@HolderStephen: Writing a story about progress of #Colts draft class. Told you about Moncrief. But also learned that Newsome taking some DE snaps in nickel

By golly :cheer: I think Manusky is finally getting it!!!!!!!!! He's trying people at multiple positions, hopefully planning things for Robert Mathis' suspension

I think that's a misleading comment by Holder.....

I seriously doubt a 250 pound Newsome is playing DE.      He's playing OLB who is rushing the QB in nickel situations.

He can call it DE all he wants,  but it's much more a rush linebacker than anything else.

A 250 pound player would barely make sense in a 4-3,  it would make zero sense in a 3-4.

How big do you think Mathis is? Mathis plays/played DE in 4 man fronts. Mathis MIGHT be 240'ish at the most.

I know,   there are exceptions to every rule...   And Mathis is exceptional!

But, generally speaking playing at sub-250 in a 4-3 is not done very often.

Most 4-3's prefer their DE's to be 260 or greater....

I think that was his point?  :dunno: Matthis/Freeney were not the norm for the position.

Which made us great with the lead when we could unleash them on the QB.....but also made us susceptible to the run and created problems for us when we were coming from behind

Why does this surprise anyone???? In passing situations, the rush linebacker often lines up at DE. Where's the news???

In a 3-4, the Nickel package is sometimes a 2-4-5

2 Defensive Linemen

4 Linebackers

5 Defensive Backs

Stephen Holder could've seen Jonathan in on plays where he was part of the 2 defensive linemen group & Erik Walden & Bejoern Werner were the OLB

He didn't go into detail much but he did say he was gonna write an article on it so I'll see if I can find that & get more clarity

Found the article. It's indystar & I remember you saying they banned you haha so here's some quotes

Quote from Mathis on Jonathan

"He's a natural pass rusher," Robert Mathis said. "You can't say that about a lot of guys, but he's one of them."

Where it says Jonathan is playing DE

"Newsome said he's playing mostly strong-side linebacker but also is adding some defensive end to his repertoire in passing situations. His versatility is giving the Colts something to think about, especially with Mathis suspended for the season's first four games."

2 of those "LB's" are down lineman to which they are no longer LB's.

True, but also depends who's system

2-4-5 the 49ers run, Aldon & Ahmad are still standing up

Some 3-4 systems the 2 OLB's do put their hands in the dirt. It's a lot of ways to do it. That's what makes the 3-4 so good & exciting to watch when ran properly. So many looks you can give

what is manusky "finally getting"? he's playing an edge rusher on the edge. that's not even football 101....that's football pre-k.

Yeah...what is Newsome going to play....Nose Tackle?  All they got him for was to rush the edge...like Mathis in 2003.

If its a Nickel package im pretty sure he's still considered a OLB just has his hands in the dirt, correct me if im wrong.

Either way they can disguise it as 4-3....or stay with the 3-4 hybrid..  It can actually change with a simple LB call at the line of scrimmage.

I am hoping we disguise a lot in Mathis' absence....gotta bring the heat.

    • But if the Colts sign someone next week or the week after then it really doesn’t matter.    I would’ve preferred we sign some two weeks ago.   Get them familiar with the DC and position coach.   But once we didn’t then it really doesn’t matter when.  It just matters that we do it before camp opens.  At least to me.    And the fact no one else is signing these top FA safeties tells me the market just isn’t there yet.   I’m preaching a healthy dose of patients.
    • How about getting a proven commodity in the FA market? I know that assumes the player wants to be here, but money talks and the Colts have some. This D needs a solid center fielder. Simmons fits that role perfectly. If he’s gettable, here’s to Ballard pulling the trigger, even if it’s a slight overpay. The team CANNOT leave this crucial position to players who have consistently underperformed in the past (Cross and Thomas).
    • All - this is the real question.   What do the 32 GMs in the league know that the rest of us (we're on the outside looking in) don't know?   Answer that question and you'll have what you need to analyze the choices made by the leadership of your favorite team.
    • We have the weak secondary where a player in FA can be signed for a year and get a starting job. We also have the money to afford any of them. Not too many other teams have that combination of both factors right now. Also, the draft recently happened and I'm guessing a lot of these teams want to try out their early round picks in the secondary right now. We didn't draft anyone in the secondary until the 5th round. We are somewhat desperate (not to mention Daniel Scott is out for the year again). Other teams are not at the moment.
    • Why do you think A and B are the only options?    What’s the reason for Ballard to be cheap?   What incentive would there be?    Posters like Superman and w87r have crunched the numbers.  The Colts are among the league leaders in spending.     Ballard’s is going into his 8th year.  He’s been competitive in 6 of the 8 seasons and I personally think season 1 was a tank.    Also…. Ballard always says the team is always looking to improve.  It’s now mid-June, so the Colts have 5 more weeks to sign someone before camp starts.  There are a number of FA safeties available.  Why aren’t the other 31 teams signing these players either.  They’re certainly good enough.  But it’s Ballard who is wrong or incompetent or cheap or something and not anyone else.
