I like most of yours except I took Fleener for most improved and HIlton for Breakout player and I gave the best game award to the game against the 49'ers.

By best game award I interpreted that to mean the best overall team performance.  And in that view we played a heck of a game in all 3 phases against the 49'ers.  They are a top team and we beat them pretty significantly.

Best Game Award: Colts vs 49ers

Biggest Surprise Player: DHB (you didn't say "best" Surprise... who would have thought this would go so poorly?)

Breakout Player of the Year: S. Brown.  I mean he killed it on special teams this year.

I split one award into two, and then gave it to three guys.

Team MVP: Andrew Luck

It is what it is. Luck is the oil that makes the engine run.

Offensive Player of the Year: TY Hilton

Kid put up 800 yards and 7 TD's as a rookie, and then follows it up with 1K yards and 5 scores. He's a top WR in the making.

Defensive Player of the Year: Robert Mathis

As much as I love Robert, he only gets this award because Vontae Davis lost it down the stretch. For the first half of the season, Davis was better than any corner in the NFL. (Annnnd cue the dick sherman rant) He was less reliable later in the season, however, and Mathis' importance to our defense showed through.

Outstanding Leadership Award: Andrew Luck

Everything this guy does is immaculate. When the weight all falls down on his shoulders, he picks it up, and carries it like it's nothing, leading the way for the rest of the team.

Best Game Award: Colts v. Chiefs (Wild Card)

I never want to experience anything like it ever as again as long as I live. But I'll also never forget it as long as I live.

Most Improved Player: Coby Fleener

he had a good showing in the second half of this season. I was quite possibly the biggest supporter of drafting Fleener. But even my enthusiasm had tempered on him. And then he seemed to just relax and make plays. And now I see him blossoming into exactly what I saw in my mind for him before we drafted him.

Best Acquisition (Draftee/FA): Erik Walden

I questioned this signing big time. And I'm not giving him this award because he made the biggest impact, but because he played his role well. The headbutt thing angered me to no end (I was very embarrassed to see my team in the national media like that) but Walden came in and did well enough that I don't feel like we overspent on a mediocre LB any longer.

Biggest Bad Surprise Player: RJF

For all the hype surrounding this guy when he came in, I didn't see much we couldn't live without.

Biggest Surprise Good Player: Griff Whalen/Da'Rick Rogers

He spent his rookie year on the practice squad, and being bounced to and from the active roster before becoming a significant contributor late in the season. He proved he belongs, and deserves a chance.

Breakout Player of the Year: Donald Brown.

He was just another RB at the start of the season continually getting shuffled down our depth chart to the third spot. It looked, for all intents and purposes, this would be a lame-duck year for him, and now he's parlayed the chances he got this season into a starting job. Somewhere else, it seems, but it still took quite a showing by him to get himself into this position.

Costliest Injury: Reggie Wayne

We had to learn to re-function as an offense without Reggie out there. And we never were quite able to command the attention of a defense in one specific area after the loss of Reggie.

Team MVP:  Robert Mathis.  You can make a very good case for Luck but Mathis did it with even less help on defense than Luck had on offense but honestly if you say Luck here I couldn't argue.
Offensive Player of the Year:  Andrew Luck
Defensive Player of the Year:  Robert Mathis but if we are giving it to someone other than the guy I gave MVP too I would say Freeman
Outstanding Leadership Award:  Andrew Luck
Best Game Award:  TY Hilton's playoff game vs. KC
Most Improved Player:  Coby Fleener
Best Acquisition (Draftee/FA):  GC
Biggest Surprise Player:  Donald Brown, looked the team had given up on him and he turned into our best running back on the roster
Breakout Player of the Year:  TY Hilton
Costliest Injury:  Reggie Wayne

I'm going to add one award to the list.

MVP: Andrew Luck - Without him this team is not much.  One of the smartest QBs in the game.

OPOY: Andrew Luck - Did a great job cutting INTs in half

DPOY: Robert Mathis - 19.5 Sacks & 8 FF, and he's 32 years old

Co-Outstanding Leadership Award: Robert Mathis and Cory Redding

Best Game Award: Colts vs Denver - Manning vs Luck, enough said

Most Improved Player: Vinatieri - I thought we was getting too old to get it done, for example his 50-yarders, but had a career year

Best Acquisition: Gosder Cherilus - didn't allow many sacks and did good in pass protection

Biggest Surprise: Donald Brown - 5.3 yards per carry is pretty good for a supposed 1st round bust

Breakout Player of the Year: Coby Fleener - Doubled his stats from last year and had 2nd best drop rate

Costliest Injury: Bradshaw and Ballard, we finally got our WR corps in order after awhile

Team Player of the Year: Darrius Heyward-Bey - I know we all can't stand his drops, but he accepted that fact and took a role as a gunner, special teamer, and blocker.  Didn't complain at all.

Biggest Bad Surprise Player: RJF

For all the hype surrounding this guy when he came in, I didn't see much

You can't be serious! Not only did RJF have a good season and do exactly what he was brought here to do(no he may not be a pro-bowler but he's a good player) but you make a catagory for biggest bad player surprise, then pick a good player and let the biggest, most horrific, worst player on the team this season off the hook. Everybody should be able to admit that if we were going to give the distinguished award of sucktitude to anybody, hands down it would go to...Trent Richardson!

I was thinking DHB but I guess you could say Trent Richardson was bad too

I give him a pass until I see him next season with a full off-season under his belt. DHB had a entire off-season here & between the 2 I'd say Richardson had the bigger impact on the team. Having Richardson changed the way defenses played us imo

Team MVP: Andrew Luck

Offensive Player of the Year: T Y Hilton

Defensive Player of the Year: Jerrell Freeman..No disrespect to Mathis, but Freeman was a beast on D, stopping the run, defending passes, and nailing everything that came his way. He is ANOTHER Colt that got no respect for the past 2 years playing  LB

Outstanding Leadership Award: Cory Redding

Best Game Award: Colts 27 SF 7 in San Fran.

Most Improved Player: Sergio Brown..should have been Pro Bowl ST player

Best Acquisition (Draftee/FA):Gosder Cherilous

Biggest Surprise Player:Griff Whalen

Breakout Player of the Year: T Y Hilton..he came of age when Reggie went down, and really stepped up his game, and became Luck's go to guy.

Costliest Injury: Obvious choice is Wayne, But I'm going to go with Bradshaw. He was just starting to get into the groove, when he suffered that neck injury. With Ballard out before the season, and him going down, we were almost forced to get another quality back, and lose a first round pick to get TR, who didn't produce anything resembling a trade for a first rounder. We'll see if he improves with a full year in the system, but Bradshaw and Brown for a full year would have made a great tandem backfield.

I guess I see MVP as being the person who had the best personal season and whilst Andrew was good this season Mathis had the best individual season, IMHO.

Not a Luck denier, just a different perspective on the meaning of MVP.

Team MVP: Andrew Luck

Andrew just dug us out of holes so many times, and he was one of the key parts of success to us winning the way we were. The resiliency showed when we were down by several scores, like in the KC Wild Card game, is amazing. It's scary, because he's only 24 and he could damn well keep doing this again for years down. It shows how much value he has as our franchise QB for the next 15-20 years. We can't afford to have him hurt, at all.

Offensive Player of the Year: T.Y. Hilton

T.Y. stepped up big time in the absence of Reggie Wayne due to his injury. Although he did struggle to open up space for himself as he was being covered as our #1 WR at the time, the last few weeks of the season he exploded, and provided a comfortable target for Luck down the field. Not only does he have good hands, he's elusive. This is our future star when Reggie finally hangs up the pads and cleats.

Defensive Player of the Year: Robert Mathis

I don't think this is disputed here, Robert was probably the brightest star on our defense and made game-changing plays with his strip-sacks. I think his stats this year speak for itself on why he was our best defensive player this year, and I hope he continues to play like this until he decides to hang it up.

Outstanding Leadership Award: Reggie Wayne

Reggie was with the team and the receivers on and off the field even through rehabbing his injury, and taught them so much about being better receivers since he is the most experienced man on this team. He was our honorary WR coach, and I think we've found a career path down the road for him when he retires. I don't think we would've made it as far as we did with our young WR's if it wasn't for his guidance.

Best Game Award: Wild Card game vs. KC

There are so many good games I can choose from but this one obviously stuck out the most. I never gave up hope in this team even when they were down 31-10 at halftime. I sat there in my jersey, silent, hoping we could pull this out... and 28 points later, the greatest comeback I've ever witnessed as a football fan happened. It was such a moment for me as a Colts fan too, our first playoff game win without Peyton Manning, and even though we lost badly to New England, we will improve, and there is something big in our future with how explosive the team played this game.

Most Improved Player: Donald Brown

I was actually winging for Griff Whalen for this one but this year was the only year I saw of Griff and he did make plays, but Donald Brown's play this year convinced me otherwise. Sure, he didn't put up the best stats, but as a pass-catching back and a speedy back, he consistently made plays that kept us from losing the game, and after all the bad years in Indy he had, he proved that he can be a playmaker and I think the offensive scheme now actually fits him better than it does Trent Richardson.

Best Acquisition (Draftee/FA): Gosder Cherilus

The reason I picked Cherilus was because he was one of the bright spots on our offensive line this year. He played very well at his spot, and albeit being inconsistent, actually protected Andrew Luck well. If he becomes more consistent, then we'll have a very, very good offensive lineman in the coming years.

Biggest Surprise Player: Griff Whalen

I think I underestimated Griff heavily this year. He proved to me how much of a playmaker he is in games and he showed that he can be very elusive, the white boy has some moves, man! Lol, but seriously, he's a very good #3 or #4 WR, I'd like to see him stay in Indy for a while as a solid option for Luck to go to for big plays, because I know he can make them.

Breakout Player of the Year: T.Y. Hilton

T.Y. exploded this year for us and showed why he can be a #1 receiver of our future when Wayne is gone. Just see my reasoning for Offensive Player of the Year as the reasoning for this one too.

Costliest Injury: Reggie Wayne

Every injury was costly for us this year as we lost key offensive and defensive players that we needed, but obviously, Reggie Wayne is the worst loss that we could've had this year. Not only was he Andrew Luck's security blanket, he was the best overall receiver on our team when we transitioned into the new Colts generation. It hurt the offensive productivity so much during his absence, and with how much this team overcame the adversity of losing Wayne is phenomenal, especially making the playoffs as far as we did.

    • Again, I’m not saying a good D isn’t needed…well, maybe I am….  But what I’m really saying is that with a great Offensive you can win with an average Defense.   And, as to your point, I think all the teams that lost in those games you mentioned all had very good defenses.
    • Personally I think Thomas got pressed into playing before his time. He did a few things we didn't expect initially considering his draft position. I think ideally they wanted to take their time and train him up sorta like EJ Speed then get him out there.  I'm interested to see how he regroups to be honest.
    • How bout this? Draft better and u build a play off caliber team. Ain't rocket science.
    • Look im not gonna say Ballard haven't had his own issues, but the guy has been put in an impossible position particularly every year.   2017 - He has a lame duck for a head coach when we all knew was gonna get fired and was drafting for his scheme so I'll give him a pass.   2018 - Arguably his best draft getting two All-pros and a stalwart at RT. He gets to sign his choice of a head coach and is left at the alter at the 11th hour which in hindsight was a blessing in disguise. Drafted Tyquan Lewis, Hines, and Franklin who all have or had great years here. Andrew Luck was back and playing like an MVP.   2019 - Horrible draft. No excuses. It was his worst draft as a GM, but he did find a gem in Speed. Luck retiring a week before the season starts would put any GM in a tough spot so once again I'll give him a pass.   2020 - His second best draft getting Pittman, Taylor, and Blackmon. Signed Rivers and traded for Buckner and won 11 games. Unfortunately lost to the Bills in the playoffs.   2021 - I honestly can't tell for certain what happened in terms of QB. Ive heard Rivers was supposed to re-sign, but choice to retire. I've heard he was pushed to retirement as the colts wanted to go in a different direction which was apparently Stafford before the Rams came in last second. I heard Reich pushed hard for Wentz saying he can fix him against the wishes of Ballard. If you ask me, I think Stafford was plan A as Stafford himself said him and his wife were so convinced he was going to Indy that they started looking at homes. When that fell through, imo Reich lobbied for Wentz. Whatever it was, Wentz was the guy and the QB carousal was supposedly stopped at least we thought. A god-like season for Taylor was not enough to save Wentz from ultimately being traded and you can chalk that one on whomever Reich or Ballard depending on what story you want to believe. In terms of the draft, Paye and Dayo have been reliable players on the dline, Granson you can make an argument is our best TE, and Fries came into his own last year.   2022 - Just an overall disaster of a season. Went the bandage route again at QB trading for Matt Ryan and you can say the colts did him no favors in terms of oline protection and JT getting hurt, but that was a failed trade for a miserable season. 2022 draft is still under elevation, but Pierce and Woods did show potential as rookies and Raimann looks to be the LT of the future.   2023 - Ballard finally gets to draft a QB to tether him to and Richardson plays a grand total of 12 quarters. It just seems like Ballard can not catch a break when it comes to QBs, but from I've seen from Richardson, I have very high expectations.
    • Hi Colts fans,   Yeah, I know, I know.  I was just as surprised as you were.  No clue why my good friend Jim Irsay would call me up and offer me the head coaching job.  I had to remind him.  Dude, I said, you do know that I've never coached at all at the NFL level.  Not coordinator.  Not even position coach.  Nothing.  It didn't seem to matter.  It was as if all that was required was for me to be good friends with the owner, and -- bazinga! -- I could be a head coach.   It was awkward, you know.  That first coaches meeting.  There was Gus Bradley.  And there was John Fox.  Both of them had been head coaches.  Heck, both of them had coached in a Super Bowl!  Yet here I was, promoted to be their boss, having never coached before.  Ever.   But, you know, Bud Grant did it.  So, why not?  Remember, I have a way of doing things.   Ok, sorry, I couldn't help but giggle.  I have a way of doing... what, exactly?  Things?  Things like coaching?  I have a way of coaching?  And how did I develop that way?  By actually, you know, coaching?   Anyway, I'm glad you have a new head coach.  One who has actually coached before.  And his experience doing that is bearing fruit.  I'm just glad I'm already in the Ring of Honor.  Because after what happened, I doubt that I would ever be accepted in by the fans, regardless of how I was as a player.  Heck, they would have put Andrew Luck in before they would even consider me.   In the meantime, I'm back at ESPN, attempting to "un-burn" bridges.  It can happen.  I heard Bud Grant did that once....   Regards, Jeff Saturday
