team as I like it, through the draft and without overly spending in free agency. I've never been a fan of spending on free agents outside the organization.    Anyhow, other teams' fans want their favorite teams to emulate what the Colts have done. The Jets SB Nation site has a good piece on how Ballard has built the Colts. One area the writer mentions is the value that Ballard has placed on second round picks. I thought it was a good read.    https://www.ganggreennation.com/2019/5/21/18631702/the-colts-provide-the-jets-with-a-great-model-to-turn-things-around
    • Well, it is not just about running more, it's about running effectively.  If the Colts have to get 2-3 yards in order to get a first down and they are able to do that by running the football.  Then they will have the opponent on their heels and the offense as a whole will be more effective.     I agree that you take what the defense gives you, but I would bet that if the Colts were able to consistently have runs of 6+ yards, the defense would try to stack the box, even against Luck.
