Per Adam Schefter Colts and Duron Carter closing in on deal (Merge)

Thinking Hakeem Nicks being a 4th WR and 6th Option in the Colts offense, while putting up 400 yards w/ 4 TD's is reasonable. Asking him to put up around 700-1000 yards and 8-9 TD's is unreasonable in that same role. It doesn't take a genius to figure that type of stuff out. Being upset, calling him a failure is unnesscesary! Sorry if I offended people for their lack of judgement.

What I will point out on the Nicks subject is, he was brought in to rehab his career and he wanted to showcase and make money. Imo, he expected to be better than what he gave us because that would mean a big paycheck somewhere. He didn't separate well, he dropped more balled than I would have thought when his big mitts were supposed to be a huge asset, he underperformed. Some point out how much do you expect from a 4-6 option? He probably got about what I would expect from a 4th option guy. However, when we signed him, I am certain he nor the team was aiming for a 4-6th option kinda guy. That kinda depth guy doesn't make the money he got on a one year deal, they get a min kinda contract. It's no doubt this team expected to get at minimum a 3rd depth chart production from him if not closer to a second kinda depth player.

The problem has two parts imo. 1. Nicks did not get separation and wasn't targeted because of it. 2. The team did not devise plays to play to his strengths which is jump balls and fades. If Nicks wanted to become the man and make more money, he needed to step up his game and establish something, he didn't and should expect to be back with the same salary figure he had this season.

I like the potential with Carter. Will he do anything? Maybe not but he is a cheap option for a #3 guy who has some potential to move up the chain and if he fails to do anything like we hope, we draft a replacement the following season. By this time, we will know what we have in Moncrief and will most likely have already locked up TY. WR is not my biggest concern on the team moving forward. The oline getting either a solid running game or a shield of solid pass protection so Andrew has the time to survey his targets, all of them.

Ah my buddy Jason S...

first Paul Kruger is not an elite DE.   Just have to watch Cleveland to understand (which I do, lived there for 8 years).    He had 5 sacks against Oak and ATL...

Newsome and Werner for Indy combined for 11?    Just saying.    Cleveland's D was on the field a LOT.     And behind.   Cleveland's O was last in the NFL in 3rd down comp %.    Lots of chances for Krugs....   Just saying..

And as far as your "ridiculous" take on the TE position...    OK..    I guess Indy cannot find an often injured TE, and anther TE that drops nearly a pass a game.     But wth...    they make the "splash" plays once in a while don't they.       sigh...

If Indy pays Allen and Fleener more than 4 to 5,m per each they are really making a HUGE mistake.    But I don't think it will happen.     TE is a LUXURY position.         This team has CORE NEEDS.     and they are painfully obvious.

In fact I would offfer Fleener a one year 3m dollar deal.    And anything I give Allen is incentive based.    Believe it or not they are replaceable.

The thing I don't like about this "signing?" is the fact that a kid with a dad that is very well off may not grow up as fast as most would under the same circumstances.    I don't know C Carter and I don't know the kid...   BUT........    He has been around the block more than most people will in their entire careers.     He, for whatever reason, never seems to stick?   Why?  No urgency, no pressure, daddy will always take care of you?    I hope that is not the situation.      Hopefully CC has dropped the hammer and said well young one...    an education is not your goal...       NFL?   OK...  .   EARN it.

Low risk, High reward potential...     we shall see...  but I for one...    expect NOTHING out of this dude.

That's a fair expectation, all things told. I'm pretty much right there with you.

To speak on his entitlement, feeling like his parents would take care of him, his dad said they basically cut him off the past two years. He lived off of his CFL salary -- around $50K/year -- and was able to buy a house for himself. That might be a flat-out lie, but it's what Cris Carter said.

Right...    these guys got paid  ...  (overpaid)  by LOSING organizations that simply look at numbers and then spend.   Baltimore will keep the ones that matter.     REALLY MATTER.   And Paul K was not one.

Baltimore WAS LOADED on D that last year Kruger and Ell were there.    The sum is always greater than any one individual part.

J Harbaugh really is a great coach..     I have a lot of respect for that guy.

John, I don't think they are busts, but I will say none of these guys seem to do as well in other places as they do in the Ravens system. I like your pickups of Jones and Redding, but all these guys seem to do better in Baltimore. My theory is we've been very fortunate to have deep drafts and a lot of depth on defense. This allows the Ravens to use these guys in their best capacities like run stuffing, or third down pass specialists . They are rotated like an outfield platoon to play to their strengths. Sometimes, when they go to other teams, they end up a full time outside linebacker instead of maybe a 3rd down pass specialist. Thus, it seems like they didn't do as well, but some of those areas weren't their specialty. You have to have the depth to do this, but the bad thing is for the Ravens, a lot of these guys get big bucks after four years, and you can't keep them.

I still like Art Jones. He is not as good as Ngata, but he's a nice player, and was injured this year. Krueger is simply a pass rusher, and used correctly, is what every team needs. Ellerbe saved the Super Bowl for the Ravens in 2012 with that tackle. I think Miami's defense improved with him in there. Is he Ray Lewis, no, but he's a quality linebacker.

Ahhh   OK..  there you go..

Spoiled kid, that has ability, is forced to "make it happen on his own"..    Well good for CC to finally step up and deliver some tough love.     I hope it works out.    Indy really needs another WR BAD.

You should try to make your point without the exaggerations, but just to clarify, Fleener dropped six passes this season. That's not even one every other game.

Also, I don't know why people always make this about needs vs. lesser needs. TE isn't a luxury, it's an important position. Doesn't mean the TEs we have are irreplaceable; they aren't, but you also don't just toss them off the boat because they dare to ask for a multi-year contract. More importantly, if you choose to keep them, there's nothing in the rules that says you can't address your more critical needs also. It's not one or the other, and when people pretend that it is, it makes me wonder how seriously they've considered the situation.

Last thing, any contract either player receives won't be a long term weight to the team. I'm not sure how you would quantify something as a "huge mistake," but I don't think we'll be doing anything with either Fleener or Allen that will be a huge mistake.

Alright so once again I have to say this.  The CFL is not college and not arena football, the guys who play in the CFL from the US are generally just undersized but not lacking in talent ( you know all that measurable crap that means nothing well that lands many in the CFL) oh and they make less than the majority of the people on this board, you have to love to play if you play in the CFL.  I am not judging but 99% of the people on this board no nothing about the CFL.  Now thats out of the way.

The kid has some issues but has not had any character problems in the CFL and playing in Montreal it would have come out.

He might not be a saviour but we really need receiver help contrary to what many think ( along with many other things ).  We dont have a number 1( T.Y as good as he is, is not a 1 sorry people ) and Carter will probably not be it.  Hopefully this is a cheap contract that turns into a something good for us.

Wrong..  Indy does have a top notch WR...    Indy does not have a LEGIT number 2 WR that can make a team pay when teams like NE take TY out of the game.

And this includes the TE's...       Moncrief may or may not be the answer but he was wasted on the bench for far too long this season to know.

WR is a NEED along with OL and DL.

Would be nice for DC to hit but ....  odds are...    he will be camp fodder.

Not sure of that I like Allen a lot honestly an all round good TE. Allen has played 3 years, missing when when he got hurt. Can't stay in the game  AHHHHH I will admit Colby will drop a few but he makes a few good ones too. His size is a tough match up for almost every team. I think are TE's have to block sometimes to much because of our poor OL play at tackle especially on the RT position. You mention Doyle he played more of a H-type back, or fullback than at TE. Also unlike Allen or Fleener his after the catch ability is pedestrian at best. He can block though and seems to have good hands. Allen stayed healthy this year that's good, and for me Flenner I wish was tougher sometimes he plays a little soft, but gets better every year! I would love to see a an offensive alignment of 4 wides with our big TE's as 2 of them that would be the mismatch. Who do you cover them with CB, too small, Safety, small & and slower, LB slower and not as agile! Both are great red zone targets which is a premium!

Saying Fleener drops a pass a game is an exaggeration. The bolded is plain sensationalism. And specific to Fleener's drops, he hardly dropped the ball at all in 2013. Two drops all year.

I guess I'm fine picking one or the other, but we need to do a lot of work at WR and RB. And technically speaking, neither of the two TEs have a lot of leverage to demand a great sum of money. I think we can keep both, and that would be best.

He went from having one of the best drop rates among TEs (or any player, really) in 2013, to one of the worst in 2014. And it was literally a matter of 4 plays.

No one is ever going to accuse Fleener of having the best hands in the league. He's not snagging balls out of the air and dominating tight coverage. The drop against Washington was stupid. But this acting like he can't catch is just ridiculous.

And, by the way, Dwayne Allen had a worse drop rate than Fleener in 2014.

If you're saying it was literally a matter of four plays,  are you saying there were 4 drops all year?    Or four MORE drops in '14 then '13?

The other terrible Coby drop was early in the year,   the J'Ville game down in Florida.    An out  pattern in the back corner of the EZ and Coby was wide open and Luck hit him in stride.     A catch and it's a TD.      Yet Coby turned as if he was planning on running after the catch and took his eyes off the ball and dropped it.      It was pretty shocking to me.

But otherwise,  the Big Two, I didn't see anything terrible or shocking....

Yes he is declaring Listed 6"1 210 I believe ,very strong , projected 3rd round would be a steal . Id take him in second if hes still there.

As a fan of IU I would love to see this team pick up Coleman in the draft... and signing Carter will certainly help this team focus on the more important things in the draft like defense and o-line.

However, he's not a dud either.

Because you don't hold a rookie out of the CFL to the same standard as you hold a five year veteran who was drafted in the first round. But even then, if Carter gets the number of snaps and targets that Nicks got this year (and there's no guarantee that he will), I would still be a little underwhelmed by 38 catches, 400 yards.

I know some people are making it seem like Carter is going to be some immediate difference maker, but if you think that's unrealistic, then we agree. A typical CFL free agent is a back of the roster kind of guy who you really shouldn't expect anything out of.

Meh. I expected more. I understand why people would be disappointed in his production. It was meager.

I'm just saying I won't be the one disappointed if he doesn't turn out to be anything special.  Like you said you cant hold a CFL star to the same standards anyway.  Jerrell Freeman type talent is about all you can expect.  That's pretty much the ceiling for those types of players IMO.  Not taking anything away from him, because I think he is our best LB, but I don't see Carter making Pro-Bowls or anything.  I think if he put up the numbers Nicks did, I would be happy with it.  I'm way more concerned about fixing the OL and finding a coulple LB's that will help improve our team all around.  If we had a 1000-1300 yd rusher that would be great!  Take some of the load off the WR's and Luck.  We need to become a more rounded team and not worry about our 3rd WR having decent numbers.

Fact is, it's his own fault for being in that role, he has the potential to be the #1 receiver, it's not the fans fault he fell to #4. He even started the season as the #2 receiver.

He was never the #2.  He was #3 for awhile but without chemistry with Luck, and a Moncrief showing, he quickly dropped to #4.  I agree it was mostly his fault, but I do put some blame on Andrew, because when players struggle, if it's not his go2 guys he totally forgets about them, until they go out of their way and standout.  Ive seen him favor TY and Fleener so much, just to pick up there confidence.  Both of them dropped 2 passes consecutively and Luck would throw it to them again, just a couple plays later.  If Trent wasn't running well or Nicks had a drop, they could be wide open but Luck doesn't even look to that side of the field, because he doesn't consider them an option.  It was that type of crap that held Nicks back.  Not having chemistry and also not being on top of his game early on in the season.

Remember, Nicks was not the #6 option all year.    If that was the case, his numbers are very good for that role.   He struggled early and moved down the depth chart.   Then moved up due to injuries.

I think (assuming Wayne retires) that Nicks and Carter could make the team.   I think I would choose Carter over Nicks right now.    It's a tough choice though.

I would definitely say TY being #1 and TBH it's a toss up between Nicks (if he is back, but that is ?), and Moncrief.  Unless Nicks gets in a little faster I can see Moncrief beating him out.  Then the #3 spot would be between Nicks and Carter.  I really don't see Carter coming in and stealing the show.  He is a CFL transfer, who needs to learn the system, and style of play in the NFL.  He will have a learning curve to catch up for the first quarter of the season.  I would say Nicks would be #3 and Carter just behind him.

All of this is assuming Reggie will retire.  Not sure he will, because part of me says he'll be back for 1 more year, which likely Nicks would be walking and it would be Reggie in the #3 spot on the depth chart.  Not to say Colts are traditional with how they line up WR's in according to the depth chart, but talent wise, how I see them listed on the roster.

Great analysis!!  Nicks could've worked much harder to get his speed back but didn't.  Never really thought of it that way, but you are correct with the play calling to get him included.  I think he kind of lost motivation early on because of chemistry issues.  He did drop a few, but I would say Luck had many more targets to him that were uncatchable, even with his big hands.  I think he could be a good asset to the team, but Colts have a way of being very indecisive about decisions.  I didn't agree with signing Nicks in the first place, especially bringing in Moncrief to top it off.  Too much talent did hurt them in this instance, because the money should've been spent elsewhere.

Colts had the OL issue that should've been addressed.  I think of Luck as a QB that makes WR's better.  He would've been fine with Whalen and Rogers in that role IF we would've focused on beefing up the OL and not the plug n play crap.   We would've had a good run game, and the WR's would've had as high expectations.  Bottom line you want a overall balanced team not stacking talent in a position or two. Things will settle down, after Nicks or Wayne is out of the picture, because player's will "know they're role" better.  Sorry to say, but Reggie IS NOT a #2 or #3 WR anymore, and we pressed him to be.  That was another huge mistake later in the season.

I look for things to change in the offseason, because everybody and their grandmothers know our weaknesses.  I don't see us going another year with poor blocking on the interior, and not giving Luck time.  I think we will have a good pass game (as normal) with a complimentary run game.  Balance is the key.  NE dared us to run, but we can't because we are always playing from behind.  Penalties and Turnovers absolutely killed us this season.  If all of that gets cleaned up, I don't see how were not playing in the SB.  I truly think 4-5 big acquisitions while swapping some some players that are underwhelming and eating cap could springboard this team into a potential dynasty.

Drop Landry's contract and put that same amount of money into a player who earns that money

Cut Thomas and have Thornton as great depth, but bring in a good Guard who WILL block at a satisfactory level.

Drop Cherilus and his contract for someone who WILL block at a satisfactory level.  Or a Center (highly unlikely) because of the

-stupid Holmes and Harrison competition.  I think Holmes will be okay next year though.

Draft a replacement for Mathis this draft and have Mathis show him the ropes next season, so when he retires he can take over.

-plus he would get alot of reps this season, because of aging Robert.  Newsome and 1 other good rusher would help ALOT.

Bring in a great coverage LB who can cover big TE's and stop the run (don't see that happening though), because of the signing of

        - DQ last offseason and Jerrell will probably get resigned.  So it's definitely put up or shut up time for Werner & Walden!!

Drop -  per a typical Colts/Luck Homer. All passes that touch any part of the intended receivers hand.

Andrew keeps throwing his high, late, off target passes and he will Again, in his 4th consecutive season, be near the top of the league in "DROPS".

Good grief how many open receivers did Andrew miss against NE because he had his head _________, because he WAS going to throw it to His Guy no matter? It was sickening. And expected.

I have to believe you know thar is not how drops are counted, but you just feel like being argumentative.

Also, did you drop a hit of LSD during the New England game, because apparently you hallucinated seeing open Colts receivers.

My thing with Coby is this....

He drops BUNNIES.. .   way too often.    I mean ...  WAY TOO OFTEN.

He is not a guy I am going to invest in..     to "count on" ...

JMO...      But ....   tape does not lie...          He scares the hell out of me.
