Colts @ Panthers Monday Night Football Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Hello, Colts fans! :) Our 3-4 and amazing AFC South Division leading Indianapolis Colts make their second international Monday Night Football appearance in the 2015 NFL regular season, as they are in Charlotte, North Carolina, to play the NFC South Division leading, 6-0, and undefeated Carolina Panthers. Colts are coming from their disappointing home loss to the New Orleans Saints at LOS back on October 25. Colts are also playing their second game in consecutive weeks tonight with an NFC South divisional opponent.

Colts Andrew Luck might start with his fractured ribs, but backup Matt Hasselback may step up in place of Luck, as Matt already earned two wins this season as a Colts starting QB.

Indianapolis is making their first regular season road visit and appearance at Carolina for the first time in more than eight years, and also first Monday Night appearance between the teams. Entering tonight, Colts overall Monday Night Football record is 22-15, including their 20-7 MNF loss back on September 21, while the Panthers record is 7-5. Carolina's last MNF appearance was a 45-21 road loss to Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, back on November 10, 2014.

In Carolina's 20 years of the Panther's existence as a charter member of the NFL, tonight's game is only the sixth meeting between the teams. Carolina also amazingly leads Indianapolis so far in the all-time series 4 games to 1, despite the Colts leading the Panthers in total points in the five previous regular season meetings 99 points to 97.

The Colts and Panthers regular season rivalry began in Carolina's inaugural season in the NFL back in 1995, when the expansion Panthers upset the Colts 13-10 at Clemson's University's Memorial Stadium back on December 3, 1995.

Colts only win in this series over the Panthers so far was a 31-7 victory, as Indianapolis entered the game undefeated at 7-0 at the time, and played at the Bank Of America Stadium back on October 28, 2007.

Carolina's only game scoring occurred when DeShawn Foster ran a 3-yard TD run, followed a John Kasay PAT. Colts scored the rest of the game points when Adam Vinitieri kicked a 20-yard FG, then Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes, both in the third quarter, 4-yards to Joseph Addai, and a 59-yard pass play to Reggie Wayne. Addai also scored on two TD runs, from 2 yards in the second quarter, and 12 yards in the fourth quarter, to secure the Colts 31-7 victory.  Manning completed 14 of his 30 passes for 255 yards and 2 TD's, Addai had 23 carries for 100 yards, and Wayne had 7 receptions for 168 yards, with a long of 59 yards.

Panthers unfortunately defeated our Colts 27-19 in their last regular season meeting played at LOS back on November 27, 2011. Carolina entered the game that day with a 3-8 record, but the Colts were still winless at 0-11, because Peyton Manning had to sit out the entire season with his neck injury (Colts finished that year 2-14). Colts scoring included a 17-yard TD run by Donald Brown, 2 Adam Vinetieri field goals from 43 and 31 yards, and his PAT, and a Curtis Painter 56-yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne, before a missed two-point conversion. Colts QB Curtis Painter completed 15 of his 29 passes for 226 yards. Panthers QB Cam Newton also 20 of his 227 passes for 208 yards.

Mike Tirico, former Buccaneers and Raiders Head Coach Jon Gruden, are announcing the live TV game commentary, along with sideline/field reporter and interviewer Lisa Salters, simulcast locally over-the-air in Indianapolis, on WRTV 'We Are Television,' The Indy Channel ABC Channel 6, throughout the USA and internationally on ESPN's Monday Night Football, all media live on HD.

Bob Lamey, our 'Voice Of The Colts,' and former Colts backup QB Jim Sorgi (who also completed 1 of his 2 passes for 9 yards in the Colts lone regular season win at the Panthers) are also announcing the live radio game play-by-play and analysis, along with field/sideline reporter and interviewer Matt Taylor, simulcast on Colts flagship stations WFNI ESPN SportsRadio 1070AM, and WLHK Country 97.1FM, and the Colts/Vectren Radio Network.

Kevin Harlan and former NFL QB Kurt Warner, are also announcing the live radio commentary, along with sideline reporter Jim Miller, syndicated internationally on Westwood One Sports, incuding locally on WIBC-FM 93.1FM in Indianapolis, and WGCL News Talk 1370AM in Bloomington.

Heavy rains with cloudy skies at 59 degrees, is the local game forecast, inside the Bank Of America Stadium in Downtown Charlotte, for tonight's 8:30PM Eastern Standard Time kickoff, along with 75% precipitation, 100% humidity, and mild northeastern winds at 6 miles per hour.

Visiting Colts players are wearing their traditional white helmets, jerseys, and pants, while the host Panthersn are wearing their black jerseys, and silver helmets and pants.

Both the Colts and the Panthers players, and their coaching and team support staffs on both sidelines, along with the rest of the NFL teams league wide, may voluntarily wear authentic camouflage designed NFL apparel both on the playing field, and in the sidelines to honor our US military personnel, both at the playing field during game action, and in their sidelines, to both recognize the NFL's 'Salute To Service' Campaign, and Military Appreciation Month throughout November.

NO injuries to both the Colts and Panthers, leave Charlotte with not only a win, but maintain your AFC South division lead and even your record at 4-4, and .500. Go Big Blue, Stay Colts Strong tonight, and GO COLTS!!!!! :coltslogo::1colts: :coltsfb::coltshelmet::helmet::blueshoe::coltslogo::D

We've got an undefeated opponent with a pretty good defense and a QB playing some great football.  This will be a good test to see where our team is.  Come out with tons of energy, boys!

You know why we lost last week? Cause I didn't do my predictions and voted for the Colts to lose. Duh

Colts: Gore has 5 yards a carry.............and only 10 carries

Colts: Luck doesn't get sacked more then two times. The reason for this is cause he has to throw the ball way to quickly. Which leads to his 3 Ints

Colts: Moncrief does more stuff! A TD and 100 yards

Panthers: Jonathan Stewart goes off. 200 yards two tds

Panthers: Kuechly gets a sack and a pick

Panthers: A TD on Defense and Special Teams

Panthers win 38-13

COME ON REVERSE JINX IM COUNTING ON YOU

Ray Lewis is an *. "Andrew isn't a pocket passer" lol wut. He's struggled this year but its not because he's not a pocket passer. At least Luck isn't a murderer...

Interesting comments by Young & Dilfer about Luck.

Also about what Pep said to Suzy.

LOL, I like Ray but Andrew is a pocket passer, a pocket passer than can run. I really don't want to bring this up but do you think Ray is actually murderer? I think he was there and seen it go down which is still bad because he then tried to cover it up, just my take.

One might argue that this game really will serve as a measure as to just where this team is really at (along with next week's game against the Broncos).

Fingers crossed.

The colts just got called for holding and the game hasn't even started yet.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry....

Gore will probably rip off a 40 Yard run to start the game but a holding will be called.

Probably.

Everyone on the panel had good analysis, then Ray opened his mouth.

Is he blind?

What was said?

Sorry, I probably should have included that.

Basically, Steve and Trent said that the Colts are asking Luck to do too much and that the game plan has been different for Luck versus what it was for Hasselback.  They also went into what has been said on this board, that the organization has not given Luck enough additional talent around him.  Also, they referenced that Pagano said to Luck that he does not have to put on the Superman cape a do it all by himself, but Young said that the Colts organization tied that cape on Luck.

Suzy said that she asked why couldn't the Colts use the same game plan that they used when MH was at Qb.  Pep reportedly said that Matt has learned that game plan over many years.  Steve and Trent basically said that what Pep said makes no sense.

Edit.  They also thought that Luck should go into Grigson's office or Irsay's office and demand more, they felt that Luck was being too complaint and should, essentially, stick up for himself more.

Normally you see Luck laughing and smiling pregame. Tonight he looks focused and a little angry. I like it. This team should be ticked off after last week and the week before.

Pep really said that? Wow. He sounds clueless.

For the life of me I don't see why Matt isn't starting...he proved he can get it done when called on.

If Luck feels like he can play that's great. He can suit up, but he needs to rest unless absolutely needed.

Okay, that *ic statement from Pep pretty much settles it for me. The problem is more Pep than Luck. I don't think it's even close now. Fire him before kickoff, please.

If we can just play mistake free football, we have a chance to win this game. Limit the penalties Colts!

The Panthers get a total of 4 turnovers from our offense

4 turnovers is not unlikely--I think at least one happens on special teams

    • It sounds like Collins was trying to surround himself with better support prior to joining Indy, but yes, it's great that we've got enough high-character guys on this team who can help keep him clean.  https://www.colts.com/news/jalen-collins-grateful-for-the-opportunity-with-colts   I tend to agree with you regarding who Ballard considers 'bad apples.'  Kelly was dismissed from Clemson because he snapped at coaches after being benched as a sophomore in a Spring Game (and then got in a 'minor fender-bender' in the team's parking lot, which did not lead to any police report -- sounds like he was heated when he left and probably drove a little recklessly).  Prior to joining Clemson, Kelly did send a few tweets or social media messages suggesting he was going to come in and win the starting position right away.  He was ~17-19 years old when these incidents occurred.  Sure, they're not great, but I imagine being a very highly-touted prospect and the nephew of a HOF QB comes with quite a bit of stress, especially at that age.  Not that those were great incidents, but it doesn't necessarily make him a bad person (kind of like you eluded to, these incidents are nowhere near as serious as domestic violence or endangering a child, etc.).    When he was 21, Kelly got in a scuffle with some bouncers at a nightclub in his home town.  Again, not a great incident, but keep in mind he was 21 and was probably going through some hard times as he was being scrutinized nationally for recently being kicked off Clemson and probably had a bit too much to drink with some of his hometown friends.  Not that getting in a scuffle in a nightclub is a good thing, but there are a LOT of 21 year olds who get in scuffles when they've had too much to drink and no big deal is made of it because they're 'normal' kids, not highly touted football players with a celebrity uncle.  Of course,  being a 'star' comes with responsibility and you'd like to think kids know enough to keep themselves under the radar, but I don't think it's an incident which makes him an evil person.   Then, when he was 23-24 he left a Halloween party at Von Miller's house and stumbled into the wrong house.  He didn't steal anything from the house or attempt to injure anyone in the house, from all accounts I've read... he simply had too much to drink and went in and sat on a couch, got chased out by the husband in the house and then went and slept in his SUV.  Again, not a great incident, but I don't think it's something which makes him a terrible person.  Sounds like the kid needs to understand his limits in terms of partying a bit better, but if he wasn't an NFL football player, that charge would be a pretty common thing to read in a police blotter in a large city like that.  He needs to understand, he's going to get more scrutiny as an NFL athlete and due to his past and his ties to Jim Kelly... and it sounds as though he's gotten some counseling and is doing his best to stay away from situations like that in the future.     Ballard and his staff always seem to do their due diligence before bringing players into this team.  The fact that Reich and J. Kelly were teammates for just under a decade probably also helped Chad Kelly in this situation.  I imagine Reich has known Chad for a long time (probably since he was a toddler) and had some conversations with Jim to get assurance that Chad is trying to clean up his act.  While not all of his actions were the greatest, he doesn't seem to have done anything that would be a huge deal and make him a terrible human being if he was just an average Joe.   Jalen Collins' suspensions it sounds like were 2x for smoking weed and 2x for PEDs.  Not great decisions, but again, those aren't things that make him a terrible person.  And as @Scott Pennock said, it's easy, if he slips up again, we release him and move on (well, if he slips up for PEDs again, we won't have to deal with him, the NFL will suspend him for 2 years and by that time, he'll probably be too old to come back and compete for an NFL roster spot).  To be honest, I am more concerned with the PED use than the weed from a young man in the NFL... but I don't know all the circumstances (e.g., did he just not do his research and took a supplement on the banned list by accident (this seems to happen a lot, and in other sports you are starting to see guys winning cases by proving they accidentally took a tainted substance)? was he battling a nagging injury and took something to try to help recover faster (this also happens, e.g., Andy Pettite admitted he took PEDs several times in his career, but moreso for recovery than to enhance his performance, like being put on the 10 day -DL instead of the 60 day-DL)?  Or did he actually knowingly try to cheat by taking substances to give him a major advantage over other players (all these guys take supplements, but there are supplements which are more advantageous than others)?).  I would be more worried if this guy is actually a major cheater who felt he didn't have enough raw ability to play in this league to the point he had to take banned substances... but he already is well aware, if he screws up again, his NFL days are over.   In terms of Okerere, Ballard and others have already said numerous times that they did their due diligence about his alleged incident and talked to his coaches and others around him and found no reason not to bring the guy to Indy.     If allegations turn out to be true, I doubt Ballard would bring in a guy like Tyreek Hill.  Maybe it's just my opinion, but assaulting your spouse or your child are way more serious issues about someone's character than smoking weed, pulling a McAfee and falling into a canal, or having too much to drink and accidentally stumbling into the wrong place (especially without attacking anyone or vandalizing the place).  I, for one, am happy Ballard isn't against giving guys who have not done anything very seriously wrong another chance.  Like Ballard says "Kids make mistakes."
    • Addai was great in pass pro, but as an overall RB give me MJD anyday.    Mack is a little low, but overall hes still in the 15-20 range IMO. If healthy he definitely moves up though.
    • I loved the "with the next pick" series. Watched it multiple times. I'll look at the site again and see if it changes my opinion. Maybe the video series on Cain will spark my interest.
    • it was just an ugly ugly ugly game.   to me, our O was the issue. you can't punt your first four possessions and then miss a FG to end the half. then you punt your first two possessions of the 2nd, fumble on your 3rd, and punt again on your 4th. When special teams is your only score for 3Qs, it's your offense lol....   our D actually held them under their average so i can't blame them too much. we actually had more sacks and QB hits they them.   Biggest issues 1. they doubled a hobbled TY, and the rest of our WR group were mediocre to begin with 2. O play calling sucked. horrible game plan from Reich, and good one from Andy. 3. our LB's played bad...  4. we abandoned the run too early (only 14 rushes the entire game). Our YPC was pretty good. 5. weather/field
    • They had the better team and were at home. KC winning doesn't surprise me at all. This upcoming season is a different story. If you ask 99% of Houston fans were they surprised we beat them in the playoffs, they would probably say yes. I wasn't, because we had the better QB. Mahomes and Luck are pretty even regarding KC and they were at home.
