Charlie Casserly About Colts Head Coach Vacancy

He said on the CBS Pre-game show that Colts wanted to talk to Bengals OC Jay Gruden about the head coach vacancy but he declined the interview. Also the Colts wanted to talk to Giants DC Perry Fewell but he is in the NFC championship so they couldn't talk to him yet.

I think Jay Gruden said he would be staying with the Bengals. I read somewhere on this forum that he said something like "The Bengals gave me my first chance at coaching in the NFL and I want to pay them back"

I saw that as well, and I think he also mentioned he wanted more time in his current position to get more experience....

Ya, another team (I think it may have been Bucs or Dolphins, can't remember) wanted to talk to him and he said he wanted to stay with Bengals.

Fine with me, I don't really want him as the HC.

I really hope the Colts choose Zimmer... Come on Irsay! :)

Zimmer HC and Fewell for DC? I really hope we don't see Childress or Tressel.

I think Zimmer or Fewell would either one be ok, but i really doubt that Fewell would leave the Giants unless it was for a promotion...so he wouldnt come here as DC...personally, if we hired either of the two, i would think they could call the defense as the head coach.

One thing i dont get, though, is why SO MANY people act like Tressel would be so horrible...the man won 85% of his games as a head coach, i dont see how that can be so easily discredited?

I do agree though that hiring Childress would be very frustrating and very questionable

Well, Tressel isnt either one of those guys. He may not end up as a good NFL head coach, but to dismiss him before he's even had a shot at it, is just foolish. Everyone has a first day on any job they take, and some become the best at whatever the profession may be.

Everyone brings up Pete Carrol and Nick Saban, but they fail to realize that Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Tom Coughlin, Don Shula, Bill Walsh etc all started out as NCAA football coaches before they became NFL football coaches.

Surely you meant 'no NFL head coaching experience'.

Most of the attractive candidates have no head coaching experience at any level.

Who are you hoping for?

Sorry, forgot to quote.

So what! Zimmer has tons of assistant experience. Do you want scandal man Tressel with zippo pro experience of any kind?

The only scandal involved was that Tressel lied to the NCAA to try to protect some kids who sold somethings that belonged to them. I think that is kind of like lying to the gestapo to protect your neighbor.

One thing about Casserly is he only talks about things he knows about and he also makes sure he keeps his sources happy by not saying too much. I have a lot of respect for him. When many reports come out from various places, I usually don't give it much credit and that is not the case with Casserly.

As far as Jay Gruden turning down the offer, there are several reasons why a person who has never been a head coach in the NFL before might do that. Maybe he doesn't think he is ready to be a head coach yet or maybe he just didn't feel like he was prepared to handle this enormous situation we have at hand.

Neither has Tressel as an NFL coach and I still don't want him. I hope we do land Zimmer or someone then an ex college head coach. Who knows maybe Irsay has an Dark horse that no one is talking about. But I really don't like college coaches as NFL coaches. Same way as college basketball coaches going onto the NBA. Its very rare to have an college coach do well in the pro level. Jim Harbaugh is an rare. To bad Caldwell did got get canned last year. I would love to have Jim Harbaugh as the Colts HC this year and years to come. But since he is already as the San Fran coach and I don't see him leaving. I rather go with a coach that has NFL experience.

    • Both Flacco and Ehlinger are free agents.  Uncertain about the long list of upcoming QB FAs that we could target next season.  Remember AR is still very raw only played one full season much like Caleb Williams in college with very similar snap count and production.  I do see the Colts looking for potentially two backup replacements but also someone very early in Round 2 as a backup (with strong upside as a starter a must).  Jalen Milroe (Alabama) is my top front-runner and may see his draft stock rise to early Round 1, but right now if he is available to us in Round 2 then he becomes our next Flacco/Minshew.  Either Grayson McCall or KJ Jefferson could be potential draft replacements for Ehlinger.    Right now, can see us next year go Edge again in Round 1.  Both Ebukam and Lewis will be in their 30's and contracts up at the end of 2025.
    • I don't know. There's some potential late games. Lions, Steelers, Bills, Dolphins, Packers. Texans for sure
    • Agree, feels very late this year.    The NFL teams are preparing schedule release videos as we speak right now!
    • Simmons is someone the NFL and every referee unit continues to have their eye on during every play. The moment he does a big hit (he usually doesn't care about how and where he hits), the league is gonna serve him a 4 game ban. He would spend most of the year suspended, unless he plays by rules which he doesn't seem to want.    Do you think Ballard gets that type of player, with year long availability in question? There's a reason he's available in FA, not because he's waiting, but because only the teams that are okay with his style of play and its consequences will get him before the start of the season. Not sure Colts is that team.
