I wouldn't say they're slippery.  They're made of some decently grippy material, plus the players wear gloves with grip.  I think the problem is the shape of it.  You can't predict where it's going to go when it bounces, so all you can really hope for is to throw your hands towards it and hope you catch it.

 

And Patty Mac puts them in their own 10!  That dude's a beast!
